New grad know it all

Was this intended to be aimed at someone?? or a new grad you worked with a "know it all"? You NEVER stop learning! You will learn something from each and every patient you work with. Your knowledge grows the more experience you have but it never stops.

Clearly it was mentor a new grad that knows it all... Just a educated guess.... Ijs...

Yeah it happens. There are some New grads and old grads that think they are "know it alls"

Oops, sorry for double reply. Got a new computer the other day and clearly i have no idea what im doing.

I agree w/ the op. A lot of the new grads on my unit are total know it alls! It drives me nuts....but us GOOD nurses realize that nursing is an art, not a job. It takes years of experience to become one

As a new grad I was surprised at how different real life was from school. In school everything had to be perfect and you have all this idealism and Florence Nightengale do-gooder stuff in your head.

Then you get in there and realize it's a messy complicated business and it's kind of a shock. You are glad it's not like school but on the other hand, you're afraid of not doing it like school. I don't know if that makes any sense...

Plus, things do change. My preceptor was very open minded and she was always asking me, "Do they still do such and such?" For example, when you pour a liquid med, reading the cup holding it at eye level in your hand or setting it on the cart and stooping down. Silly example, but things do change and some more experienced nurses often do things differently than the new recruits.

It would be nice if all nurses, old and new realized that we all have much to learn from each other. But there I go idealizing again...:)

im a new grad and i look forward to all the feed back i get from more experienced nurses. anything and everything helps. unfortuneatelyl, i have to learn through some experienced nurses riding on me and not reminding me in a gentle manner, but lesson learned for next time. honestly, nurisng is always changing, no one nurse will ever know everything, that even goes for the most experienced nurses... there are some new stuff new grads can educate u on. i just think that nurses need to be open minded and supportive of each other

I have to wonder if this is a generation X / Y difference.

And just as much, sometimes more experienced nurses need to be reminded that there are ways of correcting behavior/providing feedback that are more appropriate than others.

Absolutely but it is a bit easier to take from a nurse who has years of first hand experience, imo.

Jenni811, it was a conversation I over heard this morning and later discussed with the preceptor so really my post was kind of a vent and also hopefully a gentle reminder that new grads are there to learn and keeping an open mind might be valuable for both learning and developing a good relationship with your peers.
