I garden and sew for relaxation. I've always encouraged my patients(mostly WC folks) to get up and move around at least hourly. I think the most important traits Case Managers need are: 1) advocacy 2) sense of urgency to meet patient's goals to soothe them 3) critical thinking and creativity in finding solutions.
What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe? Every morning I go for a walk before work with my neighbors. It clears my head and invigorates me for the day.

1. At work, I physically step away from my work station to give myself the opportunity to think and breathe. If something is bothering me, I jot down the positive things in my life to help me gain perspective. It really shows me what’s truly important in life!
2. The most important attribute of todays case manager is embracing diversity. We all need to strive towards accepting those different than us to be able to clearly help. Without accepting others where they’re at, we won’t be effective.
1. What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?
Everyday, when I awake I start my day by taking the time to pray for family, friends, co-workers, patients and myself. I pray God will continue to give me the strength, patience, improved faith and guidance to help others to the absolute best of my abilities. I give thanks for all I have.
Next, I drink a cup of organic coffee and stay in a quiet, dim environment taking time to do some seated deep breathing. I reflect on the prior day and mentally prepare myself for another opportunity to provide my patients with more empathy, compassion and to be a better listener to be able to meet their needs. Then, I light a scented candle, keep my office lighting low and play low volume meditation music at my desk to start my day off in the right direction, with a calm and relaxed state of mind. I believe my patients will be able to sense this state of mind. I hope to be able to ease their pain and suffering, even if for the moment.
What do you think is the most important attribute of today’s professional case manager?
I feel the most being an active, compassionate listener is the most important attribute of being a great Case Manager. Often patients are so overwhelmed with the complexity of their multiple co morbid conditions, their stress becomes a barrier. It is vital to listen to the patients concerns, their perceived #1 health priority and listen to their struggles and barriers. Allowing the patient the opportunity to talk without interruption shows concern and compassion, while giving them a sense of empowerment over their own health. Once the patient has the opportunity to vent, he/she will be able to develop goals and develop strategies to overcome their barriers which will ultimately improve their health outcomes. I always put myself in my patients shoes and this helps me to better meet my patients needs with compassionate care. ~Debra Marsch, RN, BSN.

I think the most important attributes to have are collaboration and multitasking skills. The case manager is the center of the case. We use interprofessional collaboration to carry out the individualized plan of care with the goal of improving the health status of the patient. This often requires multitasking and working different aspects to get the desired outcome.

I make sure to leave work at work. I make sure to schedule some PTO at least once a month for some self care and prevent burn out. I also use my weekends to enjoy my family, do hobbies, and rest.
2. What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager?
I believe collaboration is key, with the patient being the most important part of the team. There are so many moving parts managing a patients/members case, we must work together as providers/advocates/case managers to assist the patient to receive the best possible care. We as case managers are usually the ones who gather the information and connect patients to the appropriate resources. We as case managers are usually in a members life during a difficult time. Whether it is deteriorating health, work injury, homelessness, inability to care for self, ect. Case managers are the ones that connects Resources to the best of their abilities. In order to provide the best of care, a strong collaboration between all members working on the case is key to successfully assisting our patients and helping them continue to improve/maintain their health and dignity.
