A coworker made me so mad!
You can lead a horse to the ER but you can't make them let you start an IV. I think that sometimes we need a pseudo ER for the fakers and the crybabies

Quitting without a notice
Questions don't answer the feel of the unit the work place politics. What makes the job you have suck? Have fun and so what's best for you.

Quitting without a notice
What makes you think that the grass is greener elsewhere? Life happens everywhere so what happens when you are short staffed at your new place? Are you going to jump ship again? I've learned that as a nurse you can only do what you can do. I don't think anybody license is at risk, do you really know what gets you in trouble or are you being dramatic? Please give the folks a notice don't run out on them with all these mergers you would be surprised who might be ya next owner. Plus it's what professionals do, kids run out.

At the expense of the nurse... One person who can't topple a kingdom. Do you work hard for what you have to lose it to conjecture? thats when the disagreements would start then.. I'm not talking about systems I'm talking about a man who blew his brains out because he felt his life was ruined because we have people who have never worked a floor and are making rules. It's so easy now to skip the floor on nursing and appear at the top just because you have the credentials mean you deserve them. You are talking about a zillion dollar monster I'm talking about each and every nurse who coulda got reported but because they like her or something she doesn't or the nurse they don't like and she does. This is about getting people to respect discipline not be afraid of it. Patient ratios? Yeah tell them to stop coming, tell pharm companies to stop handing out mess they call medication and ruining my tv show with commercials tell 86 year olds to stop wanting new hips. im just concerned about what happens to Nancy Nurse not BigWig medical center and together it can be done. Not for credit or prestigious kudos just so I can age knowing that my my future nurse is not running scared from Nurse police

General Disdain Toward Job
It's pecking order. Many nurses don't like their jobs and don't have an effective outlet for expressing that. We deal with unreasonable expectations from jchco, bosses, other nurses, clients and families.(she's 96 and you want to do what?) plus everyone is not the same so intelligence varies, understanding vary, not to mention we are human and constantly asked to do superhuman things. Older nurses myself included dislike the bright eyed ignorance that some new nurses display they come unable to bend around concepts they don't know and some of them refuse to think at all and have the nerve to want to come to ICU. I really hate the way they make nursing seem glossy and star like when really we are just playing the hands dealt to us. plus all this technology is not making us faster it's taking fromthe pure essence of what nursing is: encouraging the client to reach their optimal level. It's hard to do that when a client has 15 meds eating chips and diabetic refusing education saying "I've been a diabetic for 16 years ain't nothing you can tell me."(!) plus humble servitude is not taught anymore in nursing school so some of the new ones don't want to do what they think is beneath them. I have witnessed nurses leave a room to go find a tech to change a brief... Really? Or they spend a year nursing and go off and become NP since they started giving them out in cereal boxes so we have a desk full of new inexperienced NPs who really don't do anything. jchco is not helping and besides they work for the money not nurses. Go research the connection between JCHCO and Purdue Pharma (makers of Oxycontin) then you will know why pain is the fifth vital sign, and it's not because it should be either. until we go back to nurses socializing nurses then i don't know where it's going.

It's nurses helping nurses. A RN here about three years ago killed himself over discipline because he didn't know it wasn't the end of the world. When you bring up discipline nurses cringe or sneer at another nurse who may have had problems. I would like to see the stigma taken out of discipline in the nurses community and the boards all agree to what is able to be disciplined. Real things not "potential for harm" we don't live in the future. I live in Texas one of the most punitive states where our discipline is outta this world, every little thing, poor investigations and high penalty. The board also has the right to overturn judicial decisions made by higher courts. I would like to be able to help employers gain workers, nurses accept discipline gladly. Hold the hospitals more accountable for their systems and each individual nurse understanding what she need to keep herself, her staff and client safe.Like drivers license if you get a speeding ticket you don't kill yaself or even embarrassed. You get nursing discipline there is a shame factor to it. No one ever got in trouble without help, be it the flawed systems, jchco or mean vindictive coworkers. I know a nurse who sued a facility won 30k and they reported her license after they paid her sent the board 400 pages of chart, the investigator(a former police officer) was insisting punishment and refused to acknowledge the lawsuit or even call it retaliation. Now she cannot really find a job because no one wants to deal with the board. So in a nutshell that's it.

Drug seekers
I used to be like you until I had a surgery and huuuurrrrrtttt like crazy. I used to think these folks were addicts and crazy and all that. I was immature and wrong. It's not for you to judge a patient which it seems like you are doing just do what the order says or call the doc as to why you shouldn't. I once had a trach patient that wanted to be suctioned till he bled seemed like... The nurses hated when his light came on because he didn't need it and he would get angry.. He dies because he needed suctioning.(!) and some nurse was being judge mental. I'm telling you this to say get out of your feelings if you know you have a clock watcher beat him to it sometimes all the power a patient has is asking for something. As a nurse the job can be good if you don't attach how YOU feel, it's not about you. I would suggest you read Leadership and Self Deception by Arbinger Institute. It's used as a training guide in some tele health jobs, it teaches you how to not fall into that trap in the first place by taking control of the interactions in a great way. if your hospital has a pain service talk to them about how you can help patients like this.

Bad Nurse or Nursing Politics? SO CONFUSED!!!
Critical thinking in a nutshell: pouring piss out of a boot with directions on the heel. what they are saying is that this is not clinical the decisions you make impact lives and they need you to get passed the gloss and work. Get you a drip book and understand what you need to. Quit looking for criticism from management they have enough to do without you wondering if you great enough. Don't get the rep of being a whiner and if someone says don't ask, don't bust your gut asking.(that critical thinking they were talking about) knowing when to hold em and when to fold em. Go get the knowledge you need and only you know what that is. Call your old school and ask one of you clinical teachers what was your weaknesses. Youll be fine. Get stronger and only you can do it!! Best Wishes

I need ALL the advice I can get.
Do the experience first. You have already set up too many obstacles to success talking bout the kids and black curtains and all that. Also at the end of the day you are taking care of life not shopping for a dress. It's about you that's why you need some floor experience. Pediatric parents slay nurses like you because your what you want shows. In your post all you mentioned was cosmetic reasons to be in Peds those parents have a hard enough time without a nurse just thrill seeking. go get your lumps then when you ready in mind body and spirit go to Peds. Of course the manager will hire you and be the first to fire you when you mess up. Go get strong first. Best Wishes

How many med errors are acceptable for a new grad RN at a teaching hospital?
Uh last time I checked none! If a nurse does not know what she is doing she needs to be brought to the table and told so a plan of correction need to be in place to keep not only the patients but coworkers safe.

Moving from TX to MI, still a student, where should I test?
Take it in Texas to pick up the Compact license and the 25 or so states that identify the compact. michigan nursing is not a joke so please be prepared to know what you know. The nurses there work and get educated not like in Texas where they be Lvn 20 years. Best wishes
