New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hi. i guess most Filipinos here have opted to take the master's degree program. why didnt anyone here opt for the Competence assessment course for overseas nurses? anyway, i opted for that path and will go there this 2009. did anyone here by any chance sign up for the NSW competence course too? i have relatives in Oz but none in Sydney so I dont know anyone there except for a friend who is taking the program two months ahead of me. Is anyone here going to Sydney at around March next year??? Even if you're not taking the Bridging course but masteral perhaps? hehe I just want to have Filipino friends there so that I can adjust.

Hope to hear from you people! haha :nurse:

Hi chekovgirl. There are others who took CAS but most of them i think applied in Queensland. Can you please tell us how much you paid for bridging course.. and the duration? Do you have any work experience? and did you do the processing on your own? hehe. thanks!

Not entirely true though. Most here are going for the CAS of QNC. The University degree is ultra expensive and I doubt people would go for that - maybe one or two but not the majority. Some also applied for WA and some in Vic. I think there's one or two here that have applied in NSW too.

I hope I can be there for you but you'll be there way ahead of me heheh. If you are still there by the time I come, I would really love to meet you. :)

i have a friend who took the educational modules instead of the challenge test and he finished all the 4 modules in 1 and a half months.

what a feat! he said the modules aren't that hard.

he just left last oct29 and about to start the clinical placement on the first week of november.

good for him, he's a rich K.

hi sam RN can you give us a few information like...

1. do they require work experience (6months - 1 year)

2. IELTS?

3. bridging program? (for how long?)

4. and of course... the most important.. how much. hehehe

Thanks in advance!

They dont require experience as long as you are a fresh graduate BUT if YOU become a philippine RN for 3yrs already they require 1yr experience. In other words, if you have been registerd as RN for 3 yrs, you should have practiced for at least 1 year but if you have been just registerd a month ago or less than 3 yrs, no experice is acceptable.

wow that's great. and he finished it in less than 2 months. that's good to hear because I would like to do modules than the challenge test. hehe. does your friend have any work experience? what is his plan after his clinical? does he have an employer? sorry for asking too much questions. just excited.

@samRn

Hi, i want to ask again. I graduated in march 2006 and took the board exam in dec 2006, i got the result that I passed around feb or march 2007 and in my license it says registration date july 2007 so it means i would count from the july 2007 or from the date i took the exam? hehehe.

hi aelith! im kajada. im new here ,and i followed all your threads regarding nursing in australia and found them very helpful indeed. i believe that your a person with a good heart. anyways, i would just like to ask you some questions, if its okay. after the bridging course, assuming you are done with the 7 week program, are you considered rn already?or do you have to take written and practical exams after that? does the tuition fee include the materials and exam fees if ever. i am really confused about this. i am not able to find any answerto these questions.please help! thanks and more power to you. God Bless you always.

Thank you for the kind words. :)

As for the bridging course, is that in NSW? If it is, then the answer is yes you will be a registered nurse if you have successfully completed the 7 weeks program. Unlike US, Canada and Philippines, Australia doesn't have any formal exam for one to be considered a registered nurse. The main requirement is that you finish a pre-registration course in Australia or any degree equivalent to that if overseas. Also, an english exam is required for overseas registered nurses.

As for the fees, as far as I know, it includes some study materials but I would advise you to double check with the college of nursing in Burwood about this just to be sure.

The bridging program in NSW consists of 3 weeks theory and 4 weeks clinical practice, both of which are to be completed in Australia. In order to qualify for this bridging program too, you will have to apply for registration in the Nursing and Midwifery board of NSW first. They will advise you if you will need to undergo the said program or not. Only they can nominate you to the bridging program too.

I hope that helps. Should you need more information or clarification, feel free to reply back. :)

hi. it's $80 to the Nurses and Midwives board of NSW for assessment and after you've been accepted $450 for the application fee to the College of Nursing (the institution that offers the competence assessment course (they told me not to call it bridging program hehe but i still think it's the same thing). Finally, it's $9,550 for the entire course.

The program consists of:

-pre-reading (estimated 40 hours)

-on-campus attendance (160-200 hours), and

-workplace clinical attendance (120-160 hours).

i had no work experience during the time I applied for assessment to the NSW board of nursing but i didnt want to be "inexperienced" by the time i get there...so i started volunteering just now for four months before i actually go there. they say it's easier for inexperienced fresh grad nurses to apply in NSW as long as you can show you are competent.

i did everything on my own because my parents didnt want to pay for an agent (stingy!!!!) but the application is so systematic that you don't need one! the thing is, i'm probably going to get an agent once i get my visa so that i can be sure that someone there is going to hire me lol

If you need more information, just check out this site: http://www.nursing.edu.au/OQN/

God bless!

to xysy,

its from the date you have been registered as nurse

yes, i think i will still be there! i have to make sure that i find an employer once i start the bridging program as they will only provide a short stay visa hehe oh well it would be great if this thread would have a reunion in Oz to celebrate our successful quest to the land down under---and it wouldnt be complete without our leader :bowingpur haha okay, im going overboard here. but anyway, thanks again aelith for creating this thread. it's comforting to know that a lot of people are also trying out for Oz too.

anyway, my mum told me about something that she heard from the news a week ago but of course, i want to confirm it before i go into panic mode and all...did you guys by any chance hear it? the one where australia is starting to become strict in accepting immigrants? wouldnt want it to happen during this time...esp that we'll be spending heaps for the bridging program. i didnt hear it so i dont want to believe it haha

does anyone have a heads up on this?
