New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Now call me hater!!! but the truth hurts ?

Even President Gloria Arroyo...lobbying to some countries for economic opportunity...? why encourage this Nurses to stay put and make a difference for every Filipino and served the whole country?

I understand how you all want to move overseas its because, its all about to become economically advantage? yes! its your choice...big time

but without being prepared only leads to your misfortunes.

I will keep posting this because its not a crime to view my opiniion and dont educate me for that matter because its not gonna work!!! :banghead:

yep, i guess some nurses reached their goals in 2-3 years time due to luck and skills.. some nurses reached their goals in 8 years, and when they reached their goal in working and living in UK, then for the next 9 years they would complain how high the taxes are n UK.. Fortunately for those who were able to work in Australia or New Zealand, they pay lesser taxes than nurses in UK.. anyway, we each have our own path, some goes through a long hard road, while others are lucky enough to do it in a short amount of time...

yes, i think i will still be there! i have to make sure that i find an employer once i start the bridging program as they will only provide a short stay visa hehe oh well it would be great if this thread would have a reunion in Oz to celebrate our successful quest to the land down under---and it wouldnt be complete without our leader :bowingpur haha okay, im going overboard here. but anyway, thanks again aelith for creating this thread. it's comforting to know that a lot of people are also trying out for Oz too.

anyway, my mum told me about something that she heard from the news a week ago but of course, i want to confirm it before i go into panic mode and all...did you guys by any chance hear it? the one where australia is starting to become strict in accepting immigrants? wouldnt want it to happen during this time...esp that we'll be spending heaps for the bridging program. i didnt hear it so i dont want to believe it haha

does anyone have a heads up on this?

hi, yes australia maybe sticter in accepting immigrants, but there would be some exceptions or would be a case to case basis.. i mean first of all you will apply there on a "working visa" therefore you are not yet a "pure" immigrant.. Australia won't care to give you working visa as along as they need nurses, but yes perhaps they may be a bit stricter about granting permanent residency.. Nonetheless, once the economy rebounds they will loosen up, and by then you will be qualified for PR.. so i dont think you/we have to worry much about it as of now, bcoz we are applying for 457 working visa (not yet the PR).

chevogirl, do you have any nurse friends who have finished or doing their competency assessment program? what do you expect of the program? easy or hard? do you think your 4-5 months exp. is sufficient to pass the clinical placement part of the program? :)

Haha.. leader? there's no such thing lol. :p But yea, would be awesome to see everyone there later on :) Looking forward to that! By the way, I didn't create the thread hehehe.. :)

Yes, I have posted that news a few days ago here. There are rumors about the 457 visas being lesser in number but its still a rumor. It is mainly because there has been quite a few lay-offs too in Australia because of the global economic status.

thanks so much aelith! you really are an angel! yes, i was talking about NSW. i am planning to attend the bridging course next year. do you know of any scholarships or any form of sponsorship for foreign nurses for this program? thanks again for your help. you've been wonderful!

I don't know any company or agency or hospital that sponsors the bridging or assessment program. I am guessing they wouldn't want to risk money for that in case the person will fail. If you want a cheaper alternative, you can always try CAS as it is one of the cheapest around. You can always transfer your registration to another state later on anyway.

thanks hotpotato101,

However, I also would like to ask the ff. ques. to anyone out there:

1.) Do i really have to take the IELTS first before lodging my application to the QNC?I know it is stated on the QNC1 application package that the council suggest that i should not undertake any English language test until my application has been assessed. but I have a cousin who now works at rockhampton and she tells me that I must take the IELTS first coz I am still here in the philippines and I have finished my nursing course in a country where english is not the first language. I am really confuse, i would like to follow her advice since she'll be the one who's going to pay for my application, but my problem is, i am still unprepared to take the IELTS.

2.) I would also like to email the QNC about this, do they reply to any enquiry that we send them?

3.) Usually how long does it take them to reply to our enquries?

Guys, I really need your help about this, I have been working in a secondary hospital for three years now and I really would like to work in australia. God Bless..

Haha! Funny coz I asked QNC the very same question. :rckn:

anyway, the answer is YES. You can lodge your application without the IELTS yet. BUT, your IELTS will be asked to you before you do your Challenge test / Education Module. Since nowadays, it takes around 2-3mos before you receive the Council's approval letter, you can lodge your application now then register and take your IELTS while waiting. That's what other people do.

Your cousin is right in the sense that, you really need to take your IELTS since you're not from a country where English is the first language. But, IELTS is not a prerequisite prior to lodging of application. This will be asked later on when you do your test or education modules.

You can email QLD Nursing council about this. Yes they reply to inquiries. Ive asked them tons of questions already and they always respond. Based on my experience, they respond to my questions after 1-2 days.

Goodluck to you and your application.

Thanks to those who answered my question.

I am about to fill out the application form for Queensland however I have difficulty answering some items. I would like to ask help from those who have already passed their application.

item 1:

all previous names: should I place n/a?

item 2:

documentary evidence: should I leave it blank or write n/a?

item 3:

nurse id number: blank or n/a?

item 4:

date commenced: I can ask about the exact date of commencement my problem is that, I took biology for 1 and a half year and shifted to nursing... what date should I write here? The date I commenced in college or the date I commenced in my nursing course? My transcript however doesn't show that I took biology. it just says... 2000 1st semester 2nd semester etc... and at the last page.. Graduate: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Item 5:

most recent practice: should I leave this blank or place n/a? together with the statutory declaration?

@kit25 you mean I just have to copy the declaration in item 9 and just change some part of it to state that I don't have any work experience?

Hehe I just want to make sure that I'll be filling up the form correctly to save time and energy. Thanks for those who would help.!

hi nursemavi, i am new in this forum, i am a newly licensed nurse from davao too, I'm trying to start an application to register in NMBWA, i tried to follow on thru in their website. I downloaded the application form and they require for application fee payment to be attached .but i did not see any application fee cost in there. Do you have some info for me about this? thanks:bowingpur

Hi everyone. I contacted QNC today to check on my application. I've learned that I am now eligible for the CAS and should wait for the letter to arrive. I'm just too excited. I hope I can sched for December 2008 for the challenge test. If not, I'll settle for Jan 2009. It's a very long wait. At least 3 months. Good luck everyone.

NMBWA requires experience though, and since you are a newly licensed nurse, I am not sure if you have any experience. If, however, you don't have any experience, you can try applying at Qld, NSW or Vic.

Are you randomly selected for a criminal background check by QNC? If yes, how did you go about it? Just want to make sure, because I'm just planning to get a police clearance and submit to them the original..Hmmm
