New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Thanks Girlashh! I was really thinking of doing that. You're right, I don't expect them to exert much effort in doing a favor for just one person. My plan is to make a work statement then, just let them confirm and sign it. But, the problem is that I have never seen a work statement before. I am currently looking for one. If by any chance, do you have a sample there that I can follow? You may erase the personal details for privacy. Does anyone here have one?

Thank you guys! I really appreciate all your answers! :D

Hi kristeeta! The work statement must be in company letterhead, making it official.I suggest u make a work statement just a guide for them to follow. The Document must also include the direct email address of the signatory. Make sure all the required information is present;please refer to the website of your chosen state. pm me your e-mail address so i could help u with the template your asking :)

hello, strictly speaking they are correct to insist that they can only provide you with a "training" certificate because for them "work" is "paid employment". thus, you must use your charm, ask for their help so to speak in assisting you to meet your documentary needs. Nonetheless, such training certificate is still acceptable in australia, just have to explain it in your resume.. good luck..

I agree with cioman94. The volunteers we had in our hospital received only a training certificate. I was a contractual nurse so i was able to get a work statement; however, you could still try your luck in acquiring one. :yeah:

it for you)..

however, sometime ago i fully knew that there is an institution in NZ that will sponsor your bridging course expenses, it is the Guardian Healthcare group of NZ, but said company was already sold to another firm so i dont know the name of the new company but it still operating there in NZ.. just research on it if you like, just google it.. good luck..

@cioman94,

hi! really they cud sponsor, as in they wud handle all bridging course expenses??? :yeah: how did u know?

i just googled it, the Guardian Heathcare is now called BUPA.

when I was asked to make a stat. dec. (reason for not having work experience since i've been a reg. nurse in the phil since 2007) -i just said i have been employed in a different filed of work. Im not really sure if that was the best thing to say but it is what it is. :)

thanks newmac :redbeathe

i've read from previous threads that there are some who actually did BP without experience but how to 'nicely' put that in a stat. dec. without sounding incompetent makes me wonder...

i have no experience you see, so m feelin' a bit apprehensive. :uhoh3: i do plan to apply in a graduate nurse program if m blessed to go on with this AU-BP plan. :redpinkhe

I suggest you go for Nbv coz it's cheaper and faster. Curtin is very long and very very expensive. It is an excellent option for fresh graduates with no/limited experience and middle aged 2nd coursers with no/limited experience also. The downside is the humongous expense you'll be burning. But opportunities are great nonetheless upon graduating bec you'll have an aus diploma and you'll be considered a local graduate (therefore a priority as compared with those who took the 3 mos bp). On one hand the prob with nbv is the very long queue and very competitive slots. I'm curious as well with the opportunites upon graduating this. I've heard that most graduates of this program end up in nursing homes which are in desperate need of nurses. Locals prefer hospitals so nursing slots there are competitive. That's why nrsg homes court bp students and bribe them with pr which is good for the overseas nurse and the nursing home. Besides nursing home they end up in rural hospitals. Can someone pls clarify on this scenario.

hi terdjay! yes i, too wud want to go to Curtin but due to financial reasons (it's soooo expensive) i'd best try my luck in VIC's BP, then start a career as a rural nurse :nurse:

i just hope&pray that my plan wud somehow work.:twocents:

well few years back i was planning to become a nurse in NZ but they suddenly denied applications of 2nd coursers like me hence i did not pursue it anymore. at that time i was dealing with a legitimate agency who offered such arrangement whereby guardian group will pay for the tuition fee of BP.. the rest of the expenses will of course be shouldered by me.. hope this clarifies..

I really appreciate it Girlashh! :)

I understand terdjay.. you see, I don't think it's wise to submit my documents to NBV this time around since it will not exist anymore after july... NMBA are already accepting documents if I'm not mistaken, as stated in my application in QNC.

You may wish to withdraw your application and reapply to the new Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency from 1 July 2010. Further information about the new agency and the development of the standards and processes is available at .....www

and this also

We will hold your application until the commencement of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the determination of standards for demonstrating competence. We will forward you further correspondence when these standards have been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

waiting could be beneficial but this uncertainty is killing me

So does this mean that the NBV won't be accepting application anymore? Can someone confirm this?

Thanks!

from what I know, they're still accepting applications for assessment, the dilemma is that it takes about 3-5 mos to get assessed. By the time your papers got assessed, NBV will not exist anymore. So there's a probability that the new governing body--- which is Nursing and Midwifery board of australia, will not recognize the assessment made by the NBV and may require REASSESSMENt under the new system.. and if so, my $145 assessment fee, and about P2,000 pesos for notarization-courier-etc will go to waste.
