What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?

Planning deliberate personal breaks such as a lunch break or stepping off the unit for 15 minutes to regroup. Planning and few minutes of “closed door time” daily  is critical to allow me to review my day and ensure follow up is addressed; as it is easy to get buried & overwhelmed .

~What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional nurse case manager?

The most important attribute of a nurse CM is having the ability to effectively & meaningfully communicate in a fast paced and often chaotic work environment. The nurse case manager is the critical link in care coordination interactions; utilizing discernment of cultural, educational and social dynamics is crucial to being a successful case manager. Follow through is an imperative component of communication in order to provide quality care, customer service, and to prevent potential rehospitalization.

What do you think is the most important attribute of today's case manager?

The most important attribute of today's care manager is actually a blended attribute--the combination of characteristics that strengthen the care manager's ability to effectively support and interact with patients-- A healing touch, sincerity and kindness, and a compassionate heart. I am thankful for these attributes, which have allowed me to bring my best self to my role every day.

Specializes in Case Manager, Solid Organ Transplant Coordinator.

What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?

I have learned to work with the information in front of me, not read into the situation attempting to solve the “what ifs” that never happen. I force myself to take a walk and discuss complex cases with a seasoned case manager.

What do you think is the most important attribute of today’s professional case manager?

An attribute of a strong nurse case manager is efficiency. I take pride in completing tasks by the end of the day and often have anxiety if I cannot meet them, so I learned to permit myself to have overdue tasks. Doing so is not a negative reflection of my work ethic and it creates an environment of calm internally and externally.

Specializes in OB.

1) I like to snuggle with my son.  No matter how rough my day is, snuggling with him makes it all go away!

2)  I love how we are the masters of all!  There isn't a problem we can't solve!  We may have a lot of rocks to turn over, but eventually we find what we are looking for and we are able to help our members out more than they even expected us too!  To them, we go above and beyond yet to us, we are just doing our job!

1.) What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?

I slowly repeat the mantra "Only this moment, only this moment; only this breath!" to remain present and focused.

2.)  What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager?

Authenticity

Specializes in I am an RN, BSN and certified CCMC and CBIS.

When I become overwhelmed, as we all often do in this profession, I stop to take a breath, read a devotional or will often look back at texts, emails and pictures of former patients that have thanked me for being a part of their road to recovery.  Remembering why I do this job everyday motivates me on those crazy overwhelming days.

An attribute that is so important as a nurse case manager is being inventive.  There are so many patients that face barriers due to insurance, family support, and resources to name just a few.  As a case manager it is so important to not give up and to assist the patient by finding different ways to help them receive the safest most appropriate care and discharge to home.

What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?

I enjoy taking long walks outside in the sunshine.  I also like to sew and do crafts; things that can give my mind a break.

What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager?

I think organization is the key to being a successful case manager.

I enjoy reading to relax and clear my mind. An important attribute of today's professional case managers is their ability to navigate and direct for a client's/ patient's best health and mental well being outcome . I personally take on each case seeing the person as who they are ,what  specific needs , abilities and support systems are in place to assist the person in achieving  their best health and mental well being . Goals will vary. Actions and interventions will vary. The end result should always be the same. That is what I and other CCMs I interact with always strive to achieve. I am very proud to be apart of this elite specialty.

Specializes in Peds, Med-Surg, Disaster Nsg, Parish Nsg.
