Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
but if you already have an australian license, finding a job would be a lot more easier..i mean, there are lots of agencies that can give you casual work in different hospitals in your place...so that would be considered as an experience...how about you, where are you applying for a registration?
If the applicant is currently residing overseas and has no experience, it will not be so easy to find a hospital that will sponsor you for the 457 visa since most of them require at least a year experience. But if you are already in Australia with a valid visa which has permission to work then it is fairly easy for one to get a job.
Once you become a registered nurse in QNC or other nursing board in Australia, looking for/finding a job would really be possible, but not exactly "easy". Not every nursing agency in Au caters to registered-inexperienced-overseas-nurses. I used to get in touch with several nursing agencies before and most of them do not cater to inexperienced nurses even if they are registered in Au. Also if you browsed through some threads here, Aussie nurses say that working in hospitals through graduate nursing program (for inexperienced/fresh grad nurses) are highly desirable. So mostly local graduates and PRs get the position. If you happen to attend the seminar in one nursing consultancy in the Philippines, the job placement they offer is in a nursing home not job in hospitals since its hard to get in esp for overseas inexperienced ones.
Anyway it doesn't mean we won't find a job. We surely will. and the work-in-the-hospital possibility is not impossible. im just saying that this is the situation we have today. it may not apply to you but this happens to others.
sorry, but i will disagree...well, if we generalize it overseas nurses can still find job. in my case, i worked as a PCA in one of the hopitals in victoria and working for an agency. (actually, the hospital where im currently working, has nursing vacancies of up to 20 per month.). and they are willing to hire me and in fact, they are asking me if i have friends overseas who are planning to go here, and they know that im an inexperienced one. there are few nursing agencies too who does not require experience, since overseas nurses already got clinical experience from an australian health care facility, prior to their registration. if you want i can give you a nursing agency's number, but this agency is in victoria. anyway, a lot of nursing agencies can be found online, you just have to take your time searching for them.
i think it will be easier to get a job if you already have a license and appropriate visa to work...after all thats what matters most- a license and a visa.

yes with the scarcity of nurses in australia it would be easier. upon interview, i think the most important questions that an employer will ask you are :"have you got a license?"; "have you got a working visa?"...experience, would follow but ive known a lot of agencies and not too big hospitals who are hiring inexperienced nurses as long as they got a license to practice.

The point hotpotato and I are actually saying is, without a visa, it will be hard to get a job. And the fact is, it is really not easy, rather hard, to get an employer or even an agency to sponsor for the working visa if the applicant is inexperienced. Most of the agencies and employers sponsor for the experienced ones. I have checked so many agencies and even hospitals. Yes, there are really many jobs there but the visa is the problem. :) If your agency sponsors inexperienced nurses, then I guess it will be of great help for those currently applying. :)
Actually there are a couple of agencies in the Philippines who do provide employment for inexperienced nurses, however, most here opted to have a DIY application for registration so they will have to find their own employers for the 457 visa. Please do update us if your agency do sponsor (457 visa) for inexperienced overseas nurses so we can help those who are doing a DIY application.

Thanks for the telling this valuable info to us. And its really nice to know that someone's willing to offer you a job in a hospital even though you are inexperienced. however, i just want to quote some things for clarification.
Just like what i said on my previous post, finding job is really possible (its basically the reason why we're here in the first place) but i also said its not exactly "easy". since you work in Australia and you have contacts/prospective employer who's willing to sponsor you once you get your license, its good news. but as we know not everyone resides in Australia and knows of someone who can hire them to work in a hospital.sorry, but i will disagree...well, if we generalize it overseas nurses can still find job
i also said that "I used to get in touch with several nursing agencies before and most of them do not cater to inexperienced nurses even if they are registered in Au." I did not said "all". When I was inquiring with different agencies that time, asking them if they entertain inexperienced nurses but are registered in Au, most of them said no, very few said yes with conditions.there are few nursing agencies too who does not require experience, since overseas nurses already got clinical experience from an australian health care facility, prior to their registration.
Anyway, I just want to clarify my statements. :) Its really nice to know someone from AU since infos on the internet are limited compared to friends and contacts but knowing that there are fellow inexperienced nurses who made it in hospitals make me really want to strive more and work on my license in Au. really made me feel better
sorry for the typo error, no "the". just to clarify, solida_gump might notice it.lolThanks for (the) telling this valuable info to us. Sure! i already told hotpotato about the agency ang the hospital...:nuke:
if we are talking about the sponsorship, i really doubt that agencies and hospitals will do it.it vary from case to case basis, mostly, they are looking for an AU licenced overseas qualified nurse even if they are inexperienced from their country of origin..a good example for this is my CI from which i took my nursing course in the PI...she was a very experienced one, in fact she contacted lots of agencies and hospitals in Au but no one is willing/eager to sponsor her, unless she already got an AU licence to practice, when she applied for a regsitration in the NBV, she was approved to do a bridging course, then she gained a licence to practice in victoria, she was easily hired, shes now working in a post operative ward (i guess)...
what i would like to impart is that, looking for a job in AU is not a problem even if the overseas nurse is inexperienced as long as she/he got the appropriate licence and visa...

just my two cents: an AU licence and a Visa will be your key to find a job easily...:wink2:

Yeah thanks for the contact details rlssem! Well, just to clarify, rlssem is an immigrant.hehe. So i think that's the reason why there are some misunderstanding on our statements. I mean, in my opinion, in rlssem's point of view, its relatively easy to find a job provided that we have a valid Au nursing registration and a visa.
well actually that's the problem, for us who are not immigrants, we may get the Au license but we need sponsorship. and those hospitals would only sponsor us if we have previous work experience. as we know there are many nurses who wants to work in Au, and there are many experienced nurses. basically, if hospitals would hire and sponsor overseas nurses, they want to make sure that they are really qualified, meaning, they'd definitely go for those who have work experience.
In our point of view, finding job isnt really easy, although possible. that's why i said we can find jobs through nursing homes, but seldom in hospitals.
most agencies really cater to migrants and those with valid working permit so it can be really easy for him, but for us, its another story.
Anyway, thanks for informing us though. And good luck on your application. If you have more questions, feel free to post here.
Aelith, rlssem had given me the contact details of the agency, thanks to rlssem btw :) but i think this is just another agency that caters to inexperienced nurses WITH visa (migrants, etc) so not really applicable to us. Anyway, ill PM the contact details to you or to others who are interested and just contact them if they offer sponsorship.
