New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Just about right. I would send them a statutory declaration about why you do not have work experience as to avoid being advised to send one to them after they receive your application.

GOD BLESS to all of us! :heartbeat:redbeathe :heartbeat

Hi,

I have been reading the forums but just too lazy to post. :D It is very nice to know that there are quite a number of us Filipinos who are trying our luck to get to Aus and live a new life. Well, I would like to share some of what I have encountered while applying for NBV and stuff.

Well, just a bit of info first, I am a 2nd courser (so those who think 2nd coursers would have a problem with NBV) graduated my 1st degree in AB ECO at ADMU and then took up BSN at Dr. Carlos Lanting College. I took my boards last Nov. 2008 and then got my license the following year.

Like most, after getting my license, I underwent numerous trainings and seminars. Yes, that would include BLS, ACLS, Dialysis, IVT, and more... like plenty more. Since a fresh grad in nursing would probably be lost while we are in search of a way to get to the US. I also filed for NCLEX and got my eligibility but never took the exam as I have not seen the urgency to do so due to the retrogression.

While pondering to take up MSN, I found a way to get to Australia either by Competence Assessment Service (CAS) program or International Registration for Overseas Nurses (IRON) program through an Migration Agent. So in the end, I opted to apply with Iron and canceled my application for taking up MSN.

I applied with NBV since July 2009, hoping to get into the first batch of LaTrobe for the October classes which was later on moved to January 2010 classes. Unfortunately, NBV was very strict asking for revisions of documents and asking for further proof and more documents to substantiate my being an RN here in the Philippines. I learned that they are being super strict because of many Filipinos falsifying their documents. So every time that they would be asking for further docs, it would postpone my application and of course incur a set back for my application will again be placed underneath the many applications that they are processing. And I have to call NBV to notify them that I have already sent the docs that they were asking for.

Also, one setback is that I am a 2nd courser who took up my entire nursing course for 2 years. This is one reason that NBV was asking me for further information on how was it that I graduated nursing for only 2 years. I had to go to my school and ask for a certificate of graduation with indication of how they credited my other basic subjects from my previous course and somewhat an overview of their program. This was one of the most pain in the neck document that I had to procure since my school really made it extremely difficult for me to get this to the point that I already look so pitiful begging them.

And then another problem I had was that it takes PRC so long to release the Board Certificate (the one that looks like a diploma) and NBV required me to submit that as they were not contented with the certificate of good standing from PRC. So since I was in a hurry to get to the first batch of LaTrobe, I had to find a way to get my Board Certificate expedited. I even took 2 IELTS exam (IDP and British Council) just to make sure ill get all 7 in all subtests in my anticipation that I will still make it to the January opening. Therefore, I have 2 IELTS that passed the Aus requirements. To add insult to injury, I had to redo all my notarized docs and send it again to NBV as they are very strict about how the docs should be notarized which I didn't realize until then.

To my dismay, it was already November then December, but still there was no word from NBV. Nothing! So I accepted the fact that I won't make it to the January classes, and just had hopes to get to the next batch if ever. I wasn't excited anymore and as I was on the verge of losing that ray of light... I emailed once more my evaluator in NBV then to my surprise, she replied right away and asked me "whether it's still true that I still don't have any working experience since my application with NBV somewhere last July." I replied to her query and then she replied back almost instantaneously that she already prepared a draft of the letter for approval which she only needs to have it signed by the registrar and I will be receiving it in a matter of days. I guess I got lucky this once because my evaluator only asked me through a conversational manner about "work experience" and unlike most, she did not require me to send her a statutory declaration or something like an affidavit of explanation regarding work experience.

I got the approval only 1st week of January 2010 and then immediately filed for my application for LaTrobe in hopes that I can make it come June. From what I know, LaTrobe only accepted 25 students last January with 22 Indians, 2 Filipinos and 1 from Japan. So it may very well be a combat for slots. I called up LaTrobe updating my status and the very accommodating Miss told me that usually processing will take 4 weeks before I get a reply from my admission's officer.

Anyhow, right now I'm still on the waiting phase but as I can see that you guys are counting the number of pinoys who you think will be Victoria bound by this year or next. I would just like to share the information that from my knowledge, not including the people in this forum that there are currently 17 applicants myself included for the IRON program. This number is only from one migration agent, I don't have idea about other agencies or self applying individuals. From those 17, 2 of us have already been approved by NBV while I am expecting like around 5 to 6 more to get approved by this Feb or March since they applied around the same time as I did since last July of 2009, while the rest would probably take longer since most of them just applied almost end of last year and start of this year.

With enormous amounts of nurses being produced in our country yearly and with most overseas opportunity shutting their doors for us, it is just wise that we are getting a head start on our application towards Aus while it is still a bit easy to get in without work experience required. The only problem is that nursing basically is more of a continuity of shelling out money that even just to land a job we have to spend an arm and a leg. Aside from this is the emotional dilemma of being separated from our family and alienated from home with the risk of culture shock and further problems on how to budget our pocket money once we are already there. It is a bit comforting to know that their are a number of aspiring Filipinos who are also Aus bound so at least, even if we don't personally know one another, just by virtue of ethnicity then this cultural ties will somewhat make us the best of friends once we are settled there. It is nice that there will be someone that we can relate with and count on.

