New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

thank you Gemini_star....my world crashed when I read the post.... I nearly went to a Canadian agency .

NBV wanted the originals of one of my docs. that means, another month of delay , minimum. this will give me time to research on schools. ETEA, vchn, your Mt alexander, Deakin for january 2011..

where is wahine888? the three of us have similar submissions dates, right?

Haven't heard from wahine yet. Just send your documents right away and always make a follow up phone call or ask for an update from them. When I sent my additional documents, it was only a matter of days and they sent me a response in writing.

hey, lecna31..thanks! i just noticed your post now.... did you take your bp at etea, too? if so, how was it? :yeah:

yes, i did my pb at etea last sept. theory part is really fine and the clinical component is quite different but after a week's exposure you can learn the routines and do the job well esp if your buddy is very helpful. just ask if you don't know...when in doubt ask :)

When we had our BP last year in Perth, some participants had tourist visas but most had 456 visas. The tourist visa given may be valid for multiple travel and usually it is valid for a year but still it will only allow the holder to stay in Australia for a maximum of three months from the date of each arrival. From what I've heard, for a tourist visa to be granted, you must show to the satisfaction of DIAC that you really have money to burn, like your source of income is really high. Payslips and income tax returns can be shown as proof (applicable if you have been working as a nurse in Singapore, KSA, Uk etc., if you are working in the Phils, forget it. 13k a month is not enough). Or that you have a bank account with long history of high deposits, not just a one time lump deposit. Or that you have successful business ( financial statements will do). Or that you are just born rich and your parents are willing to spend a lot of money for you.

The 456 on the other hand, you just need to show that you can support yourself for the whole duration of your business in Australia ( that is your BP program). 2k to 3k AUD/month of your intended stay in your bank account is deemed sufficient. And the approval rate is high especially if you have already paid for the BP. To those of us granted 456 visas, all except one had single entry no further stay condition. One was granted a 456 multiple travel visa, which is like the tourist visa. It permits the holder to travel in and out of Australia for a period of one year, however the person can only stay for a maximum of 3 months. The reason she was given a multiple travel 456 visa, we found out later was that when she filed the 456 application, she ticked the box for yes when asked " do you intend to travel to australia on more than one occasion?" while the rest of us ticked the box for no. She wrote in her application that the reason she is applying for the 456 was to join the BP program AND to look for employment and apply for 457 visa after getting registered as a nurse. So maybe DIAC will just give you what you ask of them. If she hadn't found sponsorship within three months, she could've just gone to Singapore or Hongkong for a couple of days and gone back to Oz and continue her job hunting. To maximise your 456, come to Oz 1 to 2 days before start of your BP. I even arrived the same day. Arrived in Perth 1 am, and the BP program started at 8am. haha. But I couldn't have made it without the help of a friend in Perth.;)

First, I would like to thank you for this very informative response, javRN. kudos

I am a nurse with no job at present, belong in a, lets say, middle class family. I have a joint account with my mom with enough moolah to show off to the embassy, but the problem is the amount was transferred all at once to another bank and im quite iffy now if it still be valid for the embassy to consider that it has in fact a history of deposits made in our previous bank.

and one more, do you have knowledge about a sponsored tourist visa applcation? I am researching about it now. if someone will use this kind of visa, i think it will be the sponsor who will show off his/her credentials to prove that she/he is eligible and has the capacity to sponsor a relative, right? correct me if im wrong pls. :)

and oh, what happened to you just proved that youre flexible, mate. haha it's really nice reading/ knowing different experiences from you guys. . will consider the heads up. we're learning from you people. thank you:D

Weeks prior to expiration of your 456,specially if it does not have a "NO FURTHER STAY CONDITION" you can apply for a tourists visa to extend your stay, stating your reasons that you wanted to see more of Australia and looking for employer.Case officer who will handle you application knows that once you are taking the BP, the purpose was to find a Registered Nursing Job in the future, and you will be given another 3 months. About the financial requirements its just about 2000k to 3000k they are not very particular with it, since you had proven that you took the BP and you obliged with the conditions of your previous visa. Wish you all the best. Finally RN's i have gone through all of the things that you are into now . I am now happy working here in Adelaide Paediatrics Department and expecting my first forthnight salary soon.Goodluck to your AUSTRALIAN DREAM.

thanks for sharing, RN oz1. been reading all your responses in the thread. they're very helpful. thanks. we'll see what is suited for us. hehe

@jayrn rn oz1 very informative indeed

to those who were granted visa 456, how long is the visa usually valid for either single and multiple entry? if the BP program is on october, and i wish to apply now (june), will they issue a visa which will be valid a few days before the commence of the program in october or do they issue a visa with an earlier validity date?

