Took my husband to the doctor's office yesterday. He has fever (max 101.8), sore throat, muscle aches, nausea, chills, dry cough, and dizziness. Doc did a strep screen, came back positive (figured that, I had my usually January case the week before). But, I also asked him to do a flu screen, since all his symptoms fit so well. He refused, becuase my husbands muscle aches were deceased after I managed to get enough advil and tylenol in him to break his fever. He states the muscle aches would not have deceased any if they were due to fever. I've searched in my books and online, and I can't find anything to back that up. Now, I realize rest and increasing fluids in the best treatment for the flu, and the poor dear is getting all that. But, I still would have like to have known for sure. I have strep 3-4 times a year, and I don't have all those symptoms. I wouldn't have taken but a minute to have done the flu screen...I would have done it myself if he wanted me to.
Just an aside, me and the same doc got into a little arguement the previous day about a patient I had. Maybe he was punishing me, I don't know.
How do you know that you're getting the flu, and not another viral illness?
because I went to my pcp and got swabbed the last 2 times and she told me so........ I had all of the symptoms and the residents and my co-workers were dropping like flies and they quarantined the facility 2 years ago...
This is amazing. I haven't been afflicted with the flu in 12 years.
You are very fortunate to have such a strong immune system. My husband has NEVER had the flu. That's impressive. The man is never ill.As for the vaccine according to the cdc " The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists' estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year." It's a crap shoot and if they miscalculate alot of us are SOL....
I hope you and hubby are doing better by now.
I was in my 20's and preggers the first time I ever got strep. I had no idea and thought my sore throat was actually from quitting smoking and it wasn't even that bad at all. What brought me to the docs was the worst muscle and body aches ever and just a feelin of lethargy and no energy at all. I could hardly keep my eyes open and was burning up too, and I attributed that to it being a hot July day.
Well I had a temp of nearly 105 and was almost admitted! The docs and nurses were amazed that I had never had strep before then. Other than my congenital kidney issues, I had been a really healthy as a kid. Gosh I wish I had that immunity now.

You mean to tell me the residents had been vaccinated and were dropping like flies? Sorry that does sound more like science fiction than anything factual.
I see that your location is pergatory? Why is it that you feel like you are neither alive nor dead? No harm meant, honest, just honestly curious as to why you would say that you are residing in pergatory?
Here is an interesting article about the flu vaccine:
o for lords sake....Yes-we got our vaccine very late that year and many many of our residents got the flu as did my co-workers.We did lots of swabs and the positives had to be reported to the state department of health. We were under quarantine over the Christmas holidays-no school kids in to carol that year... Do you remember the year of the "vaccine shortage?" We were the last facility in this area to get ours. I am certainly not a liar- and don't take too kindly to being called one....You mean to tell me the residents had been vaccinated and were dropping like flies? As for my "location" from the American Heritage Dictionary - pur-ga-to-ry (pûr'gə-tôr'ē, -tōr'ē)
n. pl. pur-ga-tory .
A place or condition of suffering, expiation, or remorse: a purgatory of drug abuse.

Respectfully, I did not call you a liar, not even close. I said it sounded like science fiction. If you feel that I implied that you were a liar, I apoligize as that was in no way my intention.

I merely asked the question out of curiosity and made that clear. I didn't understand it and still don't but we have the freedom of speech and I fully believe we all should use it. How else will we learn?

That's what fiction is.You can back-pedal and argue semantics all you like but it's right there in black and white. As for the topic-the CDC states that the vaccine is NOT 100% effective-it is not unusual for people to contract a flu after they have received it (and I don't mean a day or 2 later---I'm referring the entire flu season...)
Re: refusing to test for the flu: My question would be "what's the point?" There is no treatment for the flu itself, we can only manage the co-morbidities. No antibiotics for the virus, and those anti-flu potions are only minimally effective, especially after the symptoms are firmly established. This is an example of waste in healthcare. You have to ride it out, then treat the secondary infections. Over medication (abx) is what got us into this MRSA mess. CDC website has a good link to superinfections because of overmedication. We do not want to create a super-strength version of the garden-variety flu, we have enough trouble with the super-strains now.
