New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi ms_star!

Nice to hear that we'll be going to the same school.. when are you leaving?

when are you arriving? if there is still slot with the uni accomodation, grab it. but try visitng the website bsabendigo.com.au then go to marketplace then share accomodation. i will ask a filipino here if she is still accepting boarders... what visa are you in? be ready with warm clothing, super cold here...

hi Chabeli

I couldn't send a PM yet.. Congratulations on your job offer!

anyway, how did you apply for a job? did the school give you list of hospitals where you can apply?

how far is the clinical placement and where did you stay? I'm still have trouble finding my accommodation because most of the rent would require a minimum stay of 6 months.

the school never helped with jobhunting. you have to do it on your own. i applied online through seek.com.au and my classmates too... there is a batch of students from uni of ballarat doing clinical placement at la trobe now.

Can someone pls tell what hospitals etea is affiliated with? Are these hospitals far from etea like an hour commute?

Congrats in finding a job in bendigo. I would like to work there too since it's a semi rural city. It sure is a great place to work and live.

hey, newmac...thanks (again!..hehehe)... i dont think etea has an online application, but you can send your application and attachments by way of email..as long as you have arranged for the payment of the assessment fee..

nope, you dont need the visa when you apply, you need it before taking the course, so you can send your application even without the visa yet...for the police check, i sent the nbi clearance.. :)

terdjay, i was informed that accomodations near etea are from aud 150 to aud 180 per week...

best of luck everyone!

when i called etea, the lady said i have to send my docs via courier. i'll give them a call again. all docs have to be certified... the same way as nbv??? or do i just scan the same docs i sent to nbv. i have an extra "set". how about for the fee? did u use bank draft? do they accept credit card? if they don't then i will really end up sending the docs by courier. how did u do urs? ..... thanks for the info! :)

thanks chabeli and congratulations too. i will be in melbourne by june9 and im on a student visa. yes will check out the website you gave and pls let me know if the filo will still accept boarders.

thanks again!!

@drednag: Sent you a PM, bro!

@chabeli: Congratulations, for getting a job there bro! I know that's the next challenge a BP graduate needs to overcome after getting registered to NBV sans the visa expiration. It's also good to see you here becoming visible again in the thread updating everyone about your experience in Bendigo. Keep it up!

@newmac: How's your application, bro? Have you also received your NBV eligibility letter? And if so, when are you intending to take your IRON course at ETEA? :coollook:

hey, bro..yup, it is better to send it by courier..that's what i did with mine, i sent my application and the documents via fedex...and yes, you have to have your documents certified (by a notary public), just like what you did with your application to nbv.

i advise that you have your documents certified anew and dont just scan the ones you sent to nbv. that's what i did with mine, i photocopied the documents again then went to the notary public to have them certified. it's just a few documents, bro: if i remember correctly, you just need to send certified copies of you passport id page, ielts result, nbv letter, resume (orig), police clearance...that's it, i think...

as for the assessment fee, i requested my sister-in-law to pay for it (hehehehe) since she's in melbourne. but, when i asked etea, they said you can pay by bank draft. that is how im paying for the tuition fee.

all the best, bro!:up::up::up:

yup it is a nice city, peaceful and quiet. not very busy. but it is not like our kind of rural, if this is in the philippines, it would be a city, lol. it's really big and developed, but not a lot of skyriser buildings. it was very hard to get a job because when our batch from la trobe came, they just hired 11 indians from uni of ballarat so all the slots were filled up for the year. my contract is only 1 year to replace someone on maternity leave but hr told me, they will transfer me to acute care or er once there is vacancy.

half of our class did not get a job, and they just returned to their countries because of visa expiry. i was lucky that i can extend my visa because it didn't have the restriction like the indians did. the japanese also went back to japan frustrated. the others got jobs in adelaide. only 2 of us got a job here in victoria. one was in aged care in melbourne and me here in bendigo. the other filipino went back to uk and maybe she will just apply for pr after she finishes another year in uk. i don't want to be a discouragement but i want to show you the real picture.

they don't have a lot of slots for full time permanent, and they can easily hire you as casual but then again, we need to have a full time permanent job in order to be sponsored a 457 visa.

so just be persistent, expect obstacles, be ready for them and wait patiently and prayerfully for your opportunity..

all the best to everyone.

Hi Chabeli,

I plan to go there on June 11. I've inquired with the university accommodation but they emailed me that dont offer it to those studying for less than 6 months. I'm also on student visa.. actually still waiting for my visa to come out. i hope it will come out soon.

@Chabeli

I see.. I thought studying in a university will give us more edge. Because in ETEA, they give you list of hospitals where you can apply and provide you with visa assistance.

I hope that we'll be as lucky as you are.

I heard from a friend that it's really hard to get a job.

Specializes in Neonatal Intensive Care.
