New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

really? Well I emailed them last week and they told me to just send my application and they don't require any fee.

"APPLICATION FOR ASSESSMENT OF NURSING QUALIFICATION GAINED OUTSIDE OF AUSTRALIA" this is the form I am referring to.. are we talking about the same thing?

and this is their response to my email

Jeanette

There is no cost for the assessment at this stage (this may change in the

future)

I just dont know if they are going to ask for any payment after they receive my application.

I think i already understand what you're trying to say. Guess i'm right that we're talking about different applications here. i visited their website and there are different forms you can find there. There is this APPLICATION FOR ASSESSMENT OVERSEAS EDUCATED NURSE and there's also an APPLICATION FORM NURSES OVERSEAS.

I don't know exactly how to go along with the former but ms. crouch gave me the latter. maybe we can make clarifications with ms. crouch regarding the procedures so it's not confusing. Atleast now its crystal clear. :)

lol. I guess you have a point there. I also think QNC is the cheapest and fastest route to take. I guess we can simplify everything by focusing on one pathway and go on with it, just to avoid further stress and indecisiveness. Well it can be a bit confusing when we're looking at so many options.

But anyway, its still nice to now that other states welcome such registration as well. Still a blessing. :twocents:

Haha yep I saw it already. We are talking about different forms. I don't know why she gave me the assessment form. i'll send it anyway. heheeh. how much does it cost to send documents to australia?

hmmm... actually here via singpost its $30 (php975) if you want your parcel to reach Au in 2-3 days. but coming from the phils you can ask DHL or Fedex about it. yeah just send it its free anyway (except for the shipping fee.:p)

focusing and concentrating.:D..im a bit nervous with their part b challenge test.

yes, under the mutual recognition act..no sweat. and oh by the way the national registration for health professionals will be expected to commence in july 2010.this is a good news indeed.

TRUE.lol :p well as for part B, i feel you. I'm also thinking how to go along with it. i don't have previous RN experience so i don't really know how i can pass the test. but, fortunately, even if something goes wrong with test B, we still stand a chance of getting registered provided that we take their training (i forgot how's it called) so still ok. i'm just excited to be there soon... *sigh*

Actually the national registration can be a good and bad thing. All states have their own set of rules and regulations and by making them uniform, in general is good, however, can be extremely messy. They actually have to adapt the rules in each and every aspect, including nursing degrees and the registration requirements. The registration process can also take ages to finish - imagine PRC in the Philippines.

yes i know but i think before they will implement it, all things are already sorted out, i mean the original plan of implementation was earlier than 2010, but because things just dont go right, they sort things out and i think in 2010 it will be ready. well, yes PRC in the philippines is like immitating a snails pace but we dont know it will be different in Australia. I reckon australian registration process would be different from the philippines. It's Australia not Philippines...:D

hehehe...we got the same situation...RN without experience, i wonder how we can survive the part b test...:D

Its called "Clinical Nursing Practice Module"...but its not guaranteed that we can apply for a registration after completing this module, they will still assess our performance...

now im having a headache, im thinking if i will just do the clinical module or i'll try my luck taking the second part of the test..:(

I never said it will be like Philippines, I just said imagine how PRC is to see the downsides that may or may not go along with the change. :) We can never be too sure anyway that it will work out well too. Actually, it is still not polished. I've been talking to some regulating state boards (NSW, QLD) and they have really told me that they don't really know what will happen. There's no definite plan yet as to how things will be.

I was particularly concerned with this because I am planning to study. If things change, I will be affected for sure. I've raised my concerns to the Universities across Brisbane and Sydney too and they all said the same thing - they don't know. :( Anyway, I'm expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

Yeah well in the first place everything that we do here does not guarantee us of anything. but atleast we stand a fighting chance. its definitely better that they have the Practice Module to back us up once we fail test B. Its better than having nothing at all.

Besides look at the bright side. I'm sure if worse comes to worst and we fail test B and have to undergo the module, with proper training and practice i know we can pass it. We wouldn't want to let that module get in the way of our dreams right? :p You're lucky you're only waiting for your registration then you can already practice our dear profession, unlike most of us here we're having a hard time looking for prospective employers who can sponsor us after. so just relax and prepare yourself for the challenge tests.

Eeeeep... i don't know anything about that. wow sis you're always updated. anyway, i don't know what will happen in the future but i really hope we can all settle our issues first before they implement that rule. I guess it will be harder for overseas nurses specially new grads and those with no experience to find a job or even take the BP if this will happen. I hope they can delay its commencement by 2010 or 2012. atleast hopefully we are all settled by then.
