New grads at Children's?

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hi I was just wondering if anyone was going to start working at Children's soon? Or if anyone works there now, how do you like it?

I start in Feb. :D

Justine,

Thanks so much for the info! I just talked to the recruiter and she rattled off benefits and salary like a telemarketer haha, I could barely get anything written down! But it sounds pretty good and it's always good to hear things from people in the program so I appreciate the info, I will be making my decision soon!

Thanks again!

Hi All,

I am thinking of attending the open house on Feb 3 - I currently live in NYC but the job situation is really bad. Does anyone know if they interview during the open house at all?

Any other advice welcome - thks

HI!

I am attending the Open House on Feb 3. Has anyone been to one before? What should I expect?

The only thing they told me was to apply for the position before I come so that they have my information on hand. I am interested in the PICU because I had my Peds clinical there on the Heart and Kidney unit and got to spend a day in the PICU and loved it! I hope Tuesday goes well!

Thanks for any advice!

I'e accepted the New Grad position in the NICU!

I am so excited!

ekells, how long did it take them to get back to you after you applied? I applied a week ago today, I'm wondering if I should follow up or not.

jbeau,

I think it depends on where you applied to. When I applied to the NICU back in December I was contacted the next day to set up an interview, however for other areas of the hospital I was told to wait until January to apply so I'm not sure what the waiting time is on those areas, I would also assume that they have more applications right now than when I did because I applied to early so it is probably taking longer to process them, giving them a call just to show that you are interested though probably wouldn't hurt though it would probably be better to contact the nurse manager of the floor you applied to rather than HR

Good Luck!

I applied around Christmas and got called back the first week of January. However, the unit I applied to doesn't even know how many people they are budgetarily allowed to hire until the end of Feb., so it could be that other units don't even want to call people until they have a firm number of spots first. Every unit is different.

Hi Ekells36,

I've recently decided to move to DC from NYC because of the lack of jobs for new nurses here. You mentioned you graduate in May? When do you start working? Do you need to take the NCLEX before you start? I graduate in August. When do you recommend to apply? I was also hoping for some resume advice. I have a lot of previous experience with children, but not health care related. What did you include on the resume? I appreciate any help I can get, as I'm sure you did before applying!

I don't agree that there is a surplus of jobs here in DC. Not by a long shot. I don't know the situation in NYC so it could plausibly be better, but I wouldnt say the job situation here is good at all. It seems like for every opening right now there are 50 people applying.

^^ that's fairly common in most specialized nursing jobs, in my limited experience...

For myself, our internship had 10 people with about 60 applications, last year when the economy was still good.

In NYC, most of the hospitals are on a hiring freeze and those that are hiring are not hiring new grads. Is this the scenario in DC as well?

Any tips on being the 1/50?
