NCLEX - A good idea?

Just wondering what the folks who have done it think.

I reckon it's a good thing. I have had a quick look at some questions, and they are fairly tough. Not being big-headed or owt, but I am one of the brighter students on my course, and, not saying I would struggle but I would have to put the work in...

I think quite a large percentage of my cohort would fail. But I think it is a good way to keep standards up, and get nurses learning what they really need to.

took the n-clex over 3 years ago now, and it was a good learning experience. personally most of my questions were delegation and management. dont think that you will find an exam like it in the uk.

i learnt loads of the things i should have learnt while doing my training!!!

personally i dont think i learnt half as much as i should while doing my training, i really learnt when i qualified

a bit like passing your driving test lol

the problem with the NCLEX is it is aimed at newly qualified nurses whereas a nurse with many years experience find faults with the questions and would priority differently... Found it hard to do and took 3 attempts to pass but did give me an idea into US nursing

I agree with this comment. It's been a real help to me in my current work! I'm of the opinion that we in the UK ought to have something similar!

Just took N-CLEX glad I DIDN'T have to before!! My driving test used to rate as the worst moment in my life but now it has been superceded! I have no idea how I did, it shut off at 75.

Thanks.

I had loads of telephone the priorty patient, plus infection control, tick all that apply drugs, teaching, a few who to see first & some delegation. I had absolutely no maths questions of any kind or any that I can remember as being straight forward, I felt like I only knew about 5 straight away that had obvious answers.:bluecry1:

I think maybe we should have a thread for post N-CLEX de-briefs - it's kinda cathartic to write this all down!:)

The Uk use to have an exam similar to the NCLEX. It is where we got the idea to have the nclex in the usa from. Ya'll had it until the system of training nurses was changed to unviersity beginning with project 2000. I sometimes get the feeling that the UK was in such a rush to be within a unviersity setting that they discarded everything that was good about the system of training here. :uhoh3:

We had an exam but it was all essay based. Plus we had to pass an exam & assignmenets each module to go on but again all essay based. Mind you, my course was one of those inbetween the change from the old style to P2000. I didn't realise the old "finals " that the SRN's talked about was in the multiple guess format (as I like to refer to the N-CLEX questions ;))

I still do think it's a good idea deep down but it was sure hell to go through & it's even worse waiting to find out if I've passed or not!

As for discarding everything that was good about nurse training I couldn't agree with you more! We had a sense of belonging to the hospital where we trained. We just about all got jobs there when we finished & you really learned what nursing meant from a practical point of view. Each year saw you take on more responsibility & by the time you qualified you really did have a good idea what to do - not least because you had been in the same place throughout your training (bar the psyche bit) so you knew how it worked.

I know there are some good things about uni training but I just can't think of them right now!:nurse:
