Anyone applying for Navy FY2020? If so, what are you specialities? Where are you in your packets?

And current navy RNs -- please tell me what your life was like from ODS to starting your career in the navy. I am slightly terrified!

Absolutely! Like I said I am currently stationed at Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay. I believe that it is the smallest hospital in the Navy with an annual ER census of 3-4 thousand individuals... Not exactly your standard ER which I would know little about as I worked primarily in MEDSURG prior to joining the Navy... Whatever you would like to know I can attempt to answer!

What’s your day to day life like? Do you rotate days/nights? I’m sure it’s different being at a small ER but would love to hear about what your day to day life is like right now

Well, currently my life is pretty amazing honestly... Guantanamo Bay is a very beautiful place to live. I typically work 0600-1800 MON, TUE, FRI, SAT, and then 0600-1800 SUN, WED, & THUR the next week (84 hrs in a two week period). Of course in the USN you get collateral duties such as supply officer, or wardroom secretary, etc.. that take additional time.. We are also assigned different roving patrols here on base which usually account for 4 or so hours of additional duty time per month.. I have gone to multiple trainings since I have been here including SAMFE or sexual assault medical forensic examiner training, so I am currently a SAMFE that is on call for two week increments every couple months.. So far it has been an interesting, at times difficult and frustrating, but overall awesome experience!

That’s super cool. My assistant manager also did forensic nursing when she was in the navy.

do you feel like you have enough free time or no? Or do you always feel like you’re working? Do you have to rotate day/night shifts?

Good Evening All,

I went to Officer Development School in AUG of 2018. I am currently stationed at Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay. I came in as a MEDSURG nurse but I have recently attained my 1945 or emergency room SSC. Hang in there if you have already submitted a package with your recruiter. I was told it likely wasn't going to happen, then I was waitlisted, then I filled someone's spot who bailed and here I am... I'd definitely recommend going on with whatever you want to do but "hurry up and wait" is literally the unofficial motto of applying to the USN as a nurse... Hopefully I see you all at some point!! Good luck!!!

Wow how interesting. How is it going so far? Did you have that as a “wish” destination?

Hello everyone,

I do feel like I have enough free time... When I started in the ER i was on nights but I am currently on days.. Because we have a fairly low volume ER, they try to switch the day and night nurses every 3-6 months just so that the night nurses can have more patient contact.. I know that here at NSGB they definitely try and get you time off.. its an isolated duty station with limited options for free time and its difficult at times to travel on and off the island so the command realizes the importance of liberty/leave periods.. I had San Diego twice and Hawaii on my wish list... I was offered Lamore, CA, Cherry Point, NC, and GTMO. Chose GTMO cause it was a hospital and it was on a beautiful island (Me and my wife love the ocean, water activities... ) Good thing about GTMO is sometimes you can work future orders into choosing GTMO because it is typically a HOTFILL billet (places that need replacements immediately because nobody is choosing to go there) ... but your orders are never legit until you see them on paper... Me and my wife truly love it here though.. beautiful island, weather is perfect (sometimes a little too hot) ocean is beautiful.. very safe, quiet, family friendly place...

Did anyone on here apply to the Jan board?if so has anyone heard if they were selected or not? TIA!

I read military healthcare is under one roof now DHA, does it mean all hospitals on all branches are open for everybody now? thanks

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

Eventually, yes you probably will. Who knows when that will be. The complete DHA transition is going to be lengthy...probably years. Even though everyone has the same governing organization now, many of the changes haven't been implemented yet. People are still generally going to bases run by their branches.

Anyone applying for FY 2021? Or know of thread that’s already going?

Specializes in ICU CCRN.

I applied for FY21 as a DA CCRN (ICU). I was told that the October board was for NCP applicants only and mine would be looked at in November. I haven't been able to find any other information or other people that have applied.