For those who are 2nd coursers, if you had your BSN for 3 years or more then it won't be much of a problem when you apply with NBV. And I would suggest to read online not just in this forum but continue browsing and go to the website of the Nursing Board of whichever area you choose to apply with. They have plenty of info there which I failed to read before causing some delay with my application. Be prepared with all your documents (Transcript, RLE, NSO, NBI clearance, Certificate of Board Passing, Board Rating, Certificate of Graduation, Basic First Aid Certification, Certificate of Good Standing, Bank Certificate, Course Description, Etc) from the start so you don't get off-tracked once you start your application and I would suggest to have your IELTS ready as well. You can apply even without your IELTS yet however, it would be wise to have your IELTS ready even before you apply as I know of quite a few who are having difficult time passing the writing sub tests of the IELTS. Also if you are Victoria bound, if I am not mistaken, I believe there are about 15 schools who are offering the IRON program so you still have plenty of options. Howbeit, if you want to go to Queensland, you have to wait til after July 2010 when the National Registration has commenced for a new program that they might offer for division 1 nurses.

Also, just some additional info, I know of someone who got lucky that after finishing her part B for CAS in Queensland, she was automatically offered by her employer Permanent Residency so she didn't have to convert her Students Visa to Working Visa. I hope some of us also get this lucky.

Sorry for this long posts. Hope I was able to help also.

Cheers!

P.S. For those who are already taking the IRON program, please update us with the things you're undertaking so that we can come a bit prepared if ever, if not at least we already have a hindsight of what we will be facing once we're there. Thanks.

Haoyin WOW!! thanks for the very detailed info!!! :redpinkhe:yeah:

GOD BLESS US ALL!!!

As for talking to the Dean, I would say forget it. I spent a week going back and forth to Lanting and almost whole day there everyday just so I can get the certificate of explanation for how my previous subjects were credited. They made it really-really difficult for me. You have to approach Sir Munar regarding this matter. And you have to make sure to bring a letter (email) from NBV requesting this from you and then after approval by the Dean, they will be the one to send it to NBV. They will not give you the certificate no matter what you do or how much you beg for it. They will be the one to send it and you have to pay them for the courier service and this will only be done after the said certificate has been duly autographed by the Dean, which may take forever depending on the Dean's availability.

I know that you are talking about the same thing. I also know of 2 people currently asking for the same docs but no luck from Lanting as of yet. The other one already cried to Sir Munar and yet they still refuse to hand out the certificate so that's why her application with the NCQ was delayed and in the end she was only granted Enrolled Nurse (EN), instead of RN. As for why Lanting is like this. Don't ask me why they are making it tough for us when nurses are already having a tough time looking for jobs. They might have their own reasons for not handing out this certificate easily.

Thats the same person I approached and I even asked if anyone else aside for me had approached them to ask for help for NBV. I was hoping someone already had so that I did not need to explain my problem to them. Did you ever have the chance to see your letter? How long did you wait after sending the new documents? Does the whole waiting period begin as if one were a new applicant ?

I was able to see the letter. It was a well written 2 page document with the second page showing all the subjects that were credited from my previous course. It wasn't signed by the Dean when i saw it, and they were the ones who sent it to NBV. You have the option to choose either snail mail or via fedex. I'll just have to stress once again that it is really difficult to ask this from them.

As for the waiting time, yes it did take me a long time before I got news from NBV and I had to call them also for update as to the status of my application. However, it all really depends on how efficient your evaluator is. So it varies. If your evaluator will attend to your application right away then you are lucky and your application will get approved fast. Also, I know that some evaluators don't like to be asked for follow up so you will find that only answering machines will take your calls. Also if you happen to talk to them, they will simply inform you that they already got your documents and to wait for the outcome of their evaluation and that you will get a letter as soon as you're approved. My evaluator told me it could take from a couple of months to a year for applications to get processed as they have numerous influx of applicants.

Makes me kinda afraid of calling them to find out about my application. How does it take a year. I was always under the impression that applications were assessed within 28 business days. Given the backlog, i would say a delay in a 2 weeks or 1 month would be fine but a year. I wish i could email you with regard to other questions as so it wont become public information. I guess you need a couple more post hehe..

True! I was wondering what was taking so long for my application to get approved. I mean it's Australia for crying out loud, not as if our application is being processed here. But still, it took my application from July last year to this January to get approved. And I have a friend who applied the same time as I did and hers isn't approved as of yet. While there was someone who applied after us but got approved a month before mine. So it really varies. And the strict factor for asking further docs would also depend on your evaluator.

I sent you an email I hope you can read it so i can ask you some questions on YM. I have this other friend who has a friend from Lanting also who applied but he is from the June 2006 batch. I hope you get your slot into Latrobe.
