My *&#$%# hands!!!!

ok, I failed my first checkoff on sterile dressing change because I grazed my breast w/the palm of my hand and didn't realize it to call it. Luckily today on my retake I passed but the instructor told me that I came VERY close to making the same mistake :nono: They aren't messing around in my program and have already kicked out 40 people! I came very close to messing up this opportunity. What I'm worried about is that on Thursday I have to do a foley catheter insertion checkoff and don't want to make the same mistake. Is there anyway to practice keeping sterile field? I have a friend who would have been a 2nd yr student but failed that is coming over tomorrow night to help me practice w/a grapefruit so she can keep an eye on my hands.

I'm lucky that she's offered to do this but is there anything that I can do on my own? I really had no idea on either checkoff that I was messing up/almost messing up.

I passed the foley checkoff!!!

elby812, how did you do?

Woo hoo! I start nursing school in August and now I know to make myself a grapefruit lady parts if I need more foley practice!

Congratulations. :)

haha, it really did help btw. Just make sure to cut it so you have to hold it apart (like the labia) to reach the 'meatus'

Congratulations CabyKay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I passed too! Thank you Jesus!! I was soooo nervous. The first thing I had to do was an IM injection- my instructor says, "your pt has nausea, what do you do?" And my mind just went completely blank. Then half through rattling out the 5 rights, I was so nervous, I said, "Hold on, please let me stop for a second" took a deep breath and regrouped, and continued on much better from there.

But I feel much better now that its over with. Now off to study for a concepts test....

Keep your hands above your waist at all times, and at least 6 inches out in front of your body. Below the table or field is considered contaminated. The outer inch or two of the field is nonsterile as well. Try not to pass your arms over your sterile field any more than you have to, to reach for things.

Don't sweat it too much. I failed HANDWASHING technique the first time...been an RN for over 26 years now. Just be careful but don't stres out too much over it, you'll get through {{{{cabyday}}}}}
