Nurses General Nursing

As nurses why do you guys think that medications only treat the symptoms of a disease instead of curing the disease? Is it because no one has come up any cures yet? () Or do you guys think it's a conspiracy?

I for one think it's a conspiracy and that's what I'm writing a paper on. Just wanted to know how you all felt. Thanks.

Side note: OMG just noticed I put "and" instead of "an" in my title. Disregard Please!

Big Pharma.....It is a conspiracy of greed and big profits.

It is not about really about helping people.

It just can't be good for people to be taking 20-30 meds a day. I saw this all the time as a home health nurse, half of my initial visit time was spent just recording an accurate med list.

Penicillin was a great discovery, but it now pretty powerless against many bacteria.

Why are prescription medications allowed to be advertised on television, as a huge expense that is passed down in the cost of the drugs? It must pay off some how.

Here are two interesting articles to read about the drug industry.

Well, a conspiracy... you may say so. For me it's like take a look at other countries (many sites in English on the net). For example, I have ulcerative colitis, noncurable per most of the GIs I have seen in the states, and I will always be on meds. When I went home to Germany, the first question was on my stress level, then on my diet. In Europe, many countries consider ulcerative colitis a disability and many patients are placed on bedrest when they become acute as it seems to be linked to increased stress level. In Germany, patient may go to a rehab/spa like facility, where they learn stress management techniques and dietary changes that may influence this disease. The healthcare management is mainly preventive, so that people do not get as sick and do not need to use meds. My brother has the same disease, actually, he went to the hospital with bloody diarrhea, weighing 98 pounds (he is 6 feet) and was immediately placed in the ICU. When I saw him about a year after this flareup, he was completely off meds and was doing very well, just did a lot of exercise and stress management. He did not even change much of his diet. What I'm trying to say is that, in the US, meds are an extremely lucrative business (same meds cost in other countries 1/3), and thus, manipulation of the healthcare industry to adopt a high med/low preventative approach is quite likely.

And you know what? Most of these drugs have worse side effects than the disease.

Sometimes they do, and sometimes the option available does not even make it worth forgoing the medications.Just depends.

Sorry, I have a hard time accepting an article where someone who's only qualifications are "Expert on homeopathic medicine" tells people to take a holiday from their medications, as they may become addicted to them. ***** What if someone post transplant reads that and decides to stop their anti-rejection meds to "give [their] body an opportunity to manifest its everyday self-regulating and self-healing propensities without the crutch of a pharmaceutical agent inhibiting or suppressing its important work." Who the heck is he to tell anyone who reads his column that they should take a vacation from their pharmaceuticals to "learn whether [they] really need to continue taking this drug or not." Please, patients, leave that up to discussion between you and your doctor and a pharmacist.

This is one of the biggest crocks I've read. I agree that some people are on too many medications, but that does not mean they should just stop taking them all.

I read the WHOLE thing (burp!)

Post 71 and 106 make sense to me. I don't think there is a conspiracy. That would take people actively making decisions to make things worse. I think they ignore the non money making ideas and favor things like pills that have a record of being very profitable and controllable.

People are so used to taking pills, researching surgeries, that new ideas that need to be proven and marketed would be second choice to a savvy investor. Look at acupuncture...not being controlled by one entity means no big company to promote it with research and ads. No hype to increase popularity means insurance may not cover it, where they WILL cover meds.

Even worse, who is around to promote vegetable gardens, sunlight and fresh air? And the use of those health promoting items is declining by the day. It's not a conspiracy, it's just that no one has figured out a way to make money off it.

Just try hospitalizing someone for enforced bedrest in the USA. The insurance companies won't go for it. It would be interesting for the OP to use this example and compare relapse rates in Germany vrs the USA.

I agree with you Ebony...I know what you're attempting to get across but I'm not articulate enough to write it out. In this country, business first, people second.

I just think of the wealthy and powerful like cockroaches. For every one that you see there are at least 9 bigger, nastier ones that you can't see.

So you are saying that anyone who has wealth or power is akin to a cockroach? Regardless of what they do with it?

The love of money is the root of all evil and people will do ANYTHING for it.

Yes, it's the love of money, not the mere possessing of if, that corrupts. And you don't have to be wealthy to love money. If you know the store clerk gave you too much change and you keep it, you have done a corrupt thing. It's just that you've done it on a smaller scale, and it won't likely end up in the paper.

Conversely, many wealthy folks give generously of their funds, endowing foundations and supporting all kinds of charities and good causes. I'm sure a few do it to polish their image, but a lot of them do it behind the scenes for the good of the recipients and because such things matter to them.

The wealthy and the rest of us are pretty much the same under the skin. The main difference is the proportions and the attention the actions receive.

So you are saying a US doctor will omit advice about diet and stress reduction in diseases that are exacerbated by stress or improper diet because he only wants to use prescription drugs? I think you should change doctors if that was the case because you happened to get a very poor sampling of US doctors. Your impressions are not accurate. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most physicians here go to lifestyle advice before prescribing drugs. A small fraction of people actually take that advice, though.

SHHHHHHhhhhhh!

It has nothing to do with Big Pharma

The cure is simple
