The most important attribute of today's professional case manager is advocacy. Case Managers are very often a patient or client's first contact after an appointment, accident or hospitalization. There is frequently confusion and lack of clear direction for them. They feel lost, unheard and confused. The case manager has a very special role in assisting them to navigate through these difficult times. The case manager does a thorough assessment and determines needs and then clearly assists them jump through the hoops and navigate the obstacles in order to safely return to health. This advocacy is a special talent that case managers possess. It is key to our patients success.

1. I take a break and go outside and walk for a few minutes to re-charge.
2. Not only being the patient’s advocate but following up to guide the patient and the patient’s family is important. Navigating through the healthcare system these days are not easy and can be very stressful on a patient and their family. Checking with them to see if they have hit any barriers is important so you can assist with overcoming the barriers.

1. The resilience to deal with a hundred new things that come up every day. The resilience to deal with many different patients with many different needs. The resilience to learn something new every day to keep up your skills despite a demanding caseload. The resilience to deal with sometimes very emotional, very angry or grieving patients. RESILIENCE 2. To think and breathe I walk Chewie (best dog ever) for at least 30 minutes in the morning; and I use gardening as therapy, I love to see growth due to my care, just like in Case Management.

a. Set a timer and get on TikTok or facebook and leave a positive comment for someone.
b. Come up with at least 5 things I’m grateful for.
If I could only choose one attribute, I’d choose tact. Sometimes claimants need to hear something that they may not want to hear. It’s the Case Manager’s job to give them information while maintaining a positive relationship throughout the process.
