moving to Texas, which city is better? Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio?

Published

My family is moving down to Texas, however we haven't decided which city we are moving to. We are looking at Houson, Dallas, and San Antonio. Any input is appreciated. We dropped Austin as the living cost might be way too high. or any of these cities is better for nursing careers?

Would like to hear your suggestions. Thanks.

Don't be so quick to rule out San Antonio. Nice, safe city with plenty of activities not to mention affordable housing. Fortune magazine just rated San Antonio as its number one housing market. I'll be there next month.

It's about houston, dallas, and austin, but it still hits some of the same points

Are there any close ,safe cities in the DFW area that are also close to Med centers like Pearland is?

There is Irving, Las Colinas, Lewisville, McKinney, Mesquite, Plano, Richardson, these are some suburbs surrounding Dallas Medical Center. (low crime, affordable houses, Good school districts) Some cities for ex. Irving, u can ride the train to dallas and the parking is free.

can anyone give me some guidance on what to expect in salary for a may '06 grad? thanks.

Well the Southwest side is in the top five of the fastest growing areas in the country (Fort Bend County). It has the highest # of golf course to population ratio in the country (if you play golf)...it always green. You can buy a 5,000 sq.ft home for a couple hundred thousand or rent a really nice apartment for only several hundred as opposed to several thousand per month like ive seen in some other major cities. All of the major nice suburbs are about 15-20 mins from Houston via the freeway. Traffic can suck but where doesnt it? It is very diverse and accomodating to any religion or cultural beliefs...The Houston Medical Center is world renowned and jobs are always available. The school districts are great in the suburbs but not too sure about HISD (Houston Ind. School Dist). The beach is an hour away. Try cities like Sugarland, Richmond, Rosenberg, Bellaire, Pearland, Fulshear....they all are great places to live.

Try taking a look into El Paso cost of living is great here, new houses run as low as 60-70k lvn pay from what I can tell here on the forums is pretty good depending on where your working. Personally I havent worked anywhere for less then $19hr full time and as much as $29 prn at a couple hospitals through the agency

If your still looking for a house in you price range, you should check out this website....

I just visited San Antonio this past week and I loved the place, is very cheap, you can find a house within that price range in the northwest and southwest, very close to medical center. Plus is a beatiful area.

The only downside is that the salaries are low due to the abundance of nursing schools in the city.

thanks all. The traffic in Houston is really a nightmare with all the construction going on. There is ALWAYS traffic.... We found a nice house in Pearland where it is booming. I think I would rather working in Pearland if I have a chance. The traffic in Houston is totally intolearable.

Many areas of Fort Worth, Arlington and surrounding cities are pretty nice with very low housing costs. I've been in the market for a house in those areas and will certainly be able to find a nice modest 3/2 house for under $100k. I'm looking at southwest fort worth, crowley, and south arlington which are all in fairly close commuting distance to downtown fort worth which has many hospitals. I would check sites like realtor.com to get an idea about what kind of house you can get for the money in certain areas. Coldwell banker's site actually has neighborhood profiles that tell you the average home sale price and salaries, etc. etc.

the rent in austin has decreased since i left 4 years ago . . . i think it's pretty affordable and such a great place to live . . .
