Most RN's first borns?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everybody,

I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.

So, how many first borns are out there?

Yep....sign me on....I too am a first born .

Neither parent an alcoholic. However, my stepfather was.

I am a male.

Well, I don't know where I figure in this equation but I am the first born of my mothers children and the 5th born of my fathers (the 4th daughter of 5). Neither mom nor dad ETOH but my maternal grandfather was as are many on my maternal side. And mental illness runs in paternal side. Was always the caregiver when old enough after my dad passed when I was 3.

I am the first HS graduate in the family, the first to attend college. (nursing student)

I'm a firstborn, but dh - also an RN - is fifth out of five (one of twins).

My father drinks ETOH (although he's not an alcoholic), my mother rarely does; dh is the son of teetotalers.

#1 crack junkie father....

I'm an only child but neither of my parents are/were alcoholics. They are crazy though. :)

First born and ETOH father here.........I fit the profile then! LOL

First born, but no ETOH, no other drugs.

My mom became a nurse after having kids, she's the youngest in her family, also no ETOH.

Specializes in ICU, School Nurse, Med/Surg, Psych.

I agree with your social worker, nurses have characteristics that are common- I am the baby of three and my father is an alcoholic.

The statistics that I am aware of bear out the opposite. First Borns are rarely RN's as nursing is a subservient role. First borns are usally Doctors, Lawyers and enter fields that are generally more respected than nursing.

The exceptions, would be if you are the first -from a family that is lower than middle class on the socio-economic scales. For example- the first one in a family to have any education beyond high school., or the first born from an abusive family.

I was the second and last-born, and I'd be shocked the day I see my father with any kind of alcohol in his hand! So this statement is very much wrong in my case!!!
