Need advice on CLEP please

Published

Ok so I have to take 3.00 hours of humanities, Life Span, and Sociology. I have already decided to CLEP Human Growth and Dev for Life Span. Can I CLEP Sociology? What about the Humanities credits? What did most of you guys do? Take it thru excelsior?

Also if you did CLEP how did you prepare? What study materials did you use?

Thanks so much and sorry for all the questions. I just feel so lost about all this!:o

You can CLEP sociology as well -- there is an Introductory Sociology CLEP that EC will accept for sociology credits.

For the Human Growth CLEP, I am seriously overstudying and I need to knock it off! LOL!! I've used instacert.com and petersons.com, as well as a Chancellor's Lifespan guide. I'll let you know how it worked out this evening when I get home. :)

I'm also planning on using instacert.com and petersons.com for Sociology, and I have a TCN Sociology study guide. That'll be my next CLEP, probably in early February.

I don't know about the Humanities credits ... my two other AA degrees helped me out in that regard. :D

Yep, you can clep sociology. You can also clep humanities EC will give you 6hrs for that one. However it is very broad and I have heard very difficult.I need The English credit so English comp (EC) is 6 hr. and can use 3 of those to satisfy 3 of my six humanities credits, and Ethics (EC)

for the other 3.You should probably call EC they can better help you choose the best ones for you. Also I am using Chancellors study guides for all of my tests, and am very pleased with them. You can often find them on Ebay cheap.

I looked on Amazon and found a study guide for both CLEP tests. Do you think that would prepare me, or should I try to get TCN or Chancellors on EBAY? I want to be prepared. Thanks!

Lunah I have a ?? Did you find instacert helpful? I found doing the ?'s from the cd helped me learn better than reading from a book. Of course I would not rely soley on this I do have other reading material but wondering if it is worht the $$.

Hi,

I am trying to CLEP two english courses as well. Collegeboard.com has CLEP study guides, broken down into each subject. They are just $10 and you can download it onto your computer and print it out.

I am nervous about taking the exams, I have never CLEPed anything before!

Hope this helps!!

You should be able to CLEP Analyzing/Interpreting Lit for 6 Humanities credits. You get a letter grade for it, too.

make sure you research your options before you test on anything. if you take your test via ec make sure they are 3 credit courses because if they are any less then you wont be able to transfer them for credit to other colleges ( if they require 3 credits which most do). clep test are widely accepted but most colleges /universities put a cap on how many hours they will accept(just fyi). after saying that i know you are just worried about now ,but you don't want to repeat any of this mess in the future. if it were me i would do the clep.

I did find instacert to be helpful, but I would have preferred multiple choice (multiple guess, ha ha) instead of fill-in-the-blank. Petersons.com is multiple choice, but only had 270 sample questions vs. the 337 on instacert.com.

Honestly, I could have gotten away with just reading my Chancellor's guide! :D

Does Excelsior assign a letter grade based on your passing CLEP score (specifically lifespan psychology), or do they just add the 3 credits to your transcript? Thanks!

This CLEP is just pass/fail, as is the sociology CLEP. There are others that will result in a letter grade, I think, but these two don't, so they won't change your GPA ... which can be a good thing OR a bad thing! LOL!! I'll just get 3 credits for this.

I just took the CLEP for General Psychology and Human Growth and Development recently. You do need to study more than one source. I used just the REA CLEP study guide for the General Psych. one and I passed but I scored much higher on the HG & D CLEP because I used multiple study aids.

I used the REA CLEP study guide, instantcert, wikipedia, and Peterson's. For instantcert I joined for the month to be able to have more practice tests. I read on the free forum link below after doing a search for the test that this was a hard test and people thought that the instantcert flashcards made the difference. I did not take the time to fill in the flashcards. I would just say the answer to myself after I read the question then click on the answer. It would then give me the right answer along with an explanation. After I did this over and over the info. really sticks with you. I advise using the forum link for instantcert below if you want to CLEP out of anything. They give you great pointers for each test. I also included a free link to Peterson's CLEP tests that someone mentioned on the forum.
