A friend of mine used me as a reference not too long ago. The hospital she applied to outsources the duties of checking references. I happen to know these companies often use emails to do so. Knowing this, I've been going through my junk email folder with a fine tooth comb in case the request for a reference ends up there.
While scanning through all the junk emails, I ran into the usual unsolicited messages: A man who came upon one million dollars in gold is being hunted by the Russian mob and he needs my help/bank account numbers, a few new ways to extend my (ahem) and of course the messages from Tracey/Jessica/Cindy who all just arrived in town and are anxiously waiting for me to contact them because they need (ahem).
But that was not all that was there. There was a new member to the junk mail club today: Messages from nursing schools wanting to inform me that nurses were in very high demand and there were only a few seats left for this semesters classes so I better hurry and apply.
Now, at first I chuckled and thought to myself "Ha ha, Im already a nurse, they don't know me at all." Then after some time passed I began to realize how funny it really was, for a different reason.
See, as I stated, these messages were in my junk folder. Seems as though my email filter is pretty well informed about the current state of nursing. Its able to overlook the media/political driven idea of there being a nursing shortage and recognize that these messages are a scam.
Then I got to thinking, what if we could get politicians to sit down with my filter and have a heart to heart? It could only help since so many of them seem to be in the dark about what is going on around them. It would be especially beneficial to the public if the meeting were televised. Its not as if there is much to watch on TV these days anyway.
What got me was, these schools not only were pushing nursing in a way that made it seem as though you would have your first job lined up well before graduation (and have "multitudes of opportunities to choose from"), but they were also saying "You only need a two year degree to make 50-60K, starting salary."
Now, I've seen the posts by new grads stating no one will even interview them until they have a BSN. I've also seen posts by people who had to move to find work or commute ungodly distances. Somehow, I think the new grad making 60k is the exception not the rule (as these schools would have you believe).
Now if only I could convince my filter to respond to all this junk mail. Id tell it to let these schools know they can kindly place their scamming recruitment messages directly in their (ahem).
Nah, its too smart to use language like that, so it can phrase the reply however it wants.

Your post got my curiosity piqued. So, I checked my spam folder and now I'm in a quandary.
Since I now have a bevy of females stalking me on the net, which Canadian pharmacy should I use to purchase my Viagra?

Lol. Ask the guy being held captive in Africa who wants to give you 10M to hold onto until his release.

Your post is probably the most clearheaded look at the nursing situation that I have read in years. Thank you for posting this and providing us with something worthwhile to think about.

I'm still waiting for my free iPhone. And I'm a little worried about my friend who got mugged in London, and is asking me to send some cash through PayPal. Funny, because I saw her today in town.

It makes you wonder who is gullible enough to fall for this stuff?

Americans! Unfortunately, we gave hundreds of millions of dollars overseas to Email scams. I saw a dateline special about it not too long ago. A poor elderly man went into massive debt because of it, and he STILL continued to do it. Oh, Americans. We love our burgers and easy money.

Hey my husband's grandfather got a call from someone in Canada saying that he was my husband and was stuck. They said he had been in a horrible car accident, and that a friend even died. His grandfather has slight dementia so luckily there was another family member there at the time, or he might have sent the money they requested. Some people are just disgusting.
