MSN for FNP? Is DNP required?

Published

Im currently a BSN RN working in NJ. I have about a year and a half experience and am starting to think about going back to school. Long term, I plan on working as an FNP in NJ - ideally in primary care or in some sort of reproductive endocrinology clinic. In looking at different programs, I am unclear what the requirements are for MSN v DNP. In NJ, will I need a DNP to practice, or will a MSN in FNP suffice? What about NY? I have no desire to prolong my schooling if its not necessary. Any advice would be majorly appreciated. Thank you!

In a nutshell, the DNP is not required nationally, think of it as a suggestion. The target year was 2015 and nothing has changed. MSN is currently one entry point. Getting the DNP will not increase you NP salary at this time. Will some employers prefer a DNP? Maybe but I have not seen jobs requiring DNP. If you search here you will find multiple threads about this. But currently MSN/FNP will do.

I think it is like the BSN only. It is talked about but nothing is set in stone yet. A lot of rumors though.

Specializes in Med surge, hospital.

Hello I’m an RN working in NJ as well with 6 years Med surge experience.  My head is spinning from all the different options.  I want to do William Patterson I think because the program is only 20 months but not sure if it’s doable with 2 young kids (ages 10 and 4) plus working 3 12s a week.  I also thought about a slower paced one like Wilmington University but it’ll took forever it feels like.  I’ve also debated PMHNP.  Any insight is appreciated!!
