NEED INPUT!! Think this will get me into school?

Published

I have been in between a rock and a hard place in regards to getting my BSRN and pretty much EVERYTHING that could POSSIBLY go wrong has. My GPA is not high enough to get me into a University's nursing school program via the traditional application process HOWEVER I had a little thought light go off in my head recently and wanted to hear everyone's feedback on if they think my idea would work...

Now stick with me because as I said my situation is VERY complex...

I am currently 24 years old and have been working at this since HIGH SCHOOL. At the age of 18 I moved to California and graduated with honors from an extremely difficult EMT program with the intent of attending Loma Linda Medical School to get on a road to become a pre-med student. I worked as an EMT in Compton CA as I worked on my basic college classes however I had to abandon my plans suddenly because my sister killed herself when I was 19 and I had to move back to Arizona for my family.

Soon after my move back to AZ I began planning to start working as an EMT and to continue my path to a career as an MD, it was then a new law passed which prevented those under the age of 23 to operate an ambulance or handle any narcotics thus I lost my license. At this time that I was about 20 and was REALLY antsy to get going on my education...Medical school seemed too far from reach thus nursing seemed to be the next best choice. I found a private college called Grand Canyon University and enrolled in their "fast track BSRN" program. I excelled with an above average GPA, worked as a laboratory assistant, and was zooming quickly through my nursing pre-reqs. Everything was fine UNTIL Grand Canyon sold out to Phoenix College, became money hungry, and screwed over the nursing students.

GCU flat out failed me for 2 semesters of classes with 20 credits worth of classes EACH even though I had attempted to withdraw due to a medical reason. These Fs dragged down my overall GPA to a disgustingly low average...to add insult to injury...when I RETOOK the classes they failed me in they ROUNDED the F's with my A's making the grade a C...Basically it didn't help. On top of the whole issue with GCU screwing with my GPA it became apparent that the board of education was getting a little iffy about the Phoenix College/GCU merger and put the school's nursing school accredidation on hold. Basically it came to the choice of sitting in the school and risking loosing ALL my education or taking my credits and running before the school lost it's accredidation. So I picked up my credits, withdrew from the school and am now stuck in limbo. In the mean time I was able to regain my EMT cert as well as gain an CNA...

THIS is my question...

I CAN'T get the F grades taken off of my records to repair my GPA and THAT is what is screwing me...I have a CNA and EMT license as well as AMAZING recommendation letters from ALL of my professors attesting to my academic accomplishments and skills. Do you think that if I write some of the nursing schools that I WANT to get into and EXPLAIN the specifics of my situation I could have a SHOT at being heard??? I KNOW that I am smarter and can do BETTER than half of the kids that are applying to nursing school and it's BS that underlying misfortunes have effed me...I just don't know...What do you think? Do I have a snowball's chance in hell???

So ... you're not listening (surprise) .... no one is going to care about your story. Now you go and sulk in the corner for 14 minutes and come back and be nice. OMG you mean at 26 you might have to take responsibility! Stop the planet; how are you going to be able to survive, how will you go on, how will you be able to stand in societies embrace with the shame of it all. I mean I think you might be the only one of this earth that has had unfairness in life.

I know you don't want to hear it but life's tough ... therefore you must deal.

Getting screwed by my private college selling out to Apollo is far from a story it's a FACT. I would be DONE by now if that hadn't happened and facing people with attitudes like yours is the reason I keep seeing freshman nursing students who ONLY have book smarts take spots and drop out EVERY CYCLE.

You seem very bitter, which isn't helping--and may actually be getting in your way. Perhaps you need to take a deep breath and reassess. Remove the chip from your shoulder and you might see more clearly to your left or right.

I'm sorry to say that I can't even tell if you really want to be a nurse. There are people who actually take all their pre-req classes over to get a better GPA. I'm not saying that is something everyone can do, given cost and etc. But the point is if you want to be a nurse badly enough, you will find a way. It might take more time and effort than you'd like and you might think it is unfair. However, if you can start to emotionally get over what has happened to you regarding your academic past, it might change your perspective and you will find the road going forward will be less trying.

Bitter, mad, unrealistic, stubborn, ... you didn't go to the corner and wait 14 minutes to come back and be nice. Listen; I have my own son to deal with so I have to start the adoption papers and let you go.

Look at all the support you received on this forum and you're still complaining. Seriously; your anger has caused a wall of frustration that blinds you to the reality factor of the situation. I'm surprised that as smart as you say you are that you finally don't get it ... it's not likely to happen ... at all ... ever ... finite ... ca-put ... pau.

