Narcotic free areas?

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a nice afternoon or evening. So, I am really getting antsy and desperate for a nursing job. Of course, I have narcotic restrictions (I think it's standard with monitoring programs). Which areas can I look into that do not normally deal with narcotics?

Outpatient physician offices- Family Med or Peds. We never had any Narcs in the office.

Developmental disabilities nursing. . .

Companies such as United Cerebral Palsy often use nurses to perform basic skills at the many group homes that they operate. Also, smaller companies own clusters of group homes that house developmentally disabled adults. These places need nurses to take off orders, check the MARs, be on call, perform routine assessments, and so forth.

I don't know. I was told no home health and I have a narcotic restriction--I really think it could be because of the alcohol abuse (thinking on the lines of a gateway drug). Nothing was really expanded upon other than "narcotic restriction".

Probably: the nature of the disease of addictions means you're susceptible to developing cross-addictions to new substances. It's not uncommon to see a lot of ETOH addicts drift into opiate or (more commonly) benzo abuse since they're all such lovely CNS depressants :/ I don't usually see ETOH addicts get hooked on the stimulants and the daytrips, though that's not to say it can't/doesn't happen.

That being said, the program may be very precise about what you should/shouldn't be around. IMO, shoot them a note and ask exactly what the narcotics restriction entails. Better you ask and know.

The OR. There are no narcotics in our Pyxis anesthesia is in charge of all narcotic medications and they are all intravenous.

If its just "narcotics" then psych is normally probation friendly. You will however be around scheduled ADD and ADHD meds.... Rarely are "narcotics" on those units.

Mother-baby. I don't routinely work there, but in the times I have floated there, I never administered any narcs. These patients post-delivery all get ibuprofen!

not mother-baby- many mothers get norco- fresh c-sections get IV morphine, etc.

A big part of me, almost decided part of me, would like to only apply to public health nurse positions because that is where I want to be. Just volunteer at various organizations that could be of benefit to me and interest me. I have a small job now that gives me some money. I really want public health...the odd thing is some of the positions say they want an unencumbered license. I find that very odd because normally health depts don't deal with narcotics, so my narcotic restriction really shouldn't be a big deal (if you work at the health dept and deal with narcotics...please tell me). I have a "Valid Virginia Only" license, but since those are state jobs, that really shouldn't be a big deal either since I would be working within Virginia.

I am curious why some postings have a unencumbered license as a special requirement...
