Hi!
I just graduated this April of 2011 at University of Perpetual Help-GMA Cavite, Philippines with a BSN Bachelor of Science Nursing.
My husband called the California Board of nursing a few months ago to confirm if I need to take the local boards here in the Philippines because what my clinical instructors said that the requirements now is different from before. So, I wanted to confirm it. And what the nursing board said that NO need to because it will not carry over in any way to USA and is not a requirement for taking the NCLEX in USA. Maybe because I'm a USA green card holder plus I have SSN, also ready to do my USA citizenship this summer. I'm from bay area northern California, Milpitas
I am returning to California in early June and wanted to see if anyone has experience similar to me? Is their anything I need to do here in the Philippines before I return to USA?? So I can apply for the NCLEX with as little hassle as possible.
Thank you for any ideas and suggestions:D

I don't know about the Philippines, but I made sure that I had filled out and sent all the paper work required to the board. I would suggest that you get your eligibility letter from the Board you are applying to before leaving. It's a hassle chasing things up with schools when you're not there.

Some states DO require a local license so you need to meet that state requirements. All instructions on what is required by each state in regards to registering as a RN in the US will be posted on their website. Generally transcripts have to come direct from nursing school however if in a sealed envelope with official school stamp the state may accept it as long as there is no indication that the envelope has been tampered with

If you are not going to take your local license, California BON would most likely ask you to submit a detailed course description of each subjects you have taken in nursing school plus a complete list/ information of all the clinical rotations you had. I know assessment is done on individual basis but these are the requirements they asked my cousin to submit. She is a US citizen by the way and did not take the local board as well.

California board of nursing website still requires a copy of license from the country where you were educated. What i know is that even if you are a greencard/permanent resident of the U.S., you still have to take the Philippine exam. The only reason that others don't have to take the exam is if they are NOT philippine citizen. If you're a US Greencard holder, you ARE STILL a Philippine Citizen and are ELIGIBLE to take the local board exam, and therefore must take the exam. That's what I understand. Unless you maybe wait till you're a US citizen, then you can say you're not a Philippine citizen and not eligible to sit for the local boards.
Not entirely true. Why would someone have to take the local board exam if they have no plans of practicing in the Philippines as in the case of those with permanent resident status in the US. Even without the local board exam they can still register as long as they have a valid reason. The only downside here is the number of additional requirements that CA BON will ask you to submit which obviously is a lot as compared to the minimal / basic requirements they would normally ask from an applicant who is licensed in his/her country of origin.

I have the same situation as you. :) Fix everything before you leave such as TOR, Breakdown of your grades, documents from your school. Make sure they'll be able to send that addressed to CA Boards. Refer to the site of California Boards cuz its all there.
No, you don't need to take the local boards. You just have to provide a copy of your diploma and written explanation why you're not taking it. :)
Hopefully this one helps.

I agree with nica r.n.
No need to take the Board in the Philippines. I also have the same situation. I first obtained the forms from CA BRN. The school sends the requirements directly to the Board and will inform you when you can take the NCLEX. Once you get here, enroll in a review program to get more advice.
I am taking a review right now for the NCLEX Examination through
Northern California Nursing Academy (www.ncnursingacademy.com) They're great!

All this time i know that you must take the Philippine board exam, so i just wanted to make sure that even if you're a FILIPINO CITIZEN, you can just explain why you didn't take the boards?? And with this you were both able to receive the ATT?? If so, what are examples of reasons why you didnt take it? is the reason of "i never planned to work in the philippines" good enough??
What is your status here in the US? If you are a permanent resident, you can give that as a reason for not taking the Philippine Board Exam... because you know for sure that you are immigrating to the US and will not work in the Philippines. Hope it helps.

I agree with CarribRN I worked at the hospital last year as nurse Assitant in UD and some of my RN co workers applied their license in Cali Bon and they didn't have to take local board in the PH since they are USimmigrants they just submitted a letter explaining why they did not take the local board.
Yes it is good enough just indicate in your letter that you are an immigrant and ur residing in US now and planning to be US citizen too and you don't have any plans of livig here because your residency is in California:)They will completely understand what u mean I'm pretty sure:)Goodluck!!!!
