New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

thanks terdjay for the reply.. i really appreciate..

i'm not sure if visa 456 multiple entry is enough but that's what they usually give to fil.

Hello Nurses,

I have just received my registration from the NBV today which is a very good news..:) the certificate is still hot to touch :D lol..

However, this is a bad news, currently only 4 among the 28 of us in our batch got a job...i have never thought it will be like this contrary to what ive known before...it is a bit hard now to find a job...yes there are job vacancies here and there but most of the employers need a specific experience wether it would be a local or an overseas experience, alternatively you will have the option to do a grad year program but then it depends upon the outcome of the interview...and most of the programs will start january or february each year.

i feel so sad with my batchmates who have spent thousands of dollars just to gain a registration, some of them will have their visas expiring soon, the soonest is next month and all of their (some) applications were unsuccessful...i always say "i thought australia is in need of nurses, so here we are now, how come they are so picky?"....:(

but like what they always say, patience is a virtue...im not being conceited, but im lucky that i am a Permanent resident...well, for me right now im just happy that i made it, i have the registration now and im ready for my upcoming holiday this july :D :D :D

PS: its getting cold out here, its freaking freezing...i bet a coffee shop business would really click..hehe..

yup, ryan, you are lucky because you can do casual jobs or part time nursing jobs since you won't need sponsorship :) try that little angels nursing agency and mediserve.

Sorry about my typo error guys

"simply because they cant vacancies... "--> this should be "simply because they are no vacancies.."...:)

yes @chabeli, ive heard about this two nursing agencies, in fact we went to the office of angels nursing agency yesterday, but unfortunately they were closed, bad timing...the rest of my mates went to mediserve yesterday.

by the way, whats your surname? have you tried checking your name at the NBV website? it makes me happy to see my name in the website's public register...:D

pls help.. i've already sent the stat dec NBV reuired and my next step would be to apply for the visa.. i would just like to ask about the financial req. is 17k aud enough? because my aunt will sponsor me. i'm planning to go to deakin with a tuition fee of 9900 something. does the embassy requires the funds to be available at least 3 or 6 months before the date of application? and last question, do they need an additional evidence of source of funds other than the bank statement and pay slips..

pls help me.. i'm planning to go to etea by sept or if not probably by jan.. i already emailed deakin and they said that the deadline for the jan bp is on sept 07

correct me if I'm wrong, 17k is your required show money if you will be studying for a year right?, but if your BP is only for 3 mos, i don't think you need 17k

go over the ff:

Even for 3,6,12 months it's the same they will compute per year, you really have sufficient funds, if you have are married they even compute even though they are not going with you. I hope this will help.

thanks RN oz 1 for verifying and the links you provided.. i really hope its enough..

anyad if you plan to study for a year add the ff: the tution fee + living expense (18K/yr) + insurance + air fare. 17k is not enough for a 1 year prog.. i remember when i planned to take up a course before in sydney for a program costing 14K (not nursing) they required me to provide funds around 30K aud (more than 1.5 mil) .. thank God i've seen this site and learned a lot about the bp program..

Good day friends, Im from the Philippines and I am planning to submit my application in NBV as well. I humbly asking anyone here to pls. fill in my knowledge deficits. =p

Does anyone of you knows if NBV considers Volunteering job and hospital training(3 months in MICU) as work experience? or will i be in need of a statutory declaration? i want everything to go smoothly with regards to my application that's why if possible i wanted my statutory dec. done as early as now if it would be best for me to do so. I need your insights and advices, mates. thank you.

As far as i know, they accept volunteer job as long as u can provide the official statement which stated the amount of hours and else. But i'm afraid that hospital training isn't include, since it's not a professional work as RN.

So, r u going to apply for NBV?! Same with me here, i'm just waiting for the good news to come now. I hope the best for all of us, keep me posted and good to know u... Anyway i'm from Indonesia.

4/28? wow. that's a bit rough. what kind of experience are they looking for in victoria? so is it correct for me to say that there are a lot of nursing positions open but they all require experience? around how many years experience would you say is safe? thanks!

Ryan will you know before the program the hospital where you'll be doing your clinical placement or you'll know it prior to the placement? What if you rented a 3 mos accommodation in Melbourne only to find out that your placement will be on warnambool? You just can't cancel the remaining 2 mos can you? It's a little bit worrying paying for 2 accomodation at the same time. The moolah can be use for something else like food and leisure.

Also, what is the name of the scholarship you applied for in deakin? It's worth 3k right? At 7k I'd rather wait for the Jan intake of deakin rather than the 12k etea.

Lastly, is there a graduation ceremony upon bp completion? My family wanted to attend my bp graduation if there is since they weren't able to attend my grad in the phils. And at the same time, have a tour of Melbourne and visit some family friends there.

Thanks very much. Cheers mate.

in my case, during the duration of the theory component of the course the school will organise the clinical placements.so maybe two weeks prior to the commencement of the clinical they will let you know. thats one of the concerns of the students, my classmate is renting a house somewhere and then she was forced to rent another house in portland for her clinical placement for one month. better for you to discuss that concern with your course coordinator.but again you will have no choice if its like that, what you are after is to complete the bp.

if you are a Permanent resident you can apply for a AU$2,000 scholarship coming from the department of human services...and the reamaining balance can be paid through FEE-HELP by the australian government, so you dont have to spend a single cent..;) except for the school materials that you might need...

Deakin university is conducting a graduation ceremony for formality sake, it will just take for about 30 minutes or so...nothing special just the handling out and presentation of the course comletion certificate to the students, its not the typical graduation that we all know, and yes you can bring your family.:)

PS: you cant proceed to your clinical placement if you fail the theory component of the course, thats deakin's policy...just so you know..thats why they cant tell you right from the very start as to where are you going to have your clinicals because they are counting the number of students who can proceed to the clinicals.

newmac, reiken, countmein..hey, dudes..have you received your NBV letters already? im hoping we'd be classmates in Oz

best of luck everyone!!!

hey there, indonurse! :) I am confused whether to include the MICU training or not because it was done after I have registered here in the Philippines, so I assume it is still considered as a professional work item since i was already holding a license at that time.

yes, im going to apply for NBV. but i must admit im still clouded with some confusions in mind about the process of application, need more reading i guess. hehe

nice to know you too. do keep us informed with re: your application as well, mate. I will do the same. and I wish everyone here the best of luck. =)
