Need Advice

Hi Everyone,

Im a newbie, first time posting. I guess im one those ppl. needing advice and support

Just recently I realized that I wanted to be a nurse so I am currently taking nusing pre-req. but I realized that with my low GPA (2.57) I dont think I can get very far. I was taking pre-req for pharm. cuz my mom wanted me to become a pharmacists but I realized that just wasnt for me and during that time I had amily issues. I guess you could say that was my first mistake following someone else's dream. Due to that I wasn't taking my classes seriously. I did REALLY bad in Anat. 1 & Physics, I got a D :crying2: , recieved C's in Chem 1&2, Anat. 2 and econ. I am residing in Illinois, I go to University of Illinois at Chicago. I am retaking Anat 1 in a community college. I dont have my CNA license. I have only been doing a bunch of volunteer work. I am planning on applying to nursing schools by the end of this year hoping to get in Fall '10 (I Know my chances are very low) ... I dont know what to do, its been constantly bothering me and I keep wishing I could turn back time. I plan to get into a BSN program. Any suggestions about what I can do to increase my chances in getting into a program and what schools you guys would suggest (I dont care where it is even if it has to be out of state).

Please help me ... I need some kind of Hope that my life isnt over because right now I feel like I have no future ... :crying2:

Thank you in advance.

If I were you I would repeat the courses that you did poorly in and look for nursing programs that will accept your repeated classes. Schools have different policies regarding the repetition of courses, so you will need to investigate these programs to see what will be best for you. Continue your other nursing prerequisites with the goal of getting the best grades possible from here on out. You will be competing with students who have 4.0 GPAs so you need to get it together and be prepared to have a harder time of it. Good luck.

If you really want it, you'll make it happen. That's probably not what you want to hear right now but it's the truth. Like caliotter3 said, you can retake the classes you did poorly in. A lot of schools have a grade forgiveness program so the new grade will replace the old bad grade. You mentioned not having your CNA liscense...why don't you get one? That is favorable on a nursing school application. Nothing comes fast and easy in life...you get what you put in. Prepare to bust your butt. :)

So you know, I was in a similar situation as you. Father had a stroke, best friend was addicted to heroin, broke up with my boyfriend of 5 years and I lost focus and my gpa went to the negatives practically. I've very slowly built it back up to a 3.47 and am just a couple classes away from being admitted...I'm very confident in that. It didn't come easy and the anxiety about it kills me sometimes. What happens is meant to be. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!

Thanks a.caroline & caliotter3

Do u think i should still retake my physics class even though its not pre-req. for any school i have looked into?

If you retake the physics class, depending upon the policies of the school and the number of allowed course repetitions for "forgiveness", the grade will no longer be able to drag your GPA down. In other words, repeat it to raise your GPA.

Uhm so far the ones I have looked into only allow one forgiveness so im reallyso i decided to retake my anat. class since it was a pre-req. I dont really know any school that has a bsn program that has a pretty lenient course repetitions.

You would definitely need to take A&P over because you need at least a "C". And physics? Why take it if it's not needed for the program? Just concentrate on what's needed because A&P as you know is a handful all by itself. You can do it if you put your mind to it....it's hard work, but worth it! Good luck!

The schools here usually want you to take both A&P 1 and 2 at the same college. So make sure it's okay to retake it at the community college for a better grade since I don't think you're planning to retake A&P 2 for the program you're applying to. I agree with caliotter3 as far as your physics class is concerned. The bad grade is gonna drag your GPA down. It may not be a good idea to take A&P and Physics in the same semester although I'm sure it's doable but I do recommend you retaking it to bring your GPA up even if it isn't a requirement.

Trust me, I can definitely relate. I graduated from college with a 2.88 GPA ( I rounded it up to a 2.9)

Ended up failing college algebra my first semester and chemistry at a 4 yr school. Retook college algebra and got a C. Tried to retake chemistry but was bored to tears so I dropped the class. Ended up switching my major from bio/chem pre-med to pre-nursing. Took the required chemistry classes and A&P 1. Failed A&P 1 and the lab got a C in the first half of chemistry and a D in the second half. I didn't even bother retaking my classes because I had just given up on the idea of working in the medical field. Regretted that decision when I basically had to start all over again.

To make a long story short. After I graduated, I realized the medical field was for me so I decided to pursue a degree in nursing...again

Had to take gen bio got a B took A&P 1 and 2 and got a C in both. Then I retook chemistry and got an A.

I couldn't get accepted into a nursing program to save my life...was feeling extremely down but was wait listed at one school so that gave me a little hope. About 3 weeks ago I got a phone call informing me I had been accepted at a CC.

So it can happen with a low GPA but just be prepared to have a few doors closed infront of you before God opens a window!

Good luck!!!

Thanks CrunchyMama, I took physics when I was trying to fulfill the pre-req. for pharm. thanks again =D

MotivatedOne --- Yeah Im kinda worried about taking A&P at a different college, I know I have no chance with UIC but thats ok, but im hoping to get into other schools even if I have to move out of state.

Whats CC? sorry im new to this abbreviation thing ... lol if you dont mind me asking what does your profile look like applying to CC. Congrats on your acceptance & good luck.

Thanks for your advice

DONT give up!!!! If you want to be a nurse you can achieve that goal but you just have to do a lot of research to accomadate your particular situtation. I would definitely say that you should take AnP over, just as someone else mentioned. When you apply to most nursing problems they will ask for an optional essay (which i recommend you do) and sometimes they give you the option of explaining your educational history if it is not exactly stellar. Call different schools and speak to an admissions counselor. They will help you in your efforts. If a particular school does not offer you much hope of gettin into their program then be sure to ask if they can recommend any other programs!!! You can do this!!! TRUST me...good luck and be sure so research every single nursing program in your area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC stands for community college. My profile...I have two years experience as an NA (nurse's assistant) A bachelor's degree in only God knows what...A 2.88 undergrad GPA, a 3.2 science/nursing pre req GPA. A cumulative score of 76 on the TEAS test and by the grace of God was accepted into an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) program for this upcoming Fall semester.
