Motivation needed to get through Excelsior RN program

Hi. My name is Dianne and I have been an LPN for 2 years. I started to take my pre-req's for Excelsior's ASN RN program Jan '11. I have completed the Sociology exam and I am about to take the Life Span and Development exam. These have not been terribly difficult classes but have taken me forever to complete due to motivation issues. I want to continue this track because I have to work (as a home care nurse) while I go to school. The thought of going to a community college to go through an RN program gives me the willies just thinking about it. LPN school was intense, I can only imagine what the RN program would be like.

So, I am wondering if anyone out there is currently taking classes through Excelsior and would be interested in a study buddy (virtual) or local ( I live in Mass). My next class is Transition from LPN to RN.

Hi, I have a question regarding Penn Foster (I know tis is an old post-lol)

did you have to enroll and pay all the enrollment fees to take the Eng 103 exam? And did this exam satisfy the Excelsiors written english requirement?

Hi Ms Piggy,

The answer to both of your questions is .... NO! The only fee you have to pay to Penn Foster is for the actual course, no enrollment fees. I paid $70, and had it added to my ACE transcript. If you have them send it directly to Excelsior, there is a small additional fee ($10 or $15?)

Eng 103 is Information Literacy... it is NOT Eng 101... which is a separate requirement.

I just applied! Today! I am an LPN in OK. I am excited but will definitely need a support system to get thru this. So if you want to share, vent, study, [email protected]. I have an associates degree from a million years ago that I am hoping some of the courses will transfer. I am a little nervous about doing this in online and staying motivated and disciplined, but....here goes

Just wanted to give you some encouragement...I was an LPN once too and enrolled in Excelsior (then Regents College) in 1995 for my associates. Got the ADN a year later and then returned to Excelsior in 2008 for my BSN. Now I am am FNP! I loved Excelsior because of the flexibility and support I received from them. You can do it too! I am applying for excelsior LPN to RN program this month and I plan to actually start taking classes in August. Has anyone finished the program in 6 months? Im sure this is hard work at this pace but I was just wondering how did you study and what material did you study? Also how often did you test to get thru the 7 nursing classes?

6 months, no way.

You have a minimum of 2 months for the FCCA (if you take both at the same time) and a 2-6 month wait for the CPNE once your done with the FCCA. So your looking at 4-8 months just for that, + 6 weeks after you finish your CPNE to officially graduate.

I had a friend that was able to get through the nursing courses in 5 months, a month for the FCCA (the old written one) and 3 months for the CPNE. She was taking an exam every 3 weeks.

I plan on doing an exam every 2-3 weeks - I hope to keep my GPA up that way, I did my prereg anp micro human development and humanities before enrolling. I did transition in 2 weeks, and health safety in 2 weeks, but chronicity seems to be a little harder - so it will probably take me about 12-14 months. I've read that you can get the clinical much sooner if you apply for all spots and check ccancellations every week if your willing to go anywhere to test.

Hi everyone!

I just went to the seminar for excelsior, and of course came here to see if others recommend it and such. I'm thinking I will move forward with it. I am currently enrolled in the LPN to BSN at UofP, but boy is it pricey and takes a LONG time. Will be posting more here as I go through the process. Any advice for someone just staring/enrolling would be greatly appreciated.

did you download the free content guide from EC misstLPN? it tells you exactly what you need to cover for the exam. I also paid for an audio program monthly when I took my exams through EC, it's a third party but allows you to cancel and re-subscribe at any time if money gets tight. I was able to take 5 nursing exams in a 6mo period that way. But i'm an audio learner which is why it helped me so much! =)
