Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
Hi there mikyong! Me too. I hope we can still be assessed by NBV.... I mean, with this July change looming ahead and all...
I am also waiting to submit a work statement which fulfills their requirements. The statement has been posted and I hope it will reach NBV before the end of the month.
thanks javrn! i might as well include my nbi clearance. i have it anyway.
so... conversion of 456 visa -with No Further Stay Condition- to 457 should not be a problem as this is the exception right? I thought if u have this condition with your 456 you have no choice but to leave aus after three months esp. if you only have a single entry. if you don't mind, what kind of 456 was granted to you? single or multiple entry? did it have the no further stay condition? were u able to find a job agfter the BP or you went back to the phil? btw, where did u take ur bp? apologies, if i asked too many questions. :)

Yes, I have got a letter from them informing me that. anyway, thanks. I hope I will be able to submit it before they move. cheers.
@mikyong,newmac, and drednag: you are all welcome. i wish for your immediate success. i hope you will bring good name to philippine nurses. a filipino got the highest performance rating for the bridging course in our batch.:yeah:
@newmac:
the conversion of a 456 single entry no further stay (nfs) visa to a 457 visa is possible. provided that the holder found an approved business sponsor that nominated him and that he lodged the application for 457 before the 456 expires. let's say that you are on a 456 single entry nfs and you arrived in australia january 1, you have until april 1 to lodge a 457 visa application. if you lodged a 457 application prior to april 1, you will be given a bridging visa that would allow you to stay in australia until a decision is made re your application. same thing is true with all other types of visa with nfs condition. usually the conditions attached to the former visa will be carried over to the bridging visa, that is if you were on a 456, you will not be allowed to work.
but here is the catch: based on personal knowledge, the approval of 457 visa varies and depends on a lot of factors. the earliest approval that i know is two weeks while the latest is five months, with the average between four to six weeks. if money is not a problem that would be fine, but you have to know that it is really expensive to stay in australia without any job.
most of us filipinos in our batch had 456 single entry nfs. most didn't have to go home after the bridging course because they found sponsors and they lodged their 457 application within three months from arrival in australia. they didn't find difficulty in finding jobs because they had 4 to 9 years of paid hospital experience in either iccu, theatre, pacu and medical specialties. employers at that time were looking for highly skilled, experienced nurses and it is all the more true this time. one started to work in two weeks, majority in 4 to 6 weeks, while one in 3 months and another in 5 months. you have to take note however that they all lodged their 457 application before the expiry of their 456. needless to say they got job offers and signed contracts before lodging the 457 because you cant just lodge a 457 without having an approved business sponsor employer.
some of us had to go home to comply with the 456 conditions. you would not want to overstay a single hour otherwise you will be in trouble when you apply for another visa in the future. i did not get any offer because i did not send any application because i really intended to go back home due to family matters. when i got back to the philippines, i applied for a 676 tourist visa and i was granted a 1 year multiple entry in a week's time. maybe diac wasn't so strict with my application because i complied with the conditions of my previous visa, or maybe i just got lucky. although i gathered affidavits of support from relatives with lots of moolah and borrowed a huge amount of money which i deposited in my account.
had to go back to australia because i thought it would be easier to get a job while in oz. it took me months to find a sponsor because i was not really aggressive in job hunting. i sent applications at a rate of 2 to 3 per day and some days i was just bumming around, though i really enjoyed it, so no regrets. one colleague back in the philippines sent applications at a rate of 50 to 100 per day, i cant imagine how he managed it, but he got sponsorship in just a month. he processed his 457 in the phils and got back to australia in two months ready to work. and obviouly he spent much less compared to the colleague who stayed in australia on a bridging visa but was approved in 5 months. got the perspective? so it is really ok to go home after the bridging course. the important thing is to successfully finish your bridging program and get registered here. and don't worry so much about tomorrow. if you get registered, even if you have less experience, you will find a job, even if it takes quite a while. just think this way: if it's for you, it's for you. in his time.
here i am in aged care. it's not bad after all. in fact i love it and i enjoy it so much. it is not less dignified compared to hospital nursing. it is still nursing, with it's own set of skills and learning curve. when you do your work and when you do it exceptionally well, that is what gives dignity to your work. like what jose maria escriva said: " who would dare say that a surgeon's scalpel is more important than a carpenter's saw?" but of course not many people would agree with me because the pay is a bit lower. or maybe i am just old enough to know that in order to be happy and to have peace is to be and do well with what is in the present moment. if i pine for a better pay or a hospital job, it will just give me anxiety and unhappiness. wanting to be in a place or time other than the present is a surefire recipe for unhappiness and misery.
no need to apologise for asking too many questions because this is what the forum is all about. i will be happy to answer all the questions if possible. by the way, i did my bp in perth. i apologise if i prefer not to categorically state the specific program because it would give away too much about my identity. if i tell, some people will recognise me and i dont want that to happen. just in case i want to be naughty here at allnurses in the future. well, i know you are smart enough and if you read my previous posts, you will have figured it out anyway.
cheers! and mabuhay to pinoy nurses!

I don't mind anyone asking me any questions. I believe the purpose of the forum is to share experiences so that the others in the same situation may benefit. So, it's all my pleasure.
My niece came to Oz to help me look after my daughter while I did my research. She did not study. However, there was a condition attached to her tourist visa which says she should not study for more than 3 months. So if BP is less than 3 months, it should be OK. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. cheers.