For subclass 676 tourist visa, you may include in your application the history of the previous account so there's nothing to worry about. Include the previous bank statements. What is important to show to the case officer is that you have ready and unlimited access to that account while you are in Australia. That means you have an international atm card in your name attached to that account. If you have a supplementary credit card, include it as well. Your mom can also make a notarized affidavit stating that she is aware of your intended visit to Oz and that she has the capacity and will support you financially for any unexpected and emergency expenses that you may incur beyond your means while in Oz. Support documents may include her income tax returns, bank statements, financial audit report of her businesses, lease contracts of owned rental properties, land titles, stocks, bonds etc.. You may also include affidavits of support from relatives who have much moolah and attach supporting documents as well. However the 676 validity period really depends on the case officer and the reasons you state for your visit. Some are granted only 3 months, others 6 to 12 months. One colleague applied for 676 for the sole reason of taking the BP program and the case officer called her to change her application to 456 because the reason is for a short term business activity. btw undergoing a BP is considered a business activity.

You may also apply for a subclass 679, which I think is the family sponsored visa. A friend of mine from Cagayan got approved for this visa when she had to do her Part B challenge test in CQU Rockhampton,QLD. She had an aunt in Townsville,QLD who became an Australian citizen years back. My friend didn't have to show any financial documents. It is really up to the sponsor. In her case, her aunt was just required to post a bond worth 10k AUD. The 679 is only good for one travel and the holder is not permitted to extend her stay. So if you have to take this path you have to make sure that you apply for at least 6months validity. Normally what is given is only three months though in some cases, a validity period of one year may be given. Again that would depend on the reasons your sponsor will supply DIAC.

So it's really up to you which visa to apply. But I think the most appropriate visa is 456. My friends who had the 676 visa got their visas even before they thought of BP program. They got their visas for visit purposes only and it was only incidental that they decided to avail of the BP program. If you have at least two years of specialist experience under your belt, like ICU, ER, OR, Pacu,Nicu or ortho, you can easily get 457 sponsorship. Finding 457 sponsorship just takes a long time if you have no hospital experience. Some of us had to go back home after being registered and have to do applications online. It is much cheaper to stay in the Phils than wait for months here in Oz even if you are just crashing a friend's place or live with your relatives. Cheers!

The visa validity for both single entry and multiple entry is usually for one year. For single entry that means you have only three months from the date of your arrival in Oz. For multiple entry, you have three months from the date of each arrival. So if you will be granted a single entry visa by July 7,and you arrive in Melbourne August 28, you can stay upto November 28. If granted multiple travel, and you arrive in Melbourne Aug 28, you must leave the country by Nov 28, but you can come back by December 1 and you can stay until March 1 the following year. I suggest you download the medical requirements now and comply right away because for some it can really take time if you have some issues. Good luck. Visa approval for 456 is quick like 4 to 6 days if and the big if is that you have complete requirements and you don't have medical issues. Otherwise it could take months.

hi everybody! it's my first post here. just finished reading the entire thread. and im very appreciative of everyone for the help.

i'll be attending the july intake of VCHN (under NMBWA) thru 456 visa. problem is, i have a "NO FURTHER STAY" condition attached to it. can i still apply for a tourist visa?

:lvan:

javrn, thanks indeed. failed to check out the medical requirement for this visa.

"No further stay" is also something im worried about. If u have this on your visa, that means you will just be in australia for 3 months for the bp and you cant convert your visa to another type while in australia. Though, in exceptional circumstances, whatever that means, this can be waived. Please enlighten me if im wrong.

is health examination mandatory for 456 visa because we intend to do the BP -which will require us to enter hospitals etc..? or a case to case basis?

in registering for nbv and filling up the forms, if ever there will be mistakes in ticking the box or filling up the infos, what will happen? will they let you do it again?

got your message. but sorry that I can't send private messages yet. I am not sure it's allowed to send my private mail address. If it's allowed, I would be more than happy to help in anyway possible.

I applied to NBV and found out that William Light Institute here in Adelaide offers Uni Ballarath's bridging program which is a good thing for me as I am a student here in Adelaide.

If there is a mistake in your application form or some information is missing, then NBV would return the form and advice you to send it back after correcting it. So no worries.

In my case, I have applied to NBV on 1st of April and so far they have contacted me twice about my initial registration and work statement. I have yet to submit a work statement which is up to their standard. I hope I'll be able to send it before NBV ceases to exist.......

If you were trained in your home country and you have worked at home, I don't think you will face so much difficulties. Try to get the things right in the first go. Remember, there will not be NBV after the end of June..........so if you want to get that letter from NBV, act fast.

Good luck.

hi,

If you are applying for a tourist visa or any other visa, the money doesn't need to be in your account. If you have a friend who let's say owns a business, you can get a letter from him/her saying that he/she would be responsible for all your expenses while you are in Australia. Then you need to get his/her (or Company's) bank statement.

I brought my niece to Australia on tourist visa and I got a letter from my husband (as the CEO of his company) and his company's bank statement. Got the visa within 3 days.........
