New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi Cioman 94,

It is good to know we are from one place. Have you started your application with QNC? Many are enticed to register with QNC because it has been written in this forum that QNC does not require experience. Secondly, it is the only council that allows challenge test to be taken in the Philippines. Thirdly, distance learning is allowed under QNC. Fourthly, QNC has urban places as like Gold Coast while Perth(NMBWA) is quite far from Sydney. I was once in the same position. I did plan to apply at QNC but did not push thru and shelved the idea because of the cost.

With regards to the challenge test, some would say it is quite easy but others would say it's difficult. I think the test are more geared in psychosocial in nature. Just pray that you will be able to obtain a postive assessment.

In case you will need help, just send a message and I'll try my best to be of help.

Good luck and God bless.

Bridging Program for Hollywood Private hospital require you to have at least 1 year hospital experience. For WA Department of health, you have to have at least have 2 years bed side experience before they will allow accept you for a bridging course. I'm not sure with curtin university of technology, though.

NMBWA requires one to have experience, although it is much cheaper. However, for newly grads, you can try QLD, VIC or NSW. In NSW though, you need your degree to be similar to an Australian degree and we all know that only a few Universities in the Philippines are considered at par. VIC's bridging program is way expensive. That is why those without experience opt for QLD as it will now be the cheapest one. But also keep in mind that they can change their requirements any time.

The difficulty of the CAS program is really subjective. It can be hard for some but easy for the others. Not only should you worry about the difficulty of the CAS program but the aftermath. What will happen to you after your registration, should you be successful in the bridging program? Most employers do require at least 1 year experience for overseas nurses. The only reason I can think of is mainly because why would they hire inexperienced overseas nurses when they have so many newly graduates each year. That is also one reason why some go for the agencies even if in reality you'll be paying so so so much more; because as promised by agencies, they will HELP you find an employer. Still there is no assurance. I just hope that the agencies will really find you a real nursing job not a home care job in the end.

So in the end, it all comes back to whether experience will be important or not after your registration. But I am hoping everyone will be able to go thru the process successfully and be able to find a good employer so we'll all see each other in Australia later on. ;) I'll try and research some more. and I'll update you with whatever I can find.

I got info from Curtin University of Technology. Intakes would be twice a year. The next intake would be February next year. Bridging Course with them is 6 months (1 semester) and the cost is at least $Au 11,000. Nursemavi please update us with your application with Hollywood Private Hospital. Thanks everyone and good luck to all of us

hi everyone, it's my first time to post here. can you believe i read the thread from page 1. hehe

anyway, i already submitted my documents for assessment with the qld nursing council. i'm still waiting for their response. i am anxious coz it's been 2 months now, though they already acknowledged that they got my application.

i also took my ielts already and got a band score of 8 with grades no lower than 7.5.

now, i'm having second thoughts if i will continue with my application and choose the challenege test (if given) or attend a 3yr bachelor course in queensland (hopefully shortened to two years after subject credits).

to people who are saying about a 2yr pre registration course, what universities are those and the location of the schools. preferably in brisbane and gold coast.

thank you and best regards.

@ thinkerbel: Thank you. :) Happy to help whenever I can.

@ cooldread: There are Universities that offer a graduate entry which is 2 years in duration only. It is also a recognized pre-registration program by QNC. One popular choice is Queensland University of Technology. Other choices are Griffith University, University of Queensland and Australian Catholic University. All of which offer a normal BN program wherein you can apply for credit for your previous BSN. The duration of the program can be shortened by a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 2 years. Both ACU and QUT are in Brisbane. UQ's Nursing campus is in Ipswich which is an hour away from Brisbane. While Griffith University has campuses both on Brisbane and Gold Coast. Also, Griffith University and University of Queensland offer a 1 year program for overseas registered nurses.

Should you need further information on other Universities outside Brisbane and Gold Coast or specifically outside Queensland, just tell me.

Aelith, thank you for the prompt reply. I'm interested with Griffith University, preferably in their Gold Coast campus. Could you give me more info regarding their BN program and how i can apply for credit from my BSN course. Thank you.

I emailed Griffith asking them about the 1 year program. and this is what they told me...

Thank you for your enquiry to Griffith University. For information and

entry requirements regarding the Bachelor of Nursing - Post-Registration -

Nathan, program, please visit this website:

http://www17.griffith.edu.au/cis/p_cat/admission.asp?ProgCode=1163&type=overview

This program is a 1 year program, however it does NOT lead to

registration with the Queensland Nursing Council.

I don't know about the grad entry though :yeah:

cooldread... when do u plan to study?

The 1 year program that the above has asked is a post-registration program. A post-registration program will definitely not lead to registration because it is for those who are already registered and need to upgrade their qualifications to a degree.

However, Griffith has many strands for the Bachelor of Nursing (pre-registration). One of which is the Overseas Registered Nurses Strand which is for 1 year only. All the strands will make you eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Queensland Nursing Council.

You can learn more about their strands here: http://www17.griffith.edu.au/cis/p_cat/require.asp?ProgCode=1162&Type=structure#overseas

You can browse through the requirements and program overview using the links on the left side of the page.

Applying for credits is done by filling out their "application for credits" form. You need to submit this to your previous University and have them prepare the necessary documents. You then submit that to the University in Australia after it has been completed. Some Universities grant credits upon application while some only grant credits after enrollment.

If there's anything else you need, tell me ;)

hey xysy25, thank you for the link. with regards to your post, i think it's a continual form of education.. post registration, meaning they have a prerequisite of a nursing license in qld... am i right? hehe

anyway, i'm still weighing my options coz i haven't received my registration status.

hopefully i can start education by july 2009 if ever i decide to study. hehe

hello, would you be kind enaf to post and inform us later upon receiving your "assessment approval/result".. it will greatly help a lot if you do as it would give us an idea of the waiting/processing time of QNC nowadays..

also, could you pls help me understand something about the QNC application:

  • When do you send your IELTS result to the QNC? together with the application? requesting IELTS to send results directly to QNC? or should you first wait for the result of the assessment and wait for further instruction then?
  • NBI Clearance is not required to be sent with the application??

Thank you. Hope you could clarify.

hey cioman94.

i would update you once i got my registration result from qld.

regarding IELTS, i think you have to wait for qnc to tell you to take your ielts.

i took my ielts coz it was for another purpose, not for my qnc registration. but i still can use my ielts result because it's under the academic category.

i don't think that nbi clearance is a requirement for assessment. kindly check the qnc website for the required documents that you need to submit. just make sure that the documents are certified true copies (not originals) and properly notarized.
