New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

OK, ppl here comes another one. I recently graduated (Associate Degree) from USA. As you may already know this, in USA you can practice as a RN after your Associate degree, of course after taking the board which i have taken by the way. My question is how does my RN status from USA transforms into Australian health care system, since i am planning to work in Australia. Looking forward to hear from you ;)

Hello Aelith and to all pioneer and new members of this long-running hyperactive thread..

As answered by Aelith, yes, your US RN license will be recognize in Australia mainly because you are educated as a nurse in the US... Unlike most of us Filipino nurses who are educated in the Philippines, our US RN license will not be recognize in Australia (which I know everybody would agree with this fact based on the experiences of many thread members here)..

So for others (and their friends) who have plans of taking the NCLEX, better think twice, the money might be better spent for Australia nursing license processing.. We have a lot of thread members who are US RN but have to go through the bridging program in Australia because said US license is not recognize considering that they graduated from a Philippine school..

Hope that settles the matter.. Best regards..

by the way, Aelith...i have a question...

If in case i get the license from NBV to work as a nurse, how long is it's eligibility? and will it still be recognized even by July 2010 when they will transition to national accreditation?

1) As answered by Aelith, the nursing license is renewable yearly.

2) Per proposal of that National Registration/Accreditation:

Example if your granted a license this year and which will expire Sept 30, 2010, you will be allowed to practice

as a nurse even after July 2010 (with the new national registration) until Sept 30 2010 expiry of your license.

You will have to renew your license prior expiry Sept 30 2010 based on the new policies..

3) One of the new policies/requirements after July 2010 in renewing your license is that you must have completed

the required number of hours/units of CPE (Continuing Professional Education ??)..

Therefore, even before July 2010, you must know what are the recognized CPE and other requirements that

are needed in renewing your license, otherwise you might be cramming in complying for the requirements in the

license renewal..

For convenience, the appropriate new nursing board must release as early as possible before July 2010 the requirements needed in renewing the licenses so that the nurses will be informed and cramming would be prevented..

Anyway, down the road, I hope our brother sister nurses who are already in Australia (like Branyan, Nurzmavi) would help us in understanding the matter of nationa registration..

Everything you might need will be in the following link:

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the quick reply Aelith, It's a great help. all the best to you God bless you.

THanks, Cioman...

i emailed NBV last week and they said i should receive my assessment before july 12,...if all else is good about my papers, which means they will ask me to enroll in a bridge course, I am planning to take the january 2010 intake in Deakin University. so that's already 2010 and then I should get my license sometime in April 2010. (which is only about less than 3 months before July).

My dilemna is i might have to go through another process of registration and spend as much... especially considering that the NBV resigned from ANMC and then the ANMC will be the body for natl registgration.

thanks aelith and 4vida for the replies. i"m in here in the philippines, i'll do ur suggestion on monday. thanks again.

hi patuman01, i had the same fate with ielts. what i did was to try OET, fortunately i was able to get B in all subtests. the writing part is much easier than ielts because you just have to write a referral letter. just wanna share.. good luck!!!

that's good although OET is a lot more expensive than IELTS...it is around 27k.

hi 4vida, sorry for the late reply... i had a problem with my dsl, as usual. OET is really expensive but for me, its worth it coz i was getting depressed with my IELTS results. It's just an online application. i filled up the form, uploaded my photo with the required size and paid them with my credit card. then they sent me the receipt via e-mail, after a couple of weeks they informed me the time and place of the exam. hope this helps..

hi chabeli, can i ask if you are in the philippines? if so, what visa are you planning to apply? Coz i'm also planning to enroll in deakin uni if i get my decision from NBV before september. thanks...

Thanks hungrybird for the reply and the infos, but one thing more you forget to mention "the venue" of the exam. Can I do it here in the Philippines? It would be great if you let me know soon. Good luck to you and God Bless you.

Hi! chabeli, thanks for the further information about OET. But if it's worth to spend why not..hahaha I'm quite fed up with my results. I also develop a trauma in sitting again with ielts. I cannot concentrate anymore.:D And OET they have a good deal with the examinee right?

One question, if you don't mind my asking..Is it posible to enroll in deakin uni. even without english result? of course after the assessment? Just wondering hehehe

Hi 4vida, thanks for asking that. I am also in same situation with you, trying to weigh things if OET is better. hi hi hi. I hope it won't be too expensive for us. Thanks.

Hi there! The venue would be IDP Australia. I also researchd about that coz about a few days before my IELTS result came I was really anxoius about my scores, thinking that I would do the OET if ever I fail the IELTS. Thank God I passed! But anyway, yeah the venue would be IDP Australia, Pinoeer Bldg. (or is it Pioneer House?) in Makati along Paseo de Roxas. I personally asked someone there at their counter. They say that they hold the exams but you'll have to register online yourself. And if I'm not mistaken, the next schedule would be August 8 :D.
