I am moving to CA from TX and I would like to get my certification in Public Health Nursing. I have been trying to call the CaBON for several days and I keep getting that the lines are too busy to take my call! I have a BSN, but I understand that I need a 7 hour CA child abuse recognition and prevention course. I am trying to find a course that fits that requirement online, but after hours of searching I am coming up empty handed. I would prefer to have an online course, but if I have to travel to CA to take it I can manage. Anyone know of courses out there? Thanks in advance... :)

The 7 hour abuse course is part of the BSN curriculum here. I remember we took it in class and got a certificate. Not sure how else one would go about getting it?

SJSU has a public health certificate component to their BSN program. You might want to call their nursing department to inquire.

Your BSN may have included these hours as part of their curriculum...it's kind of "sneaky" and doesn't feel necessarily that you are settling in for some hours of a course. I would contact the school from whom you received your degree and see if it was included. If it was, you get the paperwork from the BRN's website and pay the fee ($75) and make sure they (BRN) receive a transcript from your school and you should be good to go! Best of luck!

If you want to acquire a Certificate as a Public Health Nurse in California, Contact Western Schools.com or 1-800 438-8888. When I got my certificate, the requirements was 30 hours in Child Abuse.

I am beginning the Public Health Nursing Certificate process with the Ca BRN. Did you get your 7 hour CA child abuse recognition and prevention course? Did you like it?
I found this one: Stop Child Abuse that I am thinking of doing. It is only $77.00
Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.

For those of you who took the child abuse course through Zur Institute or the Stop Child Abuse course listed above my comment for $77, did the CA State Board of Nursing approve those courses? I tried calling them yesterday, but the line was busy. The last thing that I want to do is spend my money on a course that the CA BRN does not approve. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi, I realize the last comment was from several months ago, but I have the same questions regarding the Zur Institute and Stop Child Abuse courses- did the CA BRN accept these for the 7 hour child abuse course for those who went to school out of state but have a CA RN license? Thanks!

I know this posting is a couple years old, but were you able to obtain your PHN certificate in California? I am looking into getting my BSN through UTA, but I will still need my PHN in California for my job requirements. I am hoping that I can complete the PHN part separate from my BSN. Thank you.
