New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Sorry, but I doubt this pathway.... I am here in Melbourne, and have talked with the NBV and my course administrators, they never mentioned this pathway in becoming RN in Australia.

hi farah, are you done with your bridging course? i'm trying to backread as much as i could but then again, i'll take this opportunity to ask you about the bridging visa. I'm a PR, residing in melbourne, and my mum (56yo with 30yrs experience as a nurse) is planning to take the bridging course. she has submitted all the documents to NBV and we already received a letter with the accredit schools for her bridging course.

She's about to take her ielts in a few months in manila while i research for a school for her.. hopefully i could find a not-s0-expensive and accessible school for her. any recommendations? i have looked at ramsay (which is near the city, but they don't offer the course this year) and ETEA which is good i reckon (as they have more sched for the courses, but a bit far from st albans, although i could drive her to and from ETEA if i dont have work). i'll check the other schools as well.

I'm thinking as well if it would still be easy for her to find an employer who's willing to sponsor her knowing she's 55 already but full of experience? Though I reckon 55 is still fit for work here since the retirement age was even pushed to 67. Any thoughts on this?

I've met 2 nurses who underwent a bridging course and they said that there are hospitals who would court you even if you're still doing the course and would offer you sponsorship once your through with the course. It happened to them, but both of them are in their 30's.. One had her bridging course while on a tourist visa and the other on a student visa

Also, my plan of her re-entry here most likely on Jan 2011 (shes been here twice already as a tourist, granted a multiple visa and allowed to study) is by renewing her multiple tourist visa. Arriving here maybe 2 weeks before the start of the course and will be extending her stay (3 mos allowed) to finish her course and hopefully she'll bag a sponsorship.

Thanks heaps :)

Dudzy, I'm due to take the IRCON at ETEA this May 31, 2010 to August 31. My question is, if my bridging program's duration is 3 months, will the embassy give me exactly 3 months to stay for the 456 visa? What if I wanted to go a week earlier to OZ to adjust to the place and what about after the bridging course? Won't I need time to iron things out like look for an employer, paperworks etc? Thank you!

hi imsodizzy, just want to ask about your IRCON at ETEA.. so you have been accepted and you're on a 456 visa? i thought since ETEA is a cricos, you have to have a student visa? I'm planning to enroll my mum at ETEA for the Jan2011 BP, and she will just renew her multiple tourist visa. thanks

from girlfriend:

Chabeli's class started last January 4. We will be going to the city 2 weekends from now. The pinoys are trying to get work at the nursing home during weekends here. but it's a lovely city here in Bendigo--tempting to just live and work here hahahaha but if given the chance, we'd go to melbourne. The school is saying that their clinical placement is most likely part of recruitment already here because they are lacking staff in the hospital.

cool that Deakin's IRON is cricos registered then those who will enroll to it can also get a student visa...

hi chabeli's gf: Isn't it harder to get a student visa than a normal tourist visa since you need to have some sort of "show money" if you opted for the student visa? Whereas for tourist visa, you don't really have to have some "show money" as proof of source of funds? My mum might be doing her BP in Jan2011 and i'm planning to just renew her multiple tourist visa (I'm a PR residing in Melby and she's been here twice before on a multilpy tourist visa.. July-Oct2008 & Apr-July 2009).

Though student visa allows you to work.. but I'm more after the money that you need to have in bank just to be able to study here. As for my mum's case, she'll be staying with me, so no need to worry on everything except for the course fee. Thanks

my 2 :twocents: worth: I think ETEA'S IRCON is CRICOS so your mom cannot use her tourist visa, she has to get a student visa. :) good luck to your mon, jjeetthh...my sister-in-law is a PR in melbourne also...they reside in Dandenong... :) I was there last May with my wife...I love Melbourne!;):up::up: I am hoping to get favorable NBV letter, too and take my bridging course there...

Specializes in ER,med surg, nursing home.

Thank you NewMac. Will have to call them soon to inquire bout my status and how long the average processing time nowadays...Used to be a month, but some say now it takes three months? Oh well ... hoping for the best. Thaank you once again

hi drenag.. i had a look at cricos website and search for ETEA using cricos provider code: 02925E.. no match for IRCON was found..

I also looked at the course sched in Victoria and it does not state that

INITIAL REGISTRATION COURSE FOR OVERSEAS NURSES 2010 is a CRICOS code.. unlike some course wherein it's stated that it is a CRICOS CODE

like this one..

