Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
actually, what i'd like to know is if there is anyone out there who fulfills the following characterisitcs:1. is a filipino and a philippine-educated nurse, with or without work experience.
2. who took the qld competency assessment and went through the process, and passed, and is blessed enough to acquire a qld rn license.
3. has acquired a 457 visa (not a family-sponsored visa or whatever). as in he should have started from scratch, like most of the people in this forum. but he has now reached the other end of the line, and he has finished while most of us are onyl starting.
4. (probably most important of all because this is the reason why we are going through this process in the first place) was able to find a hospital sponsor, has already started a paying and stable rn job in australia.
i realize that (as far as this thread is concerned) all of us are focusing on how to get assessed in queensland, what documents to submit, how to pass the qld exams, and how to get a qld rn license. but we also fail to ask questions regarding the employment situation for nurses in queensland.
i really did learn some lessons regarding the nclex. i went through the whole process, i passed it, and guess what, i am still here in the philippines! (like thousands of others who used to have the luxury of optimism, but are now fermenting in frustration here in the philippines).
i have also received several pms from several people (some of whom are even in the us already) who have passed the nclex and already have their us rn licenses, and they still have trouble finding a job there. people always say that there is a global nursing shortage, but why is it that there are some who have trouble finding stable jobs? both in australia and in the us, why is it that people who followed the prescribed recipe end up with a different and less tasty dish?
i don't mean to dampen anyone's optimism here, i don't want to be the raincloud in a thread that obviously bubbles with optimism and excitement for a brighter future in the sun-kissed lands of australia (australian dreams or whatever), but i really want a reality check. i want to look at the real picture, not just bright promises that will only end up as promises.
i think someone with the four characterisitics named above should share his stories and experiences with the rest of us in this forum. please be honest and enlighten us what is probably in store for us. i believe that only someone who went through the same predicaments that we are going through could really help us and inform us and teach us.
are you out there?

the first overseas educated nurse to pass the cas program in bundaberg is from the philippines.
http://uninews.cqu.edu.au/uninews/viewstory.do?story=5677
his name is owen arriola, he is a registered physician from the philippines as well as a registered nurse, he took the cas clinicals last november and passed last december.
it all worth knowing his trail to undertake this program for those nurses who are still awaiting registration or will still do the cas program.
the filipino society in queensland is very proud of him and he should be an inspiration for philippine nurses undergoing the same program.
MR KOWALSKA: It's me again. Your posts are very helpful and informative. Thank you very much. But I do have several questions more.1. After passing the Part B, how long will it take before I get my QLD License so I can look for an RN job? If I get my QLD license, can I start working using a 456 visa while waiting for my 457 visa to push through, or do I have to wait for the 457, either in Australia or in the Philippines?
2. Do you have your QLD license already? Where do you work, if it's okay for me to ask. Just interested. Was wondering if you had a hard time looking for an employer who will sponsor you. Or you are Australian so you do not need any sponsor? Are you Filipino?
3. From start (lodging of QNC application) to finish (getting an RN job in Queensland and working), how long did the whole process take you? Also, how many months did you have to wait for QLD's assessment before you were able to take the Part A exam?
I think that would be all for now. AGain, thanks for all you info. You have been very very helpful to all of us...

I will answer selectively some of your question. Obviously this is not a good forum to answer personal questions like what is my nationality, what hospital do I work, You must consider anybody from anywhere monitors this forum and for the sake of prudence I will withhold answering some of your questions.
From the time I passed my clinicals, it took me two weeks before I got my registration.
When your employer lodged a sponsorship for you -If you are onshore (that means you lodged within Australia) you will be given an interim permit until your 457 has been finalized. Once your interim permit is labeled - as it was on my case - I started working immediately for my employer - until 457 comes out.
This is a totally different scenario if you came back to the Philippines - obviously you have to wait until your 457 comes out. I would agree that there will always be an exception for every case.
My QNC assessment took about 2 months.

thanks branyan. i just want to make sure that i understand everything so i can make the right decisions regarding my australia application and my present job. i do not want to resign from my present job until everything is "plantsado" as we call in the philippines ("ironed out" in english?)have you already found a job in australia and started working?
hi phoenix_rising
anyway, i am still waiting for my qnc assessment hehehe, thinking too much into the future. need to pass the part a first!
that's the right thing to do, don't quit on your present job yet, you can always file a leave of absence from your work if you need to do something personally like the challenge test or placement, at present, it's difficult to know how long it will take you to finish cas and get a job as there's an increase in influx of expectant qld applicants/registrants. waiting is much more difficult if you don't have work or something to make yourself busy.
yes, i was able to get a job, my employer already nominated me for a position and sponsorship which is already approved, i'm waiting now for my 457 approval.

gosh, sir branyan are you dr. owen arriola? you make me very proud, and you make us all very proud for making the number one pinoy to passed in bundaberg. i am very happy, i look at friendster, can i invite you as friend? i admire you so much, i hope one day i will go to australia also but right now i have very little knowledge. thank you for inspiring me so much.
god bless you doc, may you help us here.:clpty:
Yes, my colleague got a 456 Short Stay Visa, multiple entry valid for one year. She will be doing the CAS program. Another colleague got also a 456 Short Stay Visa, multiple entry valid for one year and will be doing the Bridging program at College of Nursing in Burwood Sydney.Mr. Kowalska
Hi. Your colleagues who got the 456 visa, are they from the Philippines? Thanks!
Yes, they were from the Philippines. They made independent applications. I rang the Immigration about having 676 and 456 for nurses doing the briding program. From what they told me, both can be utilized for bridging program so long it is less than three months. They said that they cannot grant you a 456 Visa if you filed for a 676 and vice-versa. They will label you the Visa based on the type of application you supplied with them.

hi branyan, just wanna ask when did you lodge your 457 application? i just wanna have an idea of how long it takes to obtain your 457 visa... thanks and good luck..
I am sorry for not being as optimistic as most of the people in this forum. It's just that I don't want to be disappointed anymore. With the hope, energy, and money that I am investing in Australia, I really can't afford to be disappointed anymore (financially, probably even emotionally!).So please, any Filipino-educated nurse out there who went through the Wall and managed to survive AND get an RN job in Australia, please step up and share your experiences.
You have a legitimate concern... I too was a bit frustrated when new zealand shut off the 2nd corsers like me.. But Australia has given me and others another opportunity, in fact a better opportunity than NZ.. Nways, i hope your concerns were answered by the other members of this thread.. If you would have a chance to read all the pages of this thread (which is a big task..) you would understand the enthusiasm of the members and the actual employment-hiring experiences of certain members like Branyan, and of course Nurse_Mavi... they all inspire us to go through this path.. Nways, if you have queries, members here are more willing to address your questions..
good luck..

hi, phoenix_rising! i understand your predicament. and i'm sure behind everyone's optimism here lurks a tinge of a feeling that is akin to yours. that is so natural. i even think it's healthy as it keeps you somewhat grounded and in check. as for the qualities abovementioned, as far as i know i think branyan would be the best example. he is filipino, graduated from a philippine nursing school, underwent cas, is now a registered nurse in qld, and has now a job waiting for him in oz. the hospital that sponsored him was the same hospital where he took his clinicals for a month. hope this small info helps. good luck to us all!:wink2:
