My inability to brown nose is holding me back in my nursing career

Basically, I'm my own worst enemy. I'm too proud to brown nose, and brown nosing is vital in my work place to get ahead. I'm frustrated with myself. I'm able to be a phoney with the patients and their family, but I can't do it with HR and the CNO. I know I'm not going to get the diabetic educator job because I haven't brown nosed enough, and I'm up against some real comformists. It's frustrating, but I just don't seem to be able to brown nose to save my own life.

I see others do it, they really know how to play the game. It's not that I'm rude to higher ups, but I refuse to be a yes man. I'm too honest. Ugh, I wish I could bring myself to do it, but it seems to go against my nature.

Is there a difference between having great social/interpersonal skills and brown-nosing? Good people skills is an asset. What exactly do you mean by brown-nosing?

Unfortunately, I'm set in my ways. I turned 50 this year, so it's really hard to change my hardwiring. I think I'm feeling a ton of self-doubt right now, even though many things are right in my life.

It's just that I know that my ability to communicate with patients and win their trust is totally exceptional. My bedside manner is totally disarming to my patients. I'm able to intuitively sense where they are coming from and meet them where they are. I'm great with families too. I know I would be best for this diabetic ed job because of these strengths.

Yes, where I work it is incredibly political, and I admit it, I'm a poor politician. It's frustrating, but the reality is that my workplace is extremely political and I haven't played the game properly. I could kick myself!

I hear ya hun.

My bosses learned long ago not to ask for my opinion. Because I will give it. :lol2:

I worked for an Evil Empire that, after getting in trouble with the Feds, was required to give all employees yearly inservices on corporate compliance, not trying to defraud the government, etc.

So we come in on our time off, and get divided into small groups at different tables. On each table is a huge gameboard that looks for all the world like CandyLand. We have little cars or some stupid piece and we move around the boards if we answer questions correctly. They were tossing JollyRanchers at us too :stone

By the time this farce had ended an hour later, I was so ticked off. The educator went around the room and asked us to evaluate the "class". I told her that we were all professionals and adults, and I didn't appreciate being treated like I was in pre-school. If there was information I needed to do my job, give it to me straight without all the cutesy crap. I told her it was demeaning and degrading.

I was told I wasn't a "team player".

and to answer RNperdiem's question, a brown-nose would have stated the class was very helpful and a whole bunch of fun.

and of course, thank them profusely.

Very well said.

We had the same BS at my Hospital System, where we had compliance training with the huge posters and a little journey and we had to make up stories to go along with the pictures, or something like that. It was one of the most condescending bullcrap I have ever had to deal with!!!

Ugh.

Our docs were sent letters with the regulations spelled out. I asked why the staff couldn't have been given the same consideration--- and respect.

Because obviously we need to more remedial training especially given the fact that none of us had one the to do with the bad practices that got the hospital system in trouble to begin with. GOD that still ticks me off!! :angryfire:angryfire:angryfire

Me too.

CandyLand. JollyRanchers flying through the air. I **** you not.

Every time I get sentimental and start missing my old job, I think about that kind of crap.

Exactly. They are a mutual admiration society. It's similar to The Emperors New Clothes where everyone pretends what a fine new outfit the Emperor is wearing, but in fact he is start naked. That's how I sometimes see it at least.

All these years of work, Ive never brown nosed once in my life. I always get what I went after.

At least this thread makes me feel better and less freakish. Yes, I'm a non-conformist in many ways. Thanks for all the responses. This site is a great solace, I'm finding.
