Mt. SAC application for spring 2016

Published

Hi everyone !!! After 5 years I finally decided to pick up where I left off. Time to apply for nursing school :D

Application period is July 1st - September 1st. I'm coming in with 54 points pre-HESI. Just wanted to wish anyone else out there applying to Mt. SAC good luck with the HESI tomorrow ;)

I have yet to see a thread on this particular application period for Mt. SAC so I hope many more join this thread as we proceed with this tedious journey.

Thats awesome congrats ! Yes same here due to how far Mount sac is to me I am still applying to RCC but nonetheless still excited to possibly be in a program with all of you.

I came across this YouTube link because I am trying to mentally prepare myself for nursing school as much as possible, and this nurse really had great tips on how to succeed in our nursing school journey. I highly encourage you all to check it out regardless of what school you end up at. It is a lenghty video so if you don't have the time to watch it in one sitting just break it up into parts and take it all in.

So I just had my counseling appointment. I got the 55th slot with 75 points!!

While this is my "backup school" because of the drive, I can't wait to maybe work with all of you!

Congrats @futuremurse93!

Thanks @MzMira!

@Yclario, I've literally been scouring the net for advice on how to prepare. Thanks!

I would love to work/study with you guys, too.

I went to the bookstore today because I wanted to see which books were in the "Nursing Books in a Box" package, but there wasn't any on the shelf. A girl who works at the store said it was basically all the books that are listed as "Optional."

Here's the list of "Optional" books (with ISBN #s) that were on the shelves for NURS 1A, 1B, & 2:

1. Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing, 10th edition - ISBN 9780133974362 (pub. date is 2016, so I think we'll have this same edition)

2. Pharmacology and the Nursing Process , 7th edition - ISBN 9780323113410 (I checked the Elsevier website and the 8th edition's expected availability date is 12-18-2015)

3. Nurse's Pocket Guide, 13th edition - ISBN 9780803627826 (new edition of this book will be released January 15, 2016)

4. Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses - ISBN 9780803639768 (pub. date is 2015, so I think we'll have this same edition)

5. Calculate with Confidence - ISBN 9780323089319 (2014)

Congrats murse! I also had my appointment today and was told pretty much the same info. I saw my application number was like 891. I wonder if they really had that many applicants? I was going to ask, but I was so nervous that I forgot to ask before I left. If that is so, we should be very proud! :D

I honestly think that package is a waste of money. Sure it comes with supplemental stuff, but everything you need to know are in the required books for the class. Unless there are new editions, you should be able to find the books for cheaper elsewhere. I'm sure you all know, never buy books on any school campus unless that is your last option. The books MzMira are the required books as far as I know and yes, you will use them all.

@barcode120x Mt. SAC is listing the package as a required material ($640) and the individual books (which adds up to $454.41, if bought as new at Sac Book Rac) as optional. There is another "ELSEVIER PKG. NURS 1A,1B,2 (FALL 2014)" ($487.85) that is listed as optional. Other than the Fundamentals of Nursing and Pharmacology books, which other books should we get? Also, what other supplies are we going to need? I know all of these will be covered during the week of orientation, but I'm trying to spread out my spending. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks @MzMira!

Glad im not the only one ;) she has a book that has great reviews on Amazon but she has it on her website and you can purchase it for one penny yep read that right ONE PENNY lol she clearly knows the nursing school struggle. Im getting it asap !

That is so smart of you to get started on this @mzmira because as we all know those fees are going to rack up far to quickly and to top it off right after Christmas ! Yikes ! It's getting all to real :nailbiting:

I was hesitant to post on this thread because I was an alternate last semester and didn't get in, but I just had my appointment and I am in! Couldn't be happier! Congrats to all of you, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

@ Mz

Aside from the Fundamentals and Pharmacology book, I believe you need the Nurse's Pocket Guide which is a novel-sized guide for nursing diagnosis which you will need for your care plans for each semester. You also need the Calculate With Confidence because you will get homework problems from there for Pharmacology. In terms of other supplies, stethoscope, pen light, scissors, and multi-colored pens are all you need. Everything else is supplementary (such as the pocket protector and clip board). I used the clip board the first 2 semesters but ended up dumping it and the pocket protector was just a waste (never used it lol). It was too much of a hassle to carry the clipboard everywhere because since it holds your papers/shift report things; you cannot lose sight of it since it contains patient information. I later found out the SBAR reports that were printed by my nurse was sufficient enough to last me the whole shift for the patient as well as my notes. By the end of 4th semester, all I carried was 1 paper per patient. Less stuff to carry the better. Makes you more mobile...so to speak.

As for how to prepare. Honestly, I would enjoy your time off even through winter. Fundamentals and Pharmacology are not hard to read textbooks. I started the program in spring just like you guys will and started reading beginning of February (at that time, the 4 day nursing orientation was like mid January). I was able to do about half the readings for Nursing 1A by the time I started the program, and that was just leisure reading. I was never behind in the readings the entire semester. Later, I realized that my learning style was better if I did lecture first, then read the chapters 1-2 days after lecture. Usually, they say to do the reading BEFORE lecture, but it's hard to do that because you are too busy studying for the upcoming Monday quiz...so why bother starting the next week's reading if it might just conflict with your current info for the quiz. That's just me though and it worked out fine. In fact, majority of my study group was like that.

Thank you for all the info. and advice @barcode120x! You are truly invaluable to all of us.
