New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to ask which state is it best for me to apply to in Australia?

What are the pros and cons of each state ? Thanks!

hello, was your question answered already? anyway, if not yet, my personal opinion is that better wait for the national registration in july 2010, only then we would have a clear picture of what is best for you. but you can still now, however you have to check which state still offers 2 mos. bridging course, how much, and if they require work experience, these are the things you must consider in choosing what state you should apply.. hope other members could answer your queries in detail.. good luck,.

Hi Everyone,

I am a nurse in the Philippines currently working in a tertiary hospital in Makati. I have one year experience and have passed the IELTS. I was hoping to find sponsors in either australia or nz who would be willing to pay for the cost of my bridging program.

Do you guys have any advice? I have applied for registration for the state of victoria and nz. :D

Any advice is appreciated guys.

Thanks!

im not totally sure if there is an institution in australia that would sponsor your expenses esp. the bridging program, hopefully there is one.. anyway, what ive heard is that there are agencies there in metro manila which are facilitating such set-up, you check on it (im here in davao, cant check it for you)..

however, sometime ago i fully knew that there is an institution in NZ that will sponsor your bridging course expenses, it is the Guardian Healthcare group of NZ, but said company was already sold to another firm so i dont know the name of the new company but it still operating there in NZ.. just research on it if you like, just google it.. good luck..

hi anybody here waiting for the national registration this july? i heard there's going to be a few changes..

> there will only be one nursing board, hence, once you are registered then you can practice anywhere in australia.

> i bet the CAS system of QNC will no longer be implemented, thus, it would then be purely "bridging program" way for overseas nurses to obtain RN license.

> other than the above, most of the standard policies remain the same.. so far, there is no policy that requires overseas nurses to have certain length of experience in order to qualify for australian RN licensing, let's just hope that it would remain that way so that the opportunity would still be there esp. for nurses with limited experience.

let's cross our fingers then and cross the bridge on july 2010..

MAY 11, 2008 9:02 PM is the 2nd Anniversary of this hyperactive thread which was started by a certain rnrn07.. just imagine how many nurses have benefited from this thread.. remembering Aelith who also have been very helpful with many of members' queries way back then..

signing out, good night but keep the lights on..

Hi terdjay, I'm also interested and weighing my options. Where did you get the info about opportunity in rph, scgh etc after conversion program in curtin? Does curtin secure/assist in job placement after the conversion or your on your own?

Curtin is affiliated with all the leading hospitals in wa bec it's a premiere uni. Its 1 yr conversion program is unaffected by the natl registration. Employers go to curtin to recruit. Right now, only pr and Aussies are being recruited bec WA is having financial mismanagement. Public health budget was cut. Private hospitals here are overstaffed and public hospitals are not sponsoring. But when the mining industry goes full blast, things will stabilize again because it will rain money and immigrants. So by the time you graduate, things are now back to normal. Besides, when you graduate your license is now valid everywhere so why settle in Perth? Curtin is a premiere uni in aus, so you can expect employment from leading hospitals in other states. Politics here in WA is weird. Believe me. But if you can find a job here then good for you. Living in the most isolated city has its own charm.

Thanks Girlashh! I was really thinking of doing that. You're right, I don't expect them to exert much effort in doing a favor for just one person. My plan is to make a work statement then, just let them confirm and sign it. But, the problem is that I have never seen a work statement before. I am currently looking for one. If by any chance, do you have a sample there that I can follow? You may erase the personal details for privacy. Does anyone here have one?

Thank you guys! I really appreciate all your answers! :D

Usually the hospital issues a letter of employment but you have to approach either personnel or the chief nurse that you would want a specific format or details. I had mine revised three times :) Alternatively, you could ask for the standard certificate they are issuing then ask for the additional details in a separate letter. That works too.

Hi NurseJF! I already approached the chief nurse herself but she was too busy to accommodate me so she pointed me to another person. Why was yours revised 3 times? Did the NBV ask you to revise it? Actually, I already have my certificate. I'm just after the work statement now. Thank you for the reply! :)

thanks cioman94! so you're from Davao too? small world. As of now, I'm just having problems with my work statement. thanks.

thanks for the info, i'll probably go for this program...

thanks for the info, i'll probably go for this program...

Since you have 2 yrs MS experience I suggest you go for Nbv coz it's cheaper and faster. Curtin is very long and very very expensive. It is an excellent option for fresh graduates with no/limited experience and middle aged 2nd coursers with no/limited experience also. The downside is the humongous expense you'll be burning. But opportunities are great nonetheless upon graduating bec you'll have an aus diploma and you'll be considered a local graduate (therefore a priority as compared with those who took the 3 mos bp). On one hand the prob with nbv is the very long queue and very competitive slots. I'm curious as well with the opportunites upon graduating this. I've heard that most graduates of this program end up in nursing homes which are in desperate need of nurses. Locals prefer hospitals so nursing slots there are competitive. That's why nrsg homes court bp students and bribe them with pr which is good for the overseas nurse and the nursing home. Besides nursing home they end up in rural hospitals. Can someone pls clarify on this scenario.

I understand terdjay.. you see, I don't think it's wise to submit my documents to NBV this time around since it will not exist anymore after july... NMBA are already accepting documents if I'm not mistaken, as stated in my application in QNC.

You may wish to withdraw your application and reapply to the new Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency from 1 July 2010. Further information about the new agency and the development of the standards and processes is available at .....www

and this also

We will hold your application until the commencement of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the determination of standards for demonstrating competence. We will forward you further correspondence when these standards have been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

waiting could be beneficial but this uncertainty is killing me
