My dad is having a triple bypass tomorrow...

and, I want to know from all you with cardiac experience, how worried should I be about this?!? Okay, I know it's serious, it is his heart after all! But, I am wondering what the mortality rate is of heart bypass. Especially in pts who have not had an MI already.

My dad went to his PCP last week for his annual exam and the MD heard a murmur. He had a cardiac cath last week and it was decided the damage was more than what an angioplasty could help. So, it was decided last Tuesday they were going open him up tomorrow.

My dad quit smoking years ago, more than ten, I think, and he lost approx 30 pounds this past winter. He says he's p*ssed because he has been everything right and he still has to go through this. I just told him, if he hadn't done everything right, he'd probably be dead already!

My stepmother called me earlier today and said the MD told her my dad's surgery went very well! She was chomping at the bit to see him, but when she called me, dad was still in recovery.

I hate being so far away, I'm in WI and dad is in NC. Right now, the finances don't allow me the opportunity to get a plane ticket to see him. Besides, when I asked him last week if he wanted me to come, he said, "Don't be ridiculous!" Okay, then!!!

Thanks again to all of you for your wonderfully kind thoughts and wishes!

God Bless you all!!

good. hope he makes a FULL and SPEEDY recovery!

Good Luck.I will be praying for your Dad.................

Bypasses are done on 90 year olds. They do well. This is getteing to be a routine surgery. Yes there are risks. Don't go by the numbers. If this is what is best for your father then believe in it and go from there. My father had a 4 vessel CABG and a ventricular graft at age 65, the doctor gave him a 50 - 50 to just come off the table; today at 72 he plays golf 3 times a week. I worked in CT stepdown, I sent people to surgery that by the book had no right to be alive and come away better than ever. The number are not everything. I wish your father the best.

My prayers will be with your father and your family tomorrow. I will not say there is no reason to worry, but, since he has not had a MI, it means cardiac muscle is intact and that is always a plus in these cases. I will be waiting on news this Friday, my hubby is having a cath, he has had 3 cardiac procedures already. I trust the Master Healer will be with both our loved ones and touch them with His mighty hand .

I'm so glad that he did well through the surgery. I will continue to say a prayer for your family.

So glad your dad came through surgery o.k.

What a great hug!!! Thanks, Deb!
