hi there. i am going to be graduating in may and am begining to put together my resume. i was told not to put down my clinical rotations as experience by an instructor, however, that is the only experience i have except for the nursing assistant position that i have been working at since oct. of 2008. i have alot of other job experiences in various fields but none of it relates to nursing other than the customer service aspects. does anyone have any advice on what i should do? put down clinical experience from school? put down those jobs that aren't related to nursing? HELP!! i am trying to get an paid internship position as an RN in a state different from where i live and with no "connections" so my resume is all i have to try and snag an interview...thanks

I am graduating in May as well and just finished my resume. I actually put down my clinical experience because I was told that it looks more professional and it also tells the employers that you have clinical experience in a variety of areas. The career center at my school has this wonderful tool on resumes on their website http://www.bethelcollege.edu/services/career/pdfs/resumes.pdf. I used their nurse examples on pages 30-33 to help me construct my own. Check it out. This has alot of great info. Good luck

When I was in NS we were told to only put UNUSUAL clinical experiences....like if you had an externship or worked summers in a particular field. ALL nursing students have clinicals, after all. You could mention various clinicals in your cover letter if they pertained to the area for which you're applying, though.

I used my previous jobs that didn't relate to nursing. I think they want your work history whether it be in nursing or not. I didn't put clinicals.....I think potential employers are well aware of the clinicals in NS. Previous job positions can relate to nursing, such as customer service. Good luck.

I did include clinicals, but wrote only very short descriptions of each, except for my senior synthesis (as others have explained, yeah, anyone looking to hire a new grad is going to be pretty well aware of the clinicals you've done). Just don't try to make them sound like actual job experiences, that won't go over well with recruiters/managers.
The CNA experience should give you a boost, and yeah, I would definitely include any jobs you've worked where you think you gained useful skills -- time management, problem solving, delegating, customer service, etc. I included the time I worked as a customer service rep in a department store, as well as the fact that I was a stage manager and president of a student club in college. Unrelated to nursing, obviously, but those positions were where I learned a lot about leadership and managing time and people.

I put down my practicum rotation because it was 72 hours in the same unit with the same nurse. You dont need to write down ALL your clinicals because most of that is just a learning situation and managers know what they teach in nursing school. SInce not everyone has the same practicum and you can have referrals from that experience I would write it down. I have seen job ads expressing interset in applicants who did a practicum in that field as it expresses interest.

Our practicum is 160 hours (in the same unit, with the same nurse as well), and I'm definitely going to include that time on my resume.

I listed all my clinical rotations and the employers that have called me back for interviews have said they liked that, but I also listed work experience. Clinical rotations were listed in a section especially for them.
