New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hey, just a suggestion for others who will be going to their BPs in the near future. As early as now check your immunization records. I know someone who should have left for CQU's clinical placement late last month but postponed till next month because she said that the last time she had a titer drawn it showed that she did not seroconvert. But she told me she was absolutely positive she had completed the series of Hepa B shots a few years back so to be sure she opted to have a booster and is now waiting for yet another few weeks to have a titer drawn.

I know different BP providers have different rules/requirements for immunizations and I think I've read somewhere (not sure if here) that some schools give some vaccines for free (?) but I think it won't hurt to make sure that as early as now we have all the necessary shots. I for one am completing my Hepa B and MMR shots. I found out last month that my mom only had me vaccinated for measles but not MMR. And I am also one of those unfortunate people who did not seroconvert although I too have completed my Hepa B shots years ago.

Well, sorry if some might think this is off-topic already but I think it's still a valid one... :lol2:

@chocokat79 - Now, that one's not out of topic. I've been thinking of getting the vaccines ASAP too as Ballarat and another forumer Kuchi have suggested. I know someone who got her shots in the hospital where she completed her BP for free so you're right, different institutions have different policies but for those of us who don't want any delays, completing the shots as early as possible is a smart move. Could you PM me the all the shots we have to get? I lost my baby book already!

your mom remembered?!! [or do] you still have your baby book? my mom won't remember either... no way i'll find out which one i got. im completely clueless with these shots requirements. can i just re-do all shots?!:lol2::idea::p:uhoh3:

@wahine888 and yes this is a completely different topic. are we hacking the thread? how about another thread for this one[?]

@NewMac Really? I thought everything that has got to do with this IRON application (including this shot thingie) is related to this thread! LOL. Actually, this vaccine topic was discussed in the "Anybody applied in Victoria? plans?..." I don't know why I'm still jumping from one thread to another, it's tiring sometimes but it's also addictive! Yes, someone said in that thread that you can re-do all the shot :)

maybe we can ask chabeli and ryan, they may be able to say something about this one. they're a bit busy nowadays, im afraid. :)

chabeli did all his shots 3 days before leaving. he got all from a pediatrician who just gave him a baby book and certified the checklist. the only thing he did not get was the swine flu because it was already end of year and i guess they renew the flu vaccine each year. but he got a shot from the uni's clinic before he commenced his clinical placement.

the bp providers are not giving it for free. when you're on student visa, you are required to have an oshc, overseas student health coverage... including in the coverage are some of the common shots, so you only show the card to the clinic that offers the shots and you don't have to pay for it.

here's from his checklist: we asked the doctor to countersign on each box aside from the baby book.

hepatitis a

hepatitis b

influenza

hpn1 influenza

measles

mumps

rubella

tuberculosis (tb)

tetorifice

meningococcal c

varicella (chickenpox)

pertussis (whooping cough)

diptheria

polio

Thanks chabelii ! That's a long list uh-oh.. Hmmm That's for Victoria right? What I know for QNC is they only require Hepa B but you have to show documentation for the 3 shots AND a reactive titre after. And TB test too. But for NSW they need documentation of the following:

MMR (2 shots)

DPT (single adult dose)

Hepa B (3 shots plus reactive titre)

Varicella titre or a diagnosis of Chickenpox signed by a doctor

and of course the TB test but it should be done there in NSW in an accredited clinic.

That's why I'm redoing everything, except for the Chickenpox (as I've had them when I was in high school). Yes I still have my baby book but back then my mom took me to different pediatricians and we moved a lot so either my shots weren't really administered or the doctor just forgot to sign them. Anyway my baby book shows I had incomplete vaccines. :uhoh3:

Well I don't want you guys to like open a brand new discussion here about required shots if you don't feel like it. Just a friendly reminder. As I've said I know someone who was delayed for CQU because of her Hepa B titre. And because she told me, I was prompted to do a titre of my Hepa B too and yep, also non-reactive! So at least while we're waiting for our assessments I just thought we might as well make good use of our time and complete other requirements...

@Wahine888: yes I know the feeling. Checking the threads that I subscribed to is very addicting. Like, my day won't be complete without logging in to allnurses haha! :lol2:

i would just like to ask if the bridging programs would still be available come july of this year. I am afraid that it will be discontinued and the only way to be registered would be to study undergrad again

Hi there forumjunkie. I suggest you give the Board of Nursing of your choice a ring, as well as your prospective BP provider. They're the ones who'll know for sure. Just in case you're considering NSW, they told me (as of the 2nd week of January) that yes, they are still accepting overseas applicants. Likewise I called up the only accredited BP Provider, The College of Nursing, and they too said that yes, they still have intakes till September of this year. But they're not sure about 2011 though.

Hi,I want to enrol for the return to practice course at ETEA, i would llike to know where ETEA send the student for clinical placement. Thanks for answering.

@ forumjunkie I just rang NBV and asked your concern and she said that she is not sure what changes will happen after the national registration new policies will be implemented. There are no advises yet as of the moment. We just have to keep an eye on their website. You can also check these sites:

@chocokat79 I guess that makes the three of us 'forumjunkies' :)

This National Registration changes is scaring me. I just hope we can still do the IRON after that or something better.
