Hi, I graduated last year in California..I know nursing homes hire new grads all the time..
You should look in the nursing home before you accept the job..I know some are way understaffed and it would not be a good idea to go into a job like that..

1. Nursing homes
2. Skilled nursing facilities (rehab, subacute)
3. Prisons (the California Dept. of Corrections is always hiring LVNs)
4. Outpatient clinics (beware, because the pay is low)

Home health care under the right circumstances. My manager once told me that he would hire my daughter straight out of school. A few people on this site have indicated that they were hired with no or little experience. Same with me. The trick to this: you must receive a thorough orientation to the case you are expected to work on. They should find a stable patient and a preceptor who is a good teacher and willing to take you under her/his wing. You will be scared to death of course. But, with each passing successful shift, you will gain in confidence. It takes a dedicated home health agency to invest this much effort in a new grad, but believe it or not, some of them do. If I knew that you were in my area and things were in place I would not hesitate to orient you to a case myself. It is all a matter of getting in there and learning the ropes. Don't let any agency push you away by telling you that you must have two years acute care experience. That is not always so. A big advantage to hh is that you can learn as much as you can about the care for one patient and won't be overwhelmed by all the responsibilities of being a new floor nurse. Good luck to youl.

I know my sister works with LVNs at SF General in the ER. Also, I frequently see ads for LVNs at the VA Hospitals throughout the Bay Area.

I saw a number of LVN positions at SF General's website yesterday. Take a look....
There are jobs here...think back to your clinicals. They might be hiring too.

I am starting my new job as a LVN next week
I will admit, the application process was a bit worrisome as I had applied for many positions and did not get many responses. (I have had my license now for about three weeks, so I should not complain too much.) I did finally get a response and a job offer last week. I will be working in an outpatient clinic. The pay is quite good and I did not find it to be low compared to other facilities. Not sure if it pays more than other OP clinics or if this is the norm for the area.
My classmates that have passed their exams are finding work easy enough in skilled nursing and long term care facilities.

Scallywags, congratulations on your new job! I filled out 3 applications and got two interviews at an LTC. My first interview was at an LTC and I was offered $19/hr by the owner of the facility and $20/hr offered by the DON. Although I really liked the DON, I wasn't particularly impressed by the owner due to her lack of professionalism. Needless to say, I accepted a job at another LTC/Rehab facility, full-time position w/ benefits after 90 days and they're paying me $21/hr working the pm shift. In any case, I started orientation today.
Congratulations Emy! It is good to follow your instincts. I hope your new job is great and your orientation goes well.

I received by LVN license about three weeks ago, and have no prior healthcare experience, but plenty of real world experience (I'm 45.) I have two on-call job offers, but am still looking for something FT. There seem to be plenty out there, but it definitely takes diligence to get applications out and follow up. I had a DON tell me today that she has interviewed 42 new grads this week, and it's only Wednesday. Good luck to all the new grads out there, the work is there, you just have to find it.
