Negativity in Vegas nursing?

Published

I was just wandering if those of you who work in the Las Vegas hospitals experience the same problems as those who post on the other forums.

I worked in 4 different hospitals in Las Vegas last year, and ALL of them had a negative attitutude. I think this is because Nevada ranks lowest in the nation for nurse/ pt ratio, so there is a huge turn over in staff. Nurses were constantly resigning and going elsewhere. Morale was terrible. The whole city of Las Vegas was in flux, it's a party town, not condusive to a place where you'd call home or want to retire in.

That's discouraging - I visited there (got married) and thought it would be a nice place to move to...since maybe there would be JOBS (versus Oregon)

I cant imagine partying all the time, it was certainly fun when I was there, but I have to admit I think living there would be a little different... (I never have lived in a large city - except NY when I was young so it would take some adjusting)

so - living in a city that parties all night and never sleeps - well...come to think of it, it sounds a little bit like my neighbors above me...guess it wouldnt be too different...

I grew up here and have worked in the casinos and now I want to get into nursing. Actually, there are a lot of interesting things to do here outside of the strip night life. We have a manmade lake, the Grand Canyon is only a few hours drive, Zion national park in Utah is only a 2 hour drive. We have desert outback roads to explore where you can find real ghost towns and beautiful desert landscape. The shines about 90% of the time.:D

Yeah, the strip is not what Vegas is ALL about. I really have a love hate relationship with the place.

But...I am thankful for how cheap it is to live here, There are very few places where you can have this type of life. Plus, ppl really don't party all the time, it's not a party town to the ppl who live here, not at all. The strip is there if you want to have dinner, see a show, etc, but it's not something ppl go to every weekend.

I'll miss this place when I move, I'll miss the sunsets over the Spring Mts the most!

Honestly, if you don't live here for an extended period of time, you have no idea what it's like!

Hello,

My partner and I want to relocate to Nevada in 2004. I'm a crna and am hoping to find some Nevada crna's to network with. Vegas is not our first pick, but it seems there aren't many crna positions in other areas of the state. If anyone has information regarding this, I'd appreciate your input. Happy holidays and thanks! :)

There is some negativity here.

Partly due to the tremendous NEED for more nurses.

Partly due to high patient/nurse ratios in some areas of nursing.

Partly as many of us are such indebted middle class that we probably are working too much overtime to make ends meet, so we are really never well rested.

Partly as many of us have no family in town (most of us are "transplants") so we have limited "support systems" to help with the stress.

BUT, I really like it here!

We are close enough to California and Utah for "weekend trips"...but we don't have to LIVE there! LOL!

We have a HUGE lake, gorgeous mountains nearby, meaning boating, water skiining, snowboarding, skiiing, hiking, camping are all nearby.

We have the University and the Community College, if we want to get some "book learning", we have several art galleries, a symphony, and a ballet company, if we want some "culture".

We have resturants ranging from $5 buffets to unique gourmet rooms with pricelss meals!

We have five star hotels...and our very own 'skid row'.

Realistically, you can choose to have a wonderful life here, if you want to.

Nursing is hard work, requiring dedication and knowledge.

You can find rewarding work here.

I find the post to be informative and interesting. I think there is a certain degree of negativity in our field everywhere. Nursing is changing, just like other careers. We nurses want to be considered professionals, but we often do not handle ourselves in a professional manner.

I attempted to call the board today, they were busy, so I will attempt to call again tomorrow.

It is good to hear that there are jobs, here in WV, the jobs are not as plentiful and pay is lousy.

If anyone would give me some info on what hospitals to check on I would appreciate it. Is HCA big there? I am NOT interested in working for them, so please no HCA promoters.

Also, any info on base pay rates would be appreciated.

THERE IS NEGATIVITY EVERYWHERE.........HERE IN CA THE RATIO IS 18 TO 1 CNA AND EVEN 22 THE PAY IS BETWN 6.75-10.00 SOOO IS THAT BAD OR WHAT

WELL BEING FROM CA AN LOOKING FORWARD TO MOVE TO LV :p I THINK THERE ARE BAD THINGS IN NURSING EVERYWHERE. BEING A CNA I HAVE DONE SENIOR HOMES,AGENCY,HOSPITAL AND PRIVATES AND THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING NOT RIGHT OR EVEN FAIR ABOT THE PAY,AND THE CONSIDERATION TO USSS:crying2:

THE ONLY THING THAT HAS KEPT ME GOING IS THAT ONE DAY I MIGHT BE THAT PT AND WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO TREAT ME WELL WHILE IAM SICK!!! I HOPE:balloons:

HERE IN CA THEY WILL PUT U IN A WHOLE WING SIDE JUST BECUZ THE OTHER CNAS DID NT SHOW UP AND THEY DONT EVEN CARE IF U CAN PULL THE SHOW !!! BUT ALL I DID WAS MY BEST THAT I CAN BEEE:)

AND GO HOME KNOWING THT I DID SOMETHING GOOD FOR MY SELF WHICH WAS NOTTO TAKE IT PERSONAL AND HATE ALL MY SUPERVISORS!!!

WHEREEVER U WORK AND WHATEVERY STATE IT IS JUST DO UR BEST AND BE CONTENT U HAVE DONE UR JOB TO UR BEST OF ABILITIES:)

I'll miss the sunsets over the Spring Mts the most!

The sunsets and sunrises ARE beautiful over the mountains!

Glad you noticed!

Las Vegas is cool

I love Las Vegas. I live in an area that is residential, but close to everything I could want. Last year, I left a job when my temp. license expired and was glad to have an excuse to leave. The nurse pt ratio was really bad. I recently started a job at a hospital I'm pretty sure I'm going to love. They very much stress that they are a community hospital and are a family. I've been very pleased with what I've seen. They seem to work hard to hire people that have a good attitude and understand the importance of team work. Unhappy nurses are not good public relations for repeat business, and the bottom line is still $. I've only been to the Strip 3 times in 2 years, and 2 of those were with out-of-town relatives, so I'm out of the party loop. I cash my checks at a "local's" casinos for a free pull and that's the extent of casino life for me.
