Hi folks:
I am new grad, working at trauma center for 1 year already. Tired of seeing blood and wounds, thinking about QUITTINg nursing. Any departments folks here can remmend that I don't have to see a lot of blood and wounds? Thank you for helps!

So many it's hard to count. Check out the forums listing on the main page for starters and see what's interesting. Can't guarantee you won't have to deal with something yucky a little bit everywhere, but if you're up for a change of pace, no need to quit the field altogether :).

I think there are too many opportunities in nursing doing various things to quit it all together.

I am a Radiology RN working in the CT department. It is great. It can be fast paced, I don't spend very long with each patient, basically I check them in, see if they need an IV, and hang out in case they need something(like somebody has a contrast reaction) I work 1200-2030 M-F, but there are day postions as well. Worth looking into!

Why in the world would you quit nursing altogether after only trying one thing? Just think of all the time and effort, not to mention $$$, that you put into your schooling.
There are tons of opportunities available for you that aren't as stressful as trauma!
Let's see... physician's office, home health, LTC, summer camps, company nurse, school nurse, hospice, med-surg, OB, the list goes on & on!
Keep going until you find your niche.

What about urgent care? Still unexpected event(for excitement) but lots of controlled chaos and generalized treatments?
You sound overwhelmed and burned out which is common in high risk areas. You may just need a vacation?Don't quit nursing yet!

everyone is saying try something else.. but can you go into another area of nursing with just a basic RN? Do you have to get specfically trained in another area before you can work in it? i was told by an RN of 20 some odd years that after being a telephone triage nurse for a few years, she was sent packing but has not been able to find another job in ER, ICU, or any other dept. because she didn't have the "experience". Is that possible? i mean not even in a private md's office...
I have a really hard time believing that. I went from being an OB nurse(l&d, NN, PP) to a Radiology Nurse. They are in no way similar. Not even the same pt population. The new facility trained me, oriented me and set me free. I love it! I just can fathom that in todays world, with the shortage of nurses that they will not invest a little time to train a nurse in a new area. Happens all the time around here!

Absolutely, if you've got your RN you can work just about anywhere. Almost doesn't matter what your experience is (there are exceptions like flight nursing, etc.), they will train you. Tons of new grads go straight into the icu, I was one of them.
No, that is not possible. If it were, no new grad would *ever* find a job, and we would all be stuck in the same position for our entire careers. The wonderful thing about nursing *is* all of the opportunities available to us in all kinds of different fields. If that nurse couldn't find a job, I would venture to say that it is b/c she didn't look hard enough or she had bad references or something else, but not because she didn't have experience specific to that department.
