Moving from TX to MI, still a student, where should I test?

Published

Hello,

Not really sure if this was the right place to post.

I am graduating in December. Immediately after graduation I am moving from Texas to Michigan. Should I apply take my NCLEX here in TX and transfer to MI, or should I just register to take it in MI? There is a lot of information on the websites and I'm having a hard time determining which would take less time.

Thank you,

Sara

You can *test* wherever you want. You can take a road trip to Utah and take the test there if you want. When you APPLY to test, you have to specify which BON you want the test results to go to. And since you're moving immediately, you should specify that you want the results to go to Michigan. But where you physically take the test is of no importance.

When I graduated with my ADN back in December of 2000 I had a similar situation. I moved from NJ to NV the next month. I waited and took the NCLEX in NV since that was where I was planning on living and working, not NJ. Otherwise I would have had a license I wasn't going to use in NJ and would still have had to go through all the hoops of getting one in NV. Personally, I would think that unless you're planning on going back to TX sometime in the near future to work it makes better sense to just settle in and take it in Michigan. Good luck.

Again, where you physically take the test has no bearing on what state you want to be licensed in.

Thank you. I clarified in my initial post that I intend to apply for the NCLEX in the state that I 'take' my test.

Thank you, about how long did it take for you to meet the requirements to take the test in another state? I am already qualified to apply and take the test in TX, but I have to get fingerprints and background through MI....

Why? If you're planning on moving to Michigan right away (thus, I assume you won't be seeking employment in Texas), why would you want to apply for licensure in Texas?

Just to make sure you understand what I was trying to say - if you're moving to Michigan, apply for Michigan licensure. But where you take the test doesn't matter a bit. Take it wherever you plan to be at the time the test is scheduled.

I have no idea, but I would think that since you know those are the requirements, you can begin the process now, so that when you receive your ATT after you graduate in December, you will be ready to schedule your test right away.

I don't really remember, it has been 15 years, but I don't think it was anything different than it would have been if I had stayed in NJ and tested there. I have a vague memory of having filled out paperwork toward the end of nursing school (maybe) stating where I planned on licensing?? Once I got to NV I don't really remember what I did, probably called the BON? Sorry, I really don't remember but it did go fine without any problems as far as I can remember.

When I started my program in Texas I did finger printing, back ground check, etc. through the Texas BON. I am clear apply to take my exam through TX BON right now, but then I would have to transfer my license by endorsement. I am not sure how long the endorsement process takes.

To apply for licence by exam in MI I would still have to send my fingerprints background check, plus I would have to send a hard copy of my transcripts directly to the MI BON, before I could even apply for licence by exam through MI. (So I couldn't apply until after I graduated) But I wouldn't have to transfer my license by endorsement.

I was hoping to find someone who had been in a similar situation, and would be able to tell me which route may take less time.

klone has given you excellent advice. The fastest and cheapest route will be to apply directly for licensure in MI, if you are absolutely certain that you will be leaving TX upon graduation.

You are going to pay Pearson Vue regardless of where you apply for licensure. If you apply to TX, you are going to pay whatever the fee is for licensure in TX. Then, when you apply for licensure in MI, you are going to pay the licensure fee their as well. In addition, it is likely that there will be an additional fee when TX provides verification of your license to MI.

…I am already qualified to apply and take the test in TX…

While you might be qualified to apply” you won't be allowed to test until after your school sends the affidavit of successfully passing to the TX BON. Having

And you're going to have to do this when you apply for licensure by endorsement as well. Have you reviewed the information in the Registered Nurse Endorsement Application Packet?

Take it in Texas to pick up the Compact license and the 25 or so states that identify the compact.

michigan nursing is not a joke so please be prepared to know what you know. The nurses there work and get educated not like in Texas where they be Lvn 20 years. Best wishes