Only 3 institutions are offering the BP program which are register under CRICOS

1. La Trobe University - Initial Registration for Overseas Nurses

2. University of Ballarat (UB) - Return to Practice Division 1 and Initial Registration for Overseas Nurses in Division 1 &

- Return to Practice Division 1 and Initial Registration for Overseas Nurses in Division 1 (AAoN)

3. Deakin University - Return to Practice and Initial Registration (Overseas Nurses)

i'm not sure if the sites (ETEA & CRICOS) were up-to-date. but i'm pretty much sure they are as it is stated in ETEA that it's for 2010.. can anyone with experience on this please confirm? thanks

maybe because it's a new program for them to offer :p

ryan said etea is cricos. anyway ill give them a call to make sure. :)

i did check cricos website though to check whether etea's nursing bp is under them or not, and yes their BP is not the list. I hope it's because the site is not updated :p

to newmac :

Yes, the electronic cert of enrollment will be given by the school after you paid your course fee. it needs to be full payment. pls make sure you have at least 2 months to process your student visa because it's also taking too long... as soon as you have your letter of offer, pay right away (fastest is through credit card) then they will email your eCOE within the day then , pass your student visa application right away...

the australian embassy in manila is processing an average of 100 student visas everyday from the whole philippines, and it is a first come first serve basis...so even if your classes start ahead of the others, they will still follow the application lodgement date.

@ chabeli: Just a follow up to NewMac's query - Do you have an idea how much is the ideal financial requirements to be indicated when applying for a student visa? Do applicants of student visas under the CRICOS Non-Award Sector (Subclass 575 - Assessment Level 2) need to present a sum equivalent to AUD$18,000 even if the bridging course is approximately 3 months only? Are they strict with that? I surmise, this was also the type of visa granted to you, wasn't it?

With regards to the student visa itself, have you been given certain restrictions in your visa like a "No Further Stay" stamp? Do you have an idea what is the implication of this condition if one's student visa has this imprint, say, conversion of this visa with this marking to a work visa (457) or a PR is concerned? And lastly, is the "No Further Stay" condition rarely or usually given to Subclass 575 - Assessment Level 2 student visa holders? Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm still learning the ropes of this whole process, hopefully with your help. I also welcome everybody's take on this. Thanks a heap in advance! :)

Hi NewMac, hmmmm.. what if our assumptions that yeah, it's just a new program (and not up-to-date) and same with the CRICOS site (not updated as well) are right, is there an institution that offers the BP which is not CRICOS? Getting a student visa is the last option for my mum as a lot of work needs to be done, including the financial aspect, whereas is on a tourist visa, she will just renew her expired multiple entry. Any thoughts? Thanks.

@ jeetthh:

chabeli has 2 classmates that are on their 50's. they are australian nurses who did not practice for quite some time so they had to go through bp to get their license again from the nbv. don't worry about your mum bec she is highly qualified. the govt is even encouraging the older nurses to return to practice and they are given an incentive if they do.

one of the filipinos is just using tourist visa here in la trobe. she has 1 year multiple entry so she just used it. the school won't really ask about what visa you used. it's just kinda strict in the philippines. for etea, last june 2009, i know they were still not cricos registered so i doubt if they are still cricos registered. one of the reasons chabeli did not enroll in etea was because he would not be processed for a student visa then and we needed a student visa because i was going with him and i need a work permit.

newmac and jjeethh and reiken:

the finacial requirement of 18,000 aud is for 1 year so you can prorate it if your course is just 3 months. that means divide 18k by 4 then that's about what you need to show.

jeeth, try downloading the student visa app form so you can see what info they will ask. you can just make a statutory declaration that your mom's accomodation and daily expenses will be taken cared by you.

but if she can just renew her multiple entry visitor visa, that shouldn't be a prob bec anyway, it allows up to 3 months of study :)

@ reiken :

by the way, our visa does not have the "NO FURTHER STAY" label :) and yet it is 575

but still try for the tourist visa bec i think you still can.

thanks chabeli, that's good to hear. now im torn between renewing her tourist or getting a student visa coz my dad normally tags along. so instead of him being bored, he can go get a job.. he's a chemist working in a power plant and the desalination plant in victoria sounds interesting..

but then again, i need to check all the paperworks that has to be done, esp the financial aspect of it.. thanks chabeli & gf :)

if you're in the city, let me know if you guys want to meet up :) thanks
