  1. I just applied! Today! I am an LPN in OK. I am excited but will definitely need a support system to get thru this. So if you want to share, vent, study, [email protected]. I have an associates degree from a million years ago that I am hoping some of the courses will transfer. I am a little nervous about doing this in online and staying motivated and disciplined, but....here goes
  2. :bowingpur How do I deal with a difficult resident in LTC? This is a Veteran's facility. This person has MS. He is in his early 60's, very smart. I understand his frustration, I empathize with him. He monopolizes every one's time. He stated that he "is more important than the crazy old men" on his unit. He has terrorized more aides and nurses than we can count. Every month someone is quitting or transferring off the unit because he is so vicious. He files formal complaints against anyone for things like dropping his toothbrush on the floor! Everyone is afraid of him. He uses the "I am a disabled VET" blah blah blah all the time. The facility tried to discharge him, but he filed a lawsuit and is now in the midst of fighting to stay here. He is resistant to anyone who tries to reason with him.I would transfer off this unit but I adore the other 40+ residents. I wish I could file a complaint against him for creating a "hostile working environment"!! Ahhhhhhhhhh...glad I have someplace to vent:nurse:
  3. I am an Lpn. Want to get RN/BSN. Due to my husband's job, we relocate around the US alot! I was about to start RN school in Tenn when we were transferred! I got into a 12 month LPN program because I was determined to be a nurse!! I want to continue my education, but until my husband is discharged or retired, well, online seems to be the only option. I have read so many posts about different online programs. Which one would you all recommend? :)
  4. Hair should be pulled back. My mother was hospitalized and had the cutest nurse, with a head of long curly hair, that was either in her face, mom's face or being brushed back by her "sterile" gloved hands! Whne mom suddenly started to wheeze and stated that her file showed she was highly allergic to chemicals found in hair products, the cute little nurse with the long curly hair, knotted it up! Found out that at this metro hospital, it was not required.
  5. I am so gla dthat I stumbled upon this post.I too am a new LVN grad(7mos) and am quiting my LTC job.I am on 11p-7a and have 40 pts.I run from 10:15 till 8 am because I need to change out a foley ( I refused to wake up a 97 yr old at 2 am to change a cath). The day shift arrives and gives us attitude because they think we sit and read gossip papers all nite! It is insane. I find myself driving away everyday feeling stupid, burnt out and that going to nursing school was the biggest mistake I have ever made.It is making me feel so bitter towards the whole field. I will start working at a MR community org soon and hope that I can regain the spirit that I felt when I decided to become a nurse.
  6. I am an "older" new nurse.I have a MAJOR case of insecurity. Been in a new job for 5 days.Yesterday,3 nurses call out and the charge hands me the reins and says GOOD LUCK! I wanted to cry ,scream and run right out the front door.Instead I just smiled and prayed and got to work.I got my butt handed to me! I had 35 patients, all on a day when the families crawling all over me.Never sat down or ate or went to the bathroom. All the while trying not to freak out because my mind would blank out.So when I was unsure ,I grabbed a pharm or procedure manual( the other nurses where too busy to ask for help). At the end of the shift when the charge asked how it went, before I could answer,he "directly" told me I needed to work on my time management! So I stood there and looked him in the eye,and Iwanted to burst into tears, instead I found myself laughing and shook my head and said......Yeah, your right.I work on that, thanks" I wanted him to pat me on the head and tell me how great I was,but I know that standing next to all the nurses I work with, I know so little.School taught me all the text book versions but nothing compares to or prepares you for the actual process. I just wonder how long before I feel like I know what I am doing?
  7. Hi, Glad I found this thread! I just started at a long term care facility 2 days ao and while I already like the job, being assigned 25 to 35 patients is a bit overwhelming! I am concerned about managing my time and thought the notebook idea great.Going to the office supply store today!
  8. I am 48 and have been an LPN for 2 months. The only drawback is that everybody looks at me and thinks I have years of experience because of my age.I love the look I get when I tell them how "fresh" I am!! But what's up with the knees going at 40? I'm too young to be this old!!
  9. I am on my 8th "training" day at Da Vita.I am a new LPN and the LPN I was replacing just up and quit. The preceptor tech sat me in an office for 2 days with manuals and then "trained " me on the machine. I was then informed that I have to give all patient meds and all assessments before patients get on.I am pulled in a million directions all the while the Techs are snickering and acting like I should know what I am doing because I am a "nurse".This friday I was told that come Monday I will be on my own.So I am now freaking out because #1I don't know what I am doing, and #2 I do not want to jeapordize my license and # I don't know what I am doing!!! I tried to explain it to the RN charge nurse but all I keep getting is attitude. The administrator nurse is never in the building.I was told when I was hired that I would be properly trained for this job! Ha! And the "employer of choice" motto is a joke to me now.I really wanted to work for them but if this is the way the clinics are run,I worry about the patients. And don't get me started on the whole Epogen topic!!! Thanks for having a place for me to get info, visit friends and occasionally RANT!!!
  10. I am a new LPN and love the ads for "Entry Level" but needs at least one year experience! How can you get experience if no one hires you! I am lucky that Davita did hire me and hope to be able to hone enough skills to retuen to school, get my RN and get into nephrology. My school fed me a bunch of you know what and blew lots of smoke up my *&^# and assured me that with the "nursing shortage" I would be snapped right into a job!No hospital will touch me and all LTC centers are all prn. But I can always go back to waiting tables!LOL Pays the same!!:)
  11. Hi I have first hand experience with every MCI issue that you all have had!I was all set to attend school at TSU in Nashville when we were transferred to Newport News. I enrolled at MCI simply because I did not have to wait!It was not what I expected.I did not recieve info until the first class day. They gave us scrubs and books for the first class. We had close to 30 people when our "year" started, and out of that group,5 of us made it to graduate! The administration seemed unorganized, but they are all very approachable and helpful. They really want to make it a better environment in which to learn. They do however have some clinical instructors that should not be clinical instructors! The thing with MCI is to just go with your head focused on you.The drama at the school is unbelievable! Our class had so many drama queens and cry baby types that it was unbearable at times. It seems like a lot of people who love to complain end up there, but in the end they are usually the ones that fall to the wayside. They really try to make sure that you get the class subject and all of the instructors that I had were helpful and pleasant. They really made sure that I was ready to pass my boards and I did! First time.....85 questions! The clinicals were just like they were described but if you go into the clinical site and do get one patient, go to the Nurse mananger and offer to do any treatments, etc, tell them you want to watch, assist etc.and trust me they will pull YOU out of your group to teach you.It all come down to getting out what you put in.
  12. ok I Just graduated one month ago.............I managed to pass the Nclex....now I have the interview.......getting ready to be tossed into the deep end of the pool.I can't swim....during my first clinical rotation most of the nurses I encountered were pretty miserable. I thought about quitting because I thought that nurses were supposed to LOVE their job. when I figured out that they were always short staffed and under equipped, well who wouldn't be grumpy, that and a bunch of starry eyed students underfoot!I learned to just observe and jump in with an extra pair of hand if needed.I went on to diffferent sites and had different experiences. Some great, some just ok.I do realize that even though I managed to retain the info long enough to become licensed........I am so not feeling ready for this, yet I feel as if I am supposed to go in their and know what I am doing!AAAAAhhhhh.....so...what is a newbie to do? Don't want to come off like a complete idiot, but don't want to be an arrogant whiner! Any advise?? please!!!
