Mount St. Mary's College LA - Accelerated BSN 2010

U.S.A. California

Published

This is a new thread for anyone that has applied to the Mount St. Mary's College Accelerated BSN program in Los Angeles for 2010 entry.

This is my second application for admission since I wasn't offered admission for Fall 2009. Did anyone hear anything back yet for Spring 2010? Is there an interview process? I have read conflicting information on this topic. I also applied to Samuel Merritt in the Bay Area (also turned down twice to 2 programs for Fall 2009 entry). They wont be sending out admission offers until February for March start dates!! Would love to hear from fellow nursing school hopefuls :o)

Good luck to all you!!

Betsy

Hi Betsyct!

Thanks so much for the response. This is my first time applying to the program.

I have gotten straight A's in my prepreqs so far since I've started school again (I got my BA over 15 years ago). My GPA from college was not that great. I've also received C's in 2 of the non-science classes that qualify for the prereqs. I noticed that on their application this time, that they only allow for their applicants be have been able to have received C's in 1 class, but I'm not sure if that's just for the science classes.

In any case, I have a good amount of experience in the medical field and since getting my Bachelor's, I've been a straight A student so I'm hoping they weigh the whole package, which I know that nursing schools do more often than not.

Is this your first or second time applying?

Thanks again!:nurse:

Hi TaoGirl:

This is my second time applying. Last time, I still had some Science classes in progress so I wasn't surprised I didn't get an interview. But I wanted to apply b/c I thought it would help when I applied the second time around.

This time I have all my classes completed. And I have A's in my classes too. It seems they place most emphasis on the Science course. I'm sure the other classes are important too but if you have a C in one of them, it's prob not that big of a deal.

hi ladies,

hope everyone isn't stressing too much about the interview. who else has had an interview invite other than betsyct? it makes me weary about me having my interview so early since no one else has had their interview...

i hope everyone posts whether or not they get an interview invite or if they got in. a month away before we get the deciding letter! ahhhh!

TaoGirl, you sound like me. I had a terrible GPA from my previous BA, but have a 3.91 since going back to school. Only received a B in Anatomy (arrrghh) but got an A in all other classes.

I'm taking Ethics (not Bioethics...who gives that class?) over the Winter session, and just finished my World Religion class a couple of weeks ago. How is everyone else who got an interview email doing?

My last name is "A" and did not receive it yet, but it's a long day and I'm keeping positive thoughts. I thought they interview everyone that turns in a complete application, however. This is my first time applying.

Hi Guys!

More information regarding the interview schedule. I've heard that they will go on break from 12/23-1/4 so hopefully we'll hear today or tomorrow. We could also hear right when they return from break.

Here is some info. about the Medical Ethics course which can be taken either before admission to the program or once you get in. Sorry for the long post here but there's some useful info.

From an Allnurses post:

I just started with the May cohort. I took the Taylor online bioethics class and completed it in less than a month so it's definitely doable even if you're slacking a bit. There are 5 papers, 4 are 6-8 pages and the last one is 25-30 pages. It may seem like a lot of work but the instructor is a very lenient grader. It will also save you a lot of money since MSMC will charge close to $1000 per unit (3 unit course second semester).

From MSMC Website (a power point I dug up from an info. Session they had)

There are upper division Phil. courses that are transferable for our Bioethics requirement.

*UCLA Phil 155 Medical Ethics

*LMU Phil 330 Cont. Moral Problems

*Taylor Univ.(Indiana) Phil 410E (online)

More examples of courses that meet Bioethics requirement

California State University:

Fullerton- Phil 314 Medical Ethics

Long Beach- Phil 403 Medical Ethics

Los Angeles- Phil 429 Bioethics

Cal State Poly Pomona-Phil 433 Bioethics

Loyola Marymount University-

San Diego State University-

Hey guys! Just wanted to check in as I'm sure you're all anxious about interviews, etc. Don't worry if you haven't gotten a call yet. I got mine right before the semester started and right now they're pretty bogged down. In terms of 1st degree GPA, mine was not great, around a 3.2 but it was many years ago. Not sure how much they count this. The person who posted the bioethics info is on the right track. Just to let you know, about 2/3rds of my class (including me) has to take this in the upcoming "junior year" (or 2nd semester). This is supposed to be the most challenging of the 3 and we're all dreading it. One of my fellow students took the online Taylor Univ in a few weeks and it's also a lot cheaper than MSMC's course. You should have plenty of time if they let you know by the end of January (which will probably turn into the end of February). Also remember some people who get accepted are going to decide against the program and that will free up space. Good luck everyone!

I've been searching all the options listed since it was posted and can't find anyone that is still offering this class! I found a class called Ethical Theory at CSUN and sent a request with the description to MSMC to review. Otherwise, I'm taking a lower division Ethics class at a community college over Winter Session and will then be forced to take it at MSMC for the more expensive price. This is all on the chance I get in or even get an interview.

I received an email today at 6:45pm for an invite to interview January 7th through January 15, 2010. Did anyone else hear anything? I am excited and very nervous.

Hi,

I also received an email invitation last Friday- and was wondering if you guys have heard anything more since last Friday. I thought we were to schedule an interview appointment via e-mail so I sent my choice of date and time.........but haven't heard anything back yet. Did anyone get a confirmation reply yet??

I also emailed to set up a time but haven't heard back yet either.

just a reminder to post with the site's terms of service in mind, particularly:

while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.

while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.

please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

thank you!

Since posting a few hours ago, I heard back from admissions to set up date and time. Haven't confirmed yet, but I did receive an email.

Thanks, betsyct, for updating us on the whole process.
