MSN Nurse without clinical experience please help!!

Published

I'm a new nurse that has worked in a private home setting that really shouldn't be called a nursing position for three years. I am 90% with my MSN program in Leadership and Management and would like to know what opportunities will be available with my lack of clinical experience? I'm trying to avoid doing floor nursing for a long period of time. Any suggestions?

Having some dejavue: one of my first posts was on a thread where someone was asking how to become a nurse practitioner right out of the gate, without working as a nurse (or something like that). It seemed weird to me that someone could become an advanced practice nurse without ever having actually practiced nursing! And here's why. Sorry for you and hope it works out!

And yet PAs do the same, working as primary care providers without any prior experience required, but no one complains about PAs.

I know this may sound foolish, but if you don't have any hands-on experience and sound like you don't ever want any, why did you become a nurse?

I'm wondering the same thing myself.....

I'm not crazy about PAs personally. As co-workers they are fine. For myself and my family, we go to docs with NPs in their practice.

OP, you will be a new grad with no experience and nothing to offer an employer but potential. The degree you will have shouldn't even be offered it's just a workaround for people with non-nursing bachelors degrees to get student loans.

It certainly will make me question anyone with an MSN claiming to have an "advanced" degree. They don't have a clue about the basics.

Universities are businesses, they will be happy to give you whatever advanced degree you want .... if you pay them. So then we end up with a bunch of over-educated clueless APNs .... Yayyy! Sadly a lot of hospitals look only at the alphabet soup behind a person's name for administration positions.

Cheers

The use of a blanket statement that summarily dismisses the educational prowess of APRN's speaks more to invalidate your position, than to give merit to it.

All the hospitals that I'm around in a heavily populated area require 3 to 5 YEARS of Management experience before those over-educated administrations get to dust off their degree.

The NP positions require at least 3 years of experience.

And so on.

I would like to hear what you have to say about the specific content of the education process, as well as some quantitative outcome data to validate your stance.

I don't know what to tell you about your particular position, OP, but I received my RN license last year and immediately enrolled in an MSN NP program. I'm currently working as a sexual assault nurse examiner, and hope to work in women's health as an NP when I eventually graduate.

Do whatever you need to do to reach your goals. That's what I'm going to do.

I would be equally interested to hear your opinion on MSN programs that issue advanced nursing degrees without a nursing experience requirement. Please include quantitative outcome data on these programs. Also please include job placement success rates.

Really? If you can't be bothered to look that info up, why should the other poster?

I also don't feel compelled to go though journal articles for that info. However, I'm in one of those programs right now. It is an ABSN/MSN program; the students immediately enroll into a MSN NP program the second year.

As BSN graduates, our NCLEX pass rate was 100% for the cohort, and the majority of us chose to work RN jobs after obtaining our licenses while continuing into the MSN program. It's job placement for NPs is successful; many students end up working at their preceptor sites. Our program does actually place us with MD, DO, and NP preceptors (unlike other schools who say they place, but don't). It is a state school, so tuition is about $17,000 for the entire MSN program, which is a good indicator that it is not a degree mill.

roser was rebutting the PP, in the same language she used.

Guess no one's looking up anything tonight.

Hi, I am not following, so I have few questions in an attempt to grasp the situation.

You study leadership in nursing.

You do not want to really work as a nurse. Ever.

Your previous position - was not real actual nursing.

What are you trying to accomplish with that leadership degree of yours?

Is your goal to be a unit manager? director of nursing? Nursing home leadership? Hospital leadership? Admin position? I find it to be highly, highly challenging to attempt to work as a leader with lack of any relation to reality understanding and grasp of what is happening on the floor. If you will do administration, how are you going to suggest the ratios for nurses? How are you going to lead ordering of supplies if you will don't know what is it like to use them? If you are going to bust nurses butt for stupid cups on the tubing, do you have any at least distant idea what they deal with and how long time it takes for them to really actually do real nursing job around patient??? Using useless program, and how long it takes to chart. What is it about to take care of patient who just arrested on you? If anything in leadership but actual nursing work is your goal, then maybe instead of trying to avoid a floor, you should roll up the sleeves and deal with it. I find it impossible (however there are companies who love ppl like you, they though have a problem to retain employees) As your subordinates will one day. (Plus with boss who has no idea what is doing, it is hard to maintain any respect) It will make you way better boss, who understands what is going on, and what is happening in reality. At least few years of different nursing experience, so you can put it all together. Just an suggestion. And prayer. Please god... you know what I pray for.

Is she responding to hawaiicarl or ®Nurse? Roser quoted the latter.

I apologize if it's the former, but when I read her post, and that's what I get from it. Written communication is not always as clear as spoken.