Hey diddly hiddly ho neighbour -

Just wanted to tell you not to give up on him- He needs you and your support right now more than ever, ...and walking away from your only adopted son would just cause more problems.

You, me, us , everybody wants nothing but the absolute best for little Berry (OP). He's a special boy- don't forget that!

OP, I hope that you will read this in the spirit in which it is intended.

AN is overrun with students such as yourself. I know you hate to hear it, but it's true. And when I say students such as yourself, I'm referring to someone who:

*Wants desperately to be accepted into nursing school.

*Has some issue (gradepoint average, criminal history, employment history) that is throwing a wrench into the works

**Is adamant that his/her situation is far and away different/better/less serious than his/her peers and that his/her particular "issue," whatever it may be will be easily surmounted if only "someone would listen to my story" because he/she is far & away more deserving, smarter, more misunderstood than all of the other applicants.

*Virtually breaks down when given realistic advice on AN and resorts to the tired old "nurses eat their young, no wonder every worthy nursing student quits school cause you guys are so mean" response.

It just gets a little old. I'm actually surprised that you got as many constructive responses as you did.

Please do yourself a favor and try to find the best solution/school that you can without trying to remake your history. Accept some responsibility for your current predicament and buckle down and make the best of it. Above all, give thanks to the heavens above that you are being supported until the age of 26. That aspect alone of your situation gives you a huge advantage over your co-applicants.

Good luck.

Gang, we've been had. The OP first said his college merged with Phoenix. Now it's Apollo. Grand Canyon University is still up and running as itself, not as Phoenix or Apollo. It's IN Phoenix.

I know the dean of the nursing school. I think I'll give her a call...

I know Berry, he wouldn't do that to us.

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! THAT IS TOOOOO CRAY!

idk if this is just a mix up or what but i will pray for you nonetheless.

I'm a bit confused. However why can't you just omit your previous transcript when you apply and start fresh? Sure, you won't get credit for the classes you did that you didn't get F's in but you won't have those F's to show. Here if you don't submit a transcript it's just not counted (which for many people that can go against you d/t to pre-reqs and stuff).

Because I have too much time on my hands (not!) I did a little research.

First of all, the Apollo Group is the parent of UOP so in that small way, the story makes sense. However, the Apollo group has nothing whatsoever to do with GCU other than several of the higher ups (CEO's) etc, came from working at the Apollo Group before going and working with GCU. So perhaps some policies changed, but they were not bought out by the Apollo Group, that I can find anyway. All investor relations documents online with the SEC say that Grand Canyon U is owned by Grand Canyon Education.

I also looked for law suits involving GCU and/or Apollo Group. I did find two similar law suits relating to the Whistle Blower law (filed against each, but completely different suits) and some financial aid class action law suit - but no law suit connecting the two. Granted, I spent about 32 seconds on this research, but still - if there were a 15 million dollar law suit because of the joining of two entities -I think it would have come up in the first 3 pages of google searching.

in other posts, the OP indicates several contradictory things:

  • He/She also indicates that they would be willing to go ANYWHERE there isn't a waiting list AND The OP also says they would NOT be willing to leave Arizona because the 'merger' wiped him out financially -
BUT the OP also says he/she has no debt.
  • He/She is also extremely smart and ready for medical school, AND also has a learning disability.
  • The OP has found that GPA doesn't matter for getting into school, but experience does and he/she doesn't have the right kind of experience.
  • The OP has found that GPA is the ONLY thing that matters so they can't get into school.

I can't possibly make out what's going on here other than there is SOME reason the OP can't get into nursing school and some reason why he/she obtained 40 credits worth of F's for 'no reason'. 40 credits in 2 semesters? I mean, I know it can be done, but it's not usual.

OP - I don't know what's happening with you but it's obvious that you want to go to school somewhere. The rest of it I will take with a grain of salt. I apologize if you think I'm being harsh here - but your posts have been contradictory. But, assuming that you are willing to go anywhere - Here in PA, a 3.2 will get you into a state school with no waiting list. Several parts of the state are pretty good with the job market too. So, if you are truly willing to go anywhere...PA is at least one answer. I'm sure there are a ton of other states in the USA where a 3.2 will get you into nursing school. If Arizona isn't the place - move on. It's a big country.

Lastly, I can't believe I just spent 15 minutes writing this post at 10:30 at night...I know I had better things to do!
