I would say that I was very autonomous when I worked as a School Nurse. You are the only licensed medical person in the school building so the principal, teachers, and students look to you for medical advice. Sure, you can always call a co-worker or the nurse supervisor for help, but you are the only one that is able to visualize what is going on.

African American Hair Problems in Nursing
I say get your box braids. Like one person stated, what's going to stop them from judging your style once you get them? I don't personally see anything wrong with box braids. I just had an interview today and I have a TWA (tiny fro). I don't focus entirely on my hair, but instead I make sure my overall look is professional. You should not be ashamed of the hair that grows out of your head, and it's unfair for others to judge you based upon your natural self. I hope we all in 2015 can embrace our true selves and not be ashamed to be who we were created to be.

Expanding job hunt to other States
I would have to add that if you want to be licensed in the state of California, it's best to allow several weeks for the board to process your paperwork. I learned this through my own personal experience, lol!

Attention Travel School Nurses!
Hello, all you school nurses out there! :) Before graduating from nursing school, I always wanted to be a travel nurse. Once I got my feet wet in the hospital, I decided that I wanted to try something different that offered a different setting and work pace, so I became a school nurse. I figured by this point, I would never get to travel, since I was no longer an inpatient nurse. Last night, however, I was browsing a travel nursing website, and I discovered that there are travel assignments for school nurses! I was so thrilled!!! Does anyone out there have experience traveling to other states or regions of the country? If so, what were your benefits and pay like? How long was the assignment? Do you recommend one agency over the next, based upon your overall experience? Thanks so much! :)

Need Public Health Nursing Certification
For those of you who took the child abuse course through Zur Institute or the Stop Child Abuse course listed above my comment for $77, did the CA State Board of Nursing approve those courses? I tried calling them yesterday, but the line was busy. The last thing that I want to do is spend my money on a course that the CA BRN does not approve. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Is there a national private duty agency that you would reccomend?
I agree with you ladies. Pay is low. They pay minimum wage for orientation, and make you pay for tb skin test, and cpr!

May I ask why you would not recommend Maxim for private duty? I just had an interview with them.

Patients and the race card
I am a black RN, and I believe a patient along with her daughter, did not want me to be their nurse due to my appearance or race. I can't think of any other reason. They complained to the house supervisor, because I asked if the patient could move her toilet hat, since we were entering the bathroom, and I had no gloves on. I guess they got offended by that, and reported me. When I returned to apologize, they called the house supervisor again, and I was yelled at.
